Equipped: Prophecy
This morning, we’re continuing our ministry training series called “Equipped.” All ministry and all of the gifts of the Spirit should ultimately have the end goal of pouring out God’s love toward people and pointing them to Jesus and His salvation (1 Corinthians 13). 1 Peter 4:10 Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms. All of the gifts of the Spirit are manifestations of God’s grace given by the Holy Spirit as He wills. Although Holy Spirit chooses which gifts to give us, He’ll only give them to us if we want them. Remember, all ministry is a cooperation between us and God. 1 Corinthians 12:31; 1 Corinthians 14:1 Eagerly desire the gifts of the Spirit. Once we have the desire for them, how do we receive them? Well, like everything else with God, we ask for them! Jesus said: Matthew 7:7-11 (NLT) 7 “Keep on asking, and you will receive what you ask for. Keep on seeking, and you will find. Keep on knocking, and the door will be opened to you. 8 For everyone who asks, receives. Everyone who seeks, finds. And to everyone who knocks, the door will be opened. 9 “You parents – if your children ask for a loaf of bread, do you give them a stone instead? 10 Or if they ask for a fish, do you give them a snake? Of course not! 11 So if you sinful people know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give good gifts to those who ask him. God will give us good gifts if we desire them and ask for them! Last week, we learned about the spiritual gifts of words of knowledge and words of wisdom. This morning, we turn to a gift of the Spirit that we love here; prophecy! Why? Because the Bible tells us to! 1 Corinthians 14:1 Follow the way of love and eagerly desire gifts of the Spirit, especially prophecy. Whereas all other spiritual gifts are purposed to be used to serve the needs of anyone at all, prophecy is a special gift given to the church for the church. 1 Corinthians 14:22 Tongues, then, are a sign, not for believers but for unbelievers; prophecy, however, is not for unbelievers but for believers. In fact, prophecy can even lead to us receiving the other gifts of the Spirit! 1 Timothy 4:14 Do not neglect your gift, which was given you through prophecy when the body of elders laid their hands on you. By the way, here is another reference to spiritual gifts being imparted by the laying on of hands. Prophecy is a gift through which God reveals to us our future potential. A prophetic word gives us hope, it gives us direction, it gives us a place to stand and battle from! A prophetic word helps us to prepare for the future and position ourselves for it. Paul instructed Timothy to do all of this. 1 Timothy 1:18-20 18 Timothy, my son, I am giving you this command in keeping with the prophecies once made about you, so that by recalling them you may fight the battle well, 19 holding on to faith and a good conscience, which some have rejected and so have suffered shipwreck with regard to the faith. 20 Among them are Hymenaeus and Alexander, whom I have handed over to Satan to be taught not to blaspheme. Personally, I struggled with the need to fight for prophecies because we so often quote and stand on this scripture. Isaiah 55:10-11 10 As the rain and the snow come down from heaven, and do not return to it without watering the earth and making it bud and flourish, so that it yields seed for the sower and bread for the eater, 11 so is my word that goes out from my mouth: It will not return to me empty, but will accomplish what I desire and achieve the purpose for which I sent it. If God’s word accomplishes what He desires and always achieves its purpose and never returns void or empty, then how could an accurate prophetic word sent by God not come to pass? Why can’t we just k

God will give us good gifts if we desire them and ask for them! We start this morning with the words gifts; words of knowledge, words of wisdom, and prophecy. A word or message of knowledge is when Holy Spirit reveals something to us that we did not learn by natural means. In my opinion, this is a great gift for all of us to seek because I believe that it is a gift that all of us receive and operate in as Christians. It’s an easy one to test and grow and mature in as well. This is also an easy one for us to miss when it comes to hearing God’s voice. When we receive a word of knowledge, we just know something, but with no other explanation for knowing it other than the fact that God revealed it to us. Here’s a powerful example of this gift in action. 2 Kings 6:8-23 8 Now the king of Aram was at war with Israel. After conferring with his officers, he said, “I will set up my camp in such and such a place.” 9 The man of God sent word to the king of Israel: “Beware of passing that place, because the Arameans are going down there.” 10 So the king of Israel checked on the place indicated by the man of God. Time and again Elisha warned the king, so that he was on his guard in such places. 11 This enraged the king of Aram. He summoned his officers and demanded of them, “Tell me! Which of us is on the side of the king of Israel?” 12 “None of us, my lord the king,” said one of his officers, “but Elisha, the prophet who is in Israel, tells the king of Israel the very words you speak in your bedroom.” You have the read the rest of this historical account because it gets way better! There wasn’t a spy or a mole or a leak in the king of Aram’s service. Well, not a person at least! God chose to give a word of knowledge to Elisha about the king’s plans. How can you possibly win when you try to secretly plan and scheme against God and His people? There are lots of other examples of this as well such as how Jesus knew about the husbands of the Samaritan woman at the well or how Peter knew that Ananias and Sapphira lied about how much they sold their property for or how he knew that there were three men looking for him from Cornelius’ house. How do we receive a word of knowledge? Ask for it and believe that He will reveal the knowledge to you that you need, then actively seek and listen/look for it. The next gift is a word or message of wisdom. What wisdom does is takes knowledge and then applies or takes action

Equipped: Gifts
This morning, we’re continuing our ministry training series called “Equipped.” So far, we’ve covered that ministry is just a word meaning ‘serve’ which we are all to do. Ministry to people should just be a continuation of our ministry to God. Jesus didn’t serve every single need that He encountered. Rather, He said that He did only what He saw His Heavenly Father doing. True, Biblical ministry can only be done through relationship with and in cooperation with God. We began learning about how there isn’t a specific formula or method to successful ministry. By God’s own design, it is supposed to be an adventurous scavenger hunt. It’s a pursuit of seeking and finding; of secret things being revealed as Heaven invades Earth! All ministry and all of the gifts of the Spirit should ultimately have the end goal of pouring out God’s love toward people and pointing them to Jesus and His salvation (1 Corinthians 13). Let’s start into the gifts of the Spirit! 1 Corinthians 12:1-11;27-31 1 Now about the gifts of the Spirit, brothers and sisters, I do not want you to be uninformed. 2 You know that when you were pagans, somehow or other you were influenced and led astray to mute idols. 3 Therefore I want you to know that no one who is speaking by the Spirit of God says, “Jesus be cursed,” and no one can say, “Jesus is Lord,” except by the Holy Spirit. 4 There are different kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit distributes them. 5 There are different kinds of service, but the same Lord. 6 There are different kinds of working, but in all of them and in everyone it is the same God at work. 7 Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good. 8 To one there is given through the Spirit a message of wisdom, to another a message of knowledge by means of the same Spirit, 9 to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by that one Spirit, 10 to another miraculous powers, to another prophecy, to another distinguishing between spirits, to another speaking in different kinds of tongues, and to still another the interpretation of tongues. 11 All these are the work of one and the same Spirit, and he distributes them to each one, just as he determines. 27 Now you are the body of Christ, and each one of you is a part of it. 28 And God has placed in the church first of all apostles, second prophets, third teachers, then miracles, then gifts of healing, of helping, of guidance, and of different kinds of tongues. 29 Are all apostles? Are all prophets? Are all teachers? Do all work miracles? 30 Do all have gifts of healing? Do all speak in tongues? Do all interpret? 31 Now eagerly desire the greater gifts. Different gifts, but the same goal. Different gifts, but working together and needing each other. Different gifts, but intended to cooperate in unity. Different gifts, but the same gift giver! Typically when we receive a gift on a special occasion like a birthday or Christmas, the gift is something for us personally and intended just to bless us. Maybe it’s a gadget for us to use and enjoy for a hobby or a tool to make chores we do easier or a special item that holds a personal memory like a picture. When it comes to spiritual gifts, although we receive them, they are not for ourselves. All of the spiritual gifts that we could receive are for us to be able to serve the needs of others. 1 Peter 4:10-11 10 Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms. 11 If anyone speaks, they should do so as one who speaks the very words of God. If anyone serves, they should do so with the strength God provides, so that in all things God may be praised through Jesus Christ. To him be the glory and the power for ever and ever. Amen. Spiritual gifts are just physically manifested forms of God’s grace given to us. Spiritual gifts are supernaturally manifested and distributed into ou
