Another Elijah
Sermon Summary: Pastor Dale Tunnell’s sermon focuses on Zechariah and the promised birth of John the Baptist in Luke 1. While serving in the sanctuary, Zechariah is startled by an angel who tells him that a prayer he and Elizabeth had prayed many years earlier has been heard: they will have a son named John. Zechariah struggles to believe this because both he and Elizabeth are old, even though, as a priest, he knows the biblical stories of God accomplishing seemingly impossible things. The sermon uses his reaction to challenge us to consider whether we sometimes place our own limitations on God, saying in effect, “God, that’s not possible,” simply because His way does not fit our expectations. John’s birth was about much more than answering an elderly couple’s prayer. He was called to go before the Lord “in the spirit and power of Elijah,” preparing people for the coming Messiah by calling them to repentance and pointing them toward God’s mercy, forgiveness, light, and salvation. The sermon draws a parallel between the spiritual darkness of Zechariah’s time and our own. Just as God raised up John with a special message for his generation, God has given His people today a mission: to pray, serve their communities as Jesus did, share what Jesus is doing in their lives, study His life and teachings, and help others follow Him. The sermon concludes with a personal challenge: Are we prepared to tell others about Jesus when God gives us the opportunity? The pastor recounts the story of a missionary who encountered a man who said he had seen him in a dream and knew that the missionary had something to tell him about Jesus. God is already working in people’s lives and preparing hearts; our responsibility is to be ready to join Him in that work. Like John the Baptist, we are called to help prepare people for the Lord—and, as the sermon concludes, “these are the days of Elijah.” --- Welcome to Mesa Palms Seventh-day Adventist Church! After the Fire
Sermon Summary: Pastor Dale Tunnell’s sermon follows Elijah immediately after his extraordinary victory on Mount Carmel. Although Elijah had just witnessed God answer by fire and had experienced a tremendous spiritual high, Jezebel’s threat caused him to become afraid and flee for his life. Exhausted, discouraged, and overwhelmed, Elijah eventually sat beneath a broom tree and asked God to take his life. His experience reminds us that even faithful people can experience fear, poor judgment, disappointment, and deep discouragement. Elijah was a great prophet, but as James says, he was also a man with a nature like ours. Rather than condemning Elijah in his weakness, God responded with patience and compassion. He allowed Elijah to rest, provided him with food, and led him on a forty-day journey to Mount Horeb, giving him time to recover and commune with God. There, Elijah encountered a powerful wind, an earthquake, and a fire—but God spoke to him through a “still small voice.” The sermon emphasizes that when we are discouraged, God does not abandon us. He cares for our physical, emotional, and spiritual needs and patiently reminds us that He is still present, even when circumstances make Him difficult to see. Finally, God reminded Elijah that his mission was not finished and that he was not alone—there were still seven thousand in Israel who had remained faithful. Elijah responded by getting up and returning to the work God had given him. The sermon challenges us to do the same: when disappointment, fear, or discouragement causes us to lose perspective, we can listen again for God’s voice, trust His care, and remember that He still has a purpose for us. The mission is not finished; there is still more to do. --- Welcome to Mesa Palms Seventh-day Adventist Church! No Rein, No Reign, No Rain
Sermon Summary: Pastor Dale Tunnell’s sermon centers on the dramatic confrontation between Elijah and King Ahab in 1 Kings 18. After three and a half years of drought and famine, Ahab accuses Elijah of being the “troubler of Israel.” Elijah refuses to accept the accusation and boldly tells the king that the real problem is Ahab and his family, because they have forsaken God’s commandments and followed Baal. Elijah’s courage becomes an important theme of the sermon: he stands before Ahab “unashamed and unterrified,” more concerned with defending the character and truth of God than with whether people like him. The sermon challenges Christians today to have that same courage—to recognize sin, call it by its right name, and remain faithful to God even when doing so is unpopular. The confrontation eventually moves to Mount Carmel, where Elijah asks Israel the defining question: “How long will you falter between two opinions?” The people must decide whether the Lord or Baal is truly God. The prophets of Baal unsuccessfully plead with their god to send fire, while Elijah repairs the Lord’s altar, drenches the sacrifice with water, and simply prays. God responds by sending fire that consumes the sacrifice, the wood, the stones, the dust, and even the water. The people fall down and proclaim, “The Lord, He is God!” Yet the sermon emphasizes that the greatest miracle is not necessarily fire falling from heaven, but a genuinely changed human heart. Miraculous signs alone are not enough; people must move beyond merely acknowledging God with their lips and give Him their hearts. The story of Elijah ultimately becomes a personal challenge for believers living today. Pastor Tunnell argues that Christians face the same fundamental choice Israel faced on Mount Carmel: Whose side are you on? There can be no divided allegiance between God and the world. Elijah demonstrates that the source of spiritual courage is not personal strength but dependence upon God, especially through prayer. Even those who feel unable to preach, teach, sing, or give a Bible study can pray for their families, coworkers, churches, and communities—and God can use those prayers to produce conviction and action. The sermon closes with an appeal to stop wavering between two sides, rededicate ourselves completely to God, and make the decision now to follow Him 100 percent. --- Welcome to Mesa Palms Seventh-day Adventist Church!
