Everyone can read the news, and yet everyone will read it differently. As bilingual third-culture kids living in Taiwan, our aim is to explore a few international news articles every week. With contrasting personalities and perspectives, you’ll be sure to hear your fair share of quarreling, but it’s through differences of opinion that we come to understand each subject even more throughly. As they say, if you’re fighting, at least you’re trying. (Not sure if they say that, but I guess we do now.)

Before their weekly news battle, Esther and Lara chat about which languages require context and which are more straightforward. With Christmas around the corner, what crazy decorations are starting to surface? One small town unintentionally takes a phallic direction. Nearly 20,000 drug-testing cases in Boston are affected by a state chemist’s misconduct and the repercussions are still being felt seven years later. The Vatican’s spokespeople turn to Instagram for answers after the pope’s account is revealed to have liked a racy photo of a Brazilian model. This week’s Meiwa News Battle is a must-listen for carnivores! These days we eat much more meat than previous generations, but what do we know about its quality or origin? Being able to critically evaluate online information is a must for this generation. It means putting aside personal preferences and feelings, using evidence and facts to determine the reality of a situation. In this episode, Esther teaches us how to embrace our “critical” sides, evaluating each news piece with heightened awareness. Bonus: Lara also breaks into song a little more than necessary.
