About Metamodernism Uncensored

Metamodernism Uncensored is a podcast exploring the ideas, tensions, and cultural forces shaping life beyond postmodernism. Through candid conversations on politics, culture, philosophy, faith, and meaning, the show seeks to cut through the haze of cynicism, tribalism, and ideological paralysis that defines much of contemporary America. Rather than choosing sides in the culture war, Metamodernism Uncensored pursues a dialectical synthesis. Can we hold competing truths in tension, seek deeper understanding, and explore what a more integrated, constructive future might look like?

Inside In Search of Lake Weslemkoon: Why Trifling Things Save the Soul

In this episode of Metamodernism Uncensored, Sean Dempsey explores nearly the full arc of his short-story collection, In Search of Lake Weslemkoon, and the movement from the Postmodern Man toward something more hopeful: the Metamodern Man. Lake Weslemkoon emerges as both a real place of family memory and a symbol of stillness, permanence, and divine mystery. The discussion traces Dempsey’s debt to Dostoevsky, especially Notes from Underground, and the deliberate structural reversal in “Notes from Beneath the Postmodern Rubble.” Where Dostoevsky begins with philosophy and ends with story, Dempsey begins with story, allowing the reader to feel the human problem before naming it. From the small human memories that undo the machinery of “The Obsolete Mr. Sterling,” to the chaotic grace of “Ataraxia & Anxiety on Lake Weslemkoon,” to the moral reckoning at the heart of “Anslem,” this episode considers why trifling things may save the soul. A child’s lost Lego, a wife’s yellow-or-cream dress, a mended stuffed cow, a broken rope, and a family’s refusal to answer suffering with more suffering all become small but stubborn lights against nihilism. This is an episode about second innocence: seeing the world clearly in all its tragedy, absurdity, and cynicism... and choosing kindness, sincerity, love, and hope anyway.

Oft Evil Will Shall Evil Mar

What if the greatest enemies of endless war are the very men most determined to wage it? In this episode of Metamodernism Uncensored, we unpack Tolkien’s haunting observation “Oft evil will shall evil mar,” and follow it from Gollum’s destruction of the Ring to Trashcan Man’s nuclear annihilation of Randall Flagg’s kingdom in The Stand. Again and again, evil does not need to be conquered by something purer than itself. Sometimes it merely needs enough rope, enough power, and one final act of hubris. Then comes Iran... Trump, Netanyahu, Ted Cruz, Lindsey Graham, and the architects of American interventionism wanted this war to demonstrate strength. But what if the Iran war becomes their Gollum instead? What if the catastrophe they unleashed finally does what decades of antiwar arguments could not: convince Americans that the machinery of permanent intervention is itself the enemy? The Ring made Gollum. Flagg gathered Trashcan Man. And the war hawks may have created the very disaster that finally unmakes them. Sometimes evil is defeated by good. Sometimes evil simply reaches too far.

A Kinder, Gentler Liberal Christ Who Never Meant Most of What He Said

In this raw and explosive episode of Metamodernism Uncensored, Sean Dempsey takes a satirical scalpel to the postmodern, progressive attempt to remake Jesus into a harmless mascot of unconditional reassurance. The “kinder, gentler liberal Christ” loves endlessly, judges nothing, demands no repentance, requires no belief, and, most conveniently, never meant any of the difficult things He repeatedly said. But truth is far less generous. The biblical Christ (you know, the One from the gospels who called himself the Way, the Truth, and the Light) is not merely a dispenser of comfort. He is Savior and Judge, Lamb and King, mercy and justice made flesh. Drawing from Scripture, Christian philosophy, and the logic of the Cross itself, this episode argues that forgiveness without justice is moral indifference, love without truth is indulgence, and salvation without repentance is a contradiction. For Christ did not come merely to affirm mankind, but to redeem it; and redemption requires that men and women actually receive Him, trust Him, and confess Him as Lord. If Christianity can survive only by editing out judgment, sin, repentance, and the exclusive claims of Christ, then what remains may be fashionable, inclusive, and very soothing... but it is no longer Christianity.
