EP261 MLC: The Ultimate Membership Summit: Find Your Perfect Starting Point

I’m so excited to share that today’s episode is all about kicking off our next big event—the Memberships What's Working Now Summit! Honestly, one of the biggest struggles I hear about with virtual summits is just that overwhelming feeling of not knowing where to start once you get inside. You sign up with the best intentions, but then face this huge list of sessions, and it’s so easy to just never get around to it. I completely get it. I’ve been there myself! So this time, we wanted to do things differently. We sorted all 38 sessions for the week into three really clear buckets, and it is so much more straightforward this way. If you’re stuck getting new members in the door, you go right to “Filling the Room”—sessions focused on funnels, collaborations, and offers to reach new people. If people are joining but then quietly disappearing, head straight for “Why Would They Stay?” which is packed with onboarding, support, and engagement strategies that help keep your members past that crucial first month. And for those of you that feel like your backend tech and systems are just barely held together, “Running It Smart” is where you’ll find the behind-the-scenes sessions that help your membership run smoother as it grows. You can go right to the spot that matches where you’re stuck instead of scrolling endlessly hoping something jumps out at you. The summit is all online, totally free, and you get access to every session for the whole week—no daily time limits, no worrying about missing out because of your schedule. It’s super flexible: you can watch what you want, whenever you can fit it in. And let’s be honest, sometimes it’s hard to actually jump in, even when you’re all signed up—that’s not a character flaw, it’s often just about the structure. That’s why we’ve made it simple and really doable this time. Plus, there’s a private Facebook group where we’ll be hosting watch parties, games, fun prizes, and lots of engagement. The speakers will be hanging out all week long too, so you can pop in and ask your questions. There are even prizes for showing up and being engaged, so it’s definitely worth diving in! And if you want a bit more support, there’s an optional Action Advantage Pass that gives you extra guidance and resources throughout the week and the following week. This summit is our third Memberships What's Working Now event—and our fourth summit in the past two years—and every round, we make it even better. If you haven’t registered yet, do it now! Just go to whatsworkingnowsummit.com—it takes 30 seconds and then you’ll get details on how to join the Facebook group. This episode is intentionally short because my one big ask is that you come join us for this once-a-year summit. I can’t wait to welcome you—I’d love to see you inside and hear what you think of everything we’ve put together! EP260 MLC: Stop Losing Members: The First 30 Days Fix for Membership Success

Most people track retention the wrong way—and in this episode, I get real about why that’s a huge mistake if you run a membership. Let me take you behind the scenes of a series of conversations and lightbulb moments I’ve had lately, all sparked by one shocking stat: most of our members decide to stay or go within the first 30 days. Not month six, not when the novelty wears off, but right at the very beginning. It’s something I see again and again with my clients and fellow membership builders. You’re pouring all your effort into “saving” members in month four or six, but the reality is, you’re aiming at the wrong window. If your onboarding isn’t spot-on, you’re missing your biggest chance at keeping people. The inspiration for this episode came as we prepped for our upcoming summit. Scott Paley (from Numbers Are Sexy) is leading a session called “Your retention rate is lying to you.” The core idea just floored me: the retention numbers most of us obsess over don’t actually help us prevent cancellations. They only tell us what’s already happened, never who’s about to hit the cancel button. We’ve all been tracking what’s easy to see, but not what tells the real story. Then I heard what Erin Kelly of MemberVault is sharing in her talk, “The First 30 Days Fix: How to Set Up Your Membership So People Don’t Cancel.” The whole mindset shift here is wild—if you want people to stay, it’s about what they experience their very first week, not gizmos and bonuses months down the road. Your onboarding has to deliver those quick wins and make people feel at home, fast. And then there’s the idea that some people simply never wanted your main membership offer at all. Jessica A, one of my clients, runs Double the Stitches (a knitting membership) and realized a smaller, lighter offer wasn’t just a “downsell”—it attracted a totally different type of buyer who wanted something more focused. Those folks never would have bought the “full” version no matter the price. If you only offer one way in, you’re leaving an entire category of people out in the cold. The big takeaway I want you to have from this episode is this: it’s not about frantically tracking more data, launching more bonuses, or adding extra tiers just to add them. It’s about deeply understanding the systems at play—what actually predicts a member will cancel, when that decision gets made, and who you’re missing entirely. I’m so fired up for the upcoming What’s Working Now Summit because we’re not just handing you more tactics. We’re getting under the hood and teaching you to spot those critical signals before a member is gone for good. It’s free, runs October 5th to the 9th, and includes 38 sessions you can access all week—plus live presentations, Q&As, and, honestly, one of the most energetic, supportive community experiences we’ve ever pulled together. If you want to see retention differently, attract the right members, and keep them without burning out, you need to carve out space for this summit. Grab your ticket at whatsworkingnowsummit.com and come be part of the movement—I’d love to see your membership thrive alongside ours. EP259 MLC: Why Your Membership Playbook Isn’t Working (And What To Do About It)

Lately, I’ve been hearing a lot of frustration from membership site owners who feel like they’re working harder than ever, but just aren’t seeing the results they used to. I know how exhausting it feels when you’re publishing weekly content, launching like clockwork, showing up for your people, and yet—fewer members are staying, your launches aren’t picking up steam, and your churn stubbornly sits in the same place. You might be wondering if you’re just dropping the ball somewhere, but I’m here to tell you: you haven’t gotten lazy, and you haven’t lost your touch. The truth is, the way people find, join, and interact with memberships has changed, and nobody sent us all a memo when the ground shifted beneath our feet. Today, I want to walk through the three biggest signs that it’s not you—it’s the playbook that needs an update. I know I saw myself in these, and I bet you will too. First, there’s the content trap. You’re publishing consistently, maybe even more than you used to, but retention isn’t budging. We once believed that more content equals more value equals lower churn—turns out that’s only half true. Content keeps people interested, but it doesn’t guarantee they’ll keep paying. The second sign is launch fatigue. You’re pouring six weeks into every launch, grinding through the classic sequence, but it’s always the same handful of new folks who come in. The market has seen this same launch plan everywhere—what used to feel fresh just isn’t moving the needle anymore. And then there’s the churn mystery. You keep adding more and more—live calls, bonuses, more trainings—but your numbers aren’t improving. Often, the problem isn’t a lack of stuff; it’s that members aren’t getting what they need in those crucial first 30 days. The leak is happening way earlier than where we’re usually looking. If you’ve been doubling down on what worked pre-2020 and feeling stuck, I’m right there with you. The solution isn’t to just do more of the same, but to try something different: revamping onboarding, shifting to more targeted offers, and building stronger support systems—not just making more noise or packing on endless new features. I’m excited to say I’ll be diving deeper into this at the Memberships What’s Working Now Summit, coming up October 5th. We’ll spend five days learning from 38 different people who are in the trenches, making things work in this new landscape. If you want to skip the fatigue, avoid burnout, and get excited about your membership again, go to whatsworkingnowsummit.com and grab your free ticket. I’d love to see you there—you deserve to fall back in love with your membership, and to see your hard work pay off again.
