Episode 12: Why Are We Eating a Snack for Breakfast?
Overnight oats are everywhere, and most people file them under "healthy breakfast". Rich did too, and had told clients as much. Hiro's answer in this episode is blunt: it's a snack, not a meal - and closer to a pudding than anything else. Rich puts the questions and Hiro takes apart both versions of the bowl: the sweet one, and the protein-powder one the fitness world swears by. In this episode: What actually makes something a meal: protein, vegetables, healthy carbs and fats - and why oats soaked in milk with honey or maple syrup misses most of that The numbers: about 40 g of oats in 200 ml of milk is roughly 12 g of protein, then fruit and syrup pile on the carbs. Hiro's name for it: oat pudding Where the "low GI, steady energy" story came from - including a 2018 study funded by PepsiCo, which owns Quaker, and the fact that oats look good mostly when compared with white bread and white rice A plain-English explainer on GI and blood sugar, and why the response is very individual The protein-powder version: flavoured powders, non-sugar sweeteners, and the WHO's 2023 advice against using them for weight control Additives and emulsifiers in flavoured powders, and Hiro's concern about gut bacteria and short-chain fatty acids The missing ingredient nobody counts at breakfast: vegetables - and how eating the same breakfast daily wastes a chance at fibre and five-a-day How Hiro grew up eating breakfast in Japan: a small bowl of rice, miso soup with greens, a few vegetables, tofu, grilled fish or eggs - and why last night's leftovers are a normal breakfast there What to eat instead: whole-food protein (eggs, fish, tofu, meat), something colourful, healthy fat from oily fish or olive oil - and soup as the easiest way in if you can't face vegetables in the morning Whether oats can stay: yes, alongside protein and vegetables, rather than as the whole meal If you use protein powder: Hiro's advice is unflavoured. A full episode on protein powder is coming. The question to ask: not "is this food healthy?" but "is this meal complete?" Answer that and you know what to add. Episode 11: Understanding the Afternoon Energy Dip and How to Combat It
Most people know the 3pm crash. It's easy to blame lunch - but the afternoon dip is actually built into your body clock. We have two sleepy windows in every 24 hours: a big one in the middle of the night and a smaller one in the middle of the afternoon. You can't delete it. You can decide how deep it goes. In this short episode, Rich puts the questions to Hiro: why the dip happens, what makes it worse, and the practical changes that keep your energy steady through the afternoon. In this episode: Why the afternoon dip is a scheduled event driven by your internal body clock - not just the food you ate The three things that make it deeper: a poor night's sleep, a big lunch built on refined carbs (sandwiches, baguettes, pizza, pasta, meal deals), and caffeine timing Why caffeine doesn't give you energy - it puts a lid on tiredness, and when it wears off the dip lands harder Breakfast matters too: carb-heavy with no protein sets you up for a bigger crash Always tired, not just in the afternoon? Low iron, folate, B12 or vitamin D can be behind it - get a blood test The fixes: prioritise 7-9 hours of sleep, build lunch around quality protein and complex carbs (root vegetables, potato, sweet potato, fruit), and take a short walk after eating Know your caffeine cut-off - clearance varies from person to person, anywhere from about 90 minutes to nine hours Do your most demanding work in the morning and save routine, lower-effort tasks for the afternoon Where to start if that feels like a lot: sleep. Poor sleep pushes you towards carb-heavy food and more caffeine, which wrecks the next night's sleep - a vicious circle. Fix sleep first and the other two get easier. For more, go back to Episode 4: Sleep Is the Master Pillar. Work with your body, not against it. If you're always exhausted or have an underlying health condition, speak to your GP. We're coaches, not doctors. If you found this useful, share it with someone who needs to hear it. Over 40 and want help with your health, wellbeing or performance? Episode 10: The Strength You Keep - Strength, Power and Recovery After 40
When most people hear the word strength, they think about what they can lift in the gym. For Rich - now in his 60s, with over 40 years of training behind him - it means something different: being able to do the things you enjoy for the next 10, 20 or 30 years without your body holding you back. In this short solo episode, Rich keeps it simple: three things every midlife person should be thinking about if they want to stay strong, capable and independent. In this episode: Why strength becomes more important as you get older, not less - and the quiet early signs you're losing it: the shopping feels heavier, getting up off the floor takes more effort Building strength: two to three sessions a week, built on compound movements - push, pull, squat, hinge and twist Strength vs power: strength is being able to move something, power is moving it quickly - and why that is what catches you when you trip How to train power without reckless training: med ball throws, low-level jumps, skipping and fast step-ups Recovery - the biggest change Rich has made to his own training: sleep, nutrition, mobility, and not smashing himself every session Why constantly tired, constantly sore and constantly carrying niggles is a sign to do less, not more The line to remember: training is the stimulus - recovery is where the adaptation happens. None of this is complicated, and you don't need a fancy system. You need to be consistent, progressive and intelligent. The question Rich leaves you with: what do you want your body to be capable of in 10, 20 or 30 years' time? If you're coming back to training after a long break, or you're managing a health condition, check in with your GP first. We're coaches, not doctors. If you found this useful, share it with someone who needs to hear it. Over 40 and want help putting it into practice? DM the word METHOD on Instagram @richlevy_performance.

Episode 9: Training With an Injury Over 40 - Why Working Around It Isn't Enough
You've got a shoulder, hip or back that's been off for months. It doesn't stop you training, so you've quietly built your sessions around it. Most people over 40 are doing exactly this, and most of them think it's the sensible option. In Episode 9, Rich and Hiro are joined by Dr Melanie Wintle - a chiropractor, kinesiologist and corrective exercise specialist with over 30 years in fitness, strength and rehabilitation. Melanie moved her own practice away from hands-on treatment towards exercise rehab, after watching too many patients feel better for three days and come back the next week with the same problem. Her argument isn't that you should stop training. It's that working around an injury and never addressing it is only half a plan - and the half that gets left out is the one that stops a niggle becoming permanent. In this episode: Soreness or injury? Normal DOMS is roughly equal on both sides, arrives 24 to 48 hours later and eases as you move. An injury is localised over a joint - and that difference is the whole call What changes at three months: the tissue damage has gone but the nerves are still firing, so you guard, then you compensate, then the joint above or below starts taking load it was never meant to Why that chain - not the training itself - is what leads to arthritis Why painkillers before a session are a bad idea, and why after one is fine Parallel tracks: a frozen shoulder can still row and curl, and a disc problem can still squat with a neutral spine. Rehab and strength training run at the same time, not one after the other Broken wrist in a cast? Train the other side. The cross-over effect limits wasting on the injured limb The golfer whose back pain wasn't a back problem - it was two years of an unchecked swing Steroid injections: why there's a hard ceiling on how many you can have, and what they do to tendon tissue Hiro on stress and sleep - why chronic stress lowers your pain threshold, and why sleep is when the healing actually happens Medication as a tool rather than a solution - and knowing which one you're using it as The line to remember: rehab isn't a waiting room you sit in before you're allowed to train again. In Melanie's words, you don't have to work around it - you work it into it. And on the aches people write off as their age: it isn't normal ageing. You can't stop getting older, but frailty is a separate thing, and it's the one you can do something about. Find Melanie at movewellhealth.ca or on Instagram @movewell_mw. If you're training around something that's been there for months, get it looked at properly by a professional rather than guessing. We're coaches, not doctors. Episode 8: Movement and Exercise - Train Smarter, Not Just Harder
Leaving the gym exhausted, sore and barely able to walk the next day is treated as proof of a good session. After 30 years of coaching, Rich doesn't buy it. In Episode 8, Rich and Hiro take on the fifth pillar - movement and exercise - and why the way you train has to change in midlife. Training well isn't training as hard as possible. It's training appropriately: for your goals, and for what you can actually recover from. The bigger argument underneath it is about two words nobody separates. Most people chase fitness - the transformation, the aesthetics - and neglect health. Rich's view is that health is the foundation and fitness bolts on top of it. Hiro's is that you work from the inside out and let the outside follow. In this episode: Hiro's six reasons exercise matters more after 40: muscle and bone loss, weight and blood sugar, cardiovascular function, brain, joint mobility and hormonal shifts Health vs fitness - why people sit in one camp or the other, and why you need both Exercise vs movement: the difference, and why NEAT - what you do in the other 23 hours - is the foundation most people skip An honest look at the average desk-bound day, and the hourly timer that does more than another gym session would Strength, cardio and mobility: getting the balance right, and why people do what they enjoy and quietly avoid what they need Hiro on HDL - the cholesterol nobody talks about raising, and what exercise has to do with it Why more gyms, more apps and more information hasn't made the nation healthier Old Man Mike, who started training in his eighties with a broomstick and two milk bottles Where to actually start if you're beginning from nothing The line to remember: exercise becomes more important as you get older, not less. Most people do less and blame their age - but that decline is exactly why the training matters now. If you're starting out, Rich recommends getting properly assessed by a trainer rather than randomly doing a bunch of stuff. And if you're on medication or being treated for a health condition, talk to your GP first. We're coaches, not doctors. Want help working out which pillar to fix first? Episode 7: Nutrition: The Pillar That Fuels Everything Else
Almost nobody needs more information about food. So why is nutrition the pillar people find hardest? In Episode 7, Rich and Hiro take on the fourth pillar - nutrition - and the mistake sitting underneath nearly all of it: people in their forties and fifties are still eating, and still dieting, the way they did at 25. After 30 years of coaching, Rich's view is that the question itself has changed. It is no longer "how do I lose weight?" It is "how do I keep muscle?" You can absolutely lose weight in your fifties eating very little - and a good chunk of what you lose will be the muscle keeping you strong, keeping your metabolism working and keeping you independent later on. In this episode: The six things going wrong with food in midlife - and why none of them are ignorance Under-eating all day, over-eating at night: why that is hunger, not weak willpower What actually changes after 40 - muscle loss, recovery, and a margin for error that has gone Why protein is the one change Rich would pick above all others, and why breakfast is where nearly everyone falls down Protein and perimenopause - does the message land differently for women? Keto, fasting, low carb: they all work, and what that tells you about the actual mechanism Hiro on supplements - 15 years as a pharmacy technician, and an honest view on what is worth your money Three things you can start tomorrow without overhauling your diet The line to remember: in midlife, protein is not about building a bigger body. It is about not losing the one you have got. If you are on medication or being treated for a health condition, talk to your GP before making big changes to how you eat. We are coaches, not doctors. Next week - Episode 8: Movement, and why the three hours you spend in the gym matter far less than what you do with the other hundred and sixty-five.

Episode 6: You Don't Have a Discipline Problem - Building Habits That Actually Stick After 40
You know what you should be doing. You've started before. So why does it keep falling apart after three weeks? In Episode 6, Rich and Hiro take on the third pillar - lifestyle habits and behaviours - and challenge the story most people tell themselves in midlife: "I just don't have the discipline." After 30 years of coaching, Rich's view is blunt: most people have plenty of discipline. They turn up to work, they look after their families, they meet their responsibilities every single day. What they don't have is a system - and they're relying on motivation to carry them instead. In this episode: The everyday habits quietly sabotaging progress - sleep, weekends, alcohol, and the meals you skip Why missing Monday doesn't matter, but "I'll start again next Monday" does Why you can be disciplined at work and still fall apart with your health The trap of changing everything at once - and why it never lasts past three weeks How sleep, stress, routine and your environment decide your behaviour before willpower gets a look in Three things you can start doing tomorrow that don't require you to overhaul your life The line to remember: one bad meal doesn't make you unhealthy and one missed workout doesn't make you unfit. The problem is when one bad decision turns into a bad week, and then a bad month. You probably don't have a discipline problem. You have a system problem. Episode 5: Why You Can't Train Your Way Out of a Stressed Life - Stress and Cortisol After 40
There's stress you choose - training, cold, hard work - and stress that chooses you. Deadlines, money, ageing parents. The trouble in midlife is stacking the first kind on top of a bucket that's already full of the second, and calling it discipline. Rich leads this one, starting with the conversation he has on the gym floor almost every week: ask someone why they're really here, and the most common answer is stress. So what is the role of exercise in managing stress - and what happens when you pick the wrong kind? The uncomfortable bit for a strength coach to say out loud is that your body doesn't keep separate buckets for gym stress and life stress. It's one bucket. In this episode: Nine physical signs you're more stressed than you think - most people have normalised all of them What cortisol actually does, and why the shape of the curve matters more than the number Why "adrenal fatigue" isn't a real diagnosis - and what's actually going on instead Training as a stressor: which sessions lower your load and which quietly add to it Stress and testosterone in men over 40 - why to fix the inputs before you test Perimenopause, progesterone and why the same stress suddenly hits harder What actually works, ranked - including a 90-second breathing reset we do on air What to do when the stressor genuinely can't be removed Keywords: stress over 40, cortisol and midlife, tired but wired, waking at 3am, adrenal fatigue, perimenopause anxiety, stress and testosterone, overtraining, fitness over 40. Mentioned: Episode 3 (the five pillars) and Episode 4 (sleep) - start there if you haven't heard them. --- Training hard, still exhausted, and wondering why nothing's shifting? Episode 4: Sleep Is the Master Pillar - Why You Can't Out-Train a Bad Night After 40
Sleep over 40 isn't a wellness nice-to-have - it's a training variable. And most people can't even tell you whether they slept well last night. Rich leads this one, with Hiro - whose specialist pillar this is - on what's actually happening in the body, what's wrecking it in midlife, and what to do about it. In this episode: How to know if you've actually had a good night's sleep: six signs, no gadget - Why we're sleeping worse: stress, alcohol, screens and late caffeine - Sleep as a training variable: recovery, hormones, injury risk and appetite - Poor sleep in midlife women: perimenopause, 3am waking, and what gets dismissed - Morning light, bedroom setup, and the wake time that matters more than bedtime - What to do when you're wide awake at 3am - When snoring and constant tiredness mean it's time to see your GP Keywords: sleep over 40, midlife sleep, perimenopause sleep problems, waking at 3am, sleep and testosterone, recovery in midlife, sleep apnoea, fitness over 40. Training hard and still exhausted? The Midlife Method is the two of us coaching you on both sides - the strength and training side and the holistic health side, built around your life. Episode 3: Why Training Alone Won't Fix Your Body After 40 - The 5 Pillars of Midlife Health
The 5 pillars of midlife health — and why training alone won't fix your body after 40. If you're over 40 and training hard but still feel tired, stuck, or older than you should, the problem usually isn't the training. Rich and Hiro break down the five pillars that decide whether your training actually works: diet, movement, sleep, your body clock (circadian rhythm), and stress. In this episode: • Why you can't out-train poor nutrition — and the one protein habit that fixes it • Movement beyond the gym: why 45 minutes can't cancel 15 hours of sitting • Sleep as the "repair shift" — why a consistent window beats total hours • The body clock most people have never heard of — and the free morning-daylight fix • How chronic stress quietly undoes the other four pillars Keywords: midlife fitness, health over 40, fitness after 40, sleep and recovery in midlife, stress and cortisol, circadian rhythm, nutrition over 40, longevity. Realised two or three of your pillars are leaking? That's exactly what we built The Midlife Method for — Rich and Hiro coaching you on both the training and the five-pillars holistic side, built around your life. DM "METHOD" on Instagram @richlevy_performance and we'll help you find which pillar to fix first. Follow the show so you don't miss the next episode.

Episode 2: The 5 Biggest Fitness Mistakes in Midlife
You're training harder than ever and eating well — so why isn't your body responding? In this episode, Richard and Hiro unpack the five mistakes quietly sabotaging health and fitness in your 40s and 50s, and give you a practical fix for each. Decades of real-world coaching between them — advice built on what actually works, not theory. The five mistakes (and how to fix them): No structure — Random workouts, no plan, no measurable goals. Fix: set clear SMART goals and build your training around them. Fail to plan, plan to fail. Training like you're 25 — Ego lifting and too much intensity brings aches, plateaus and injury. Fix: train smart, not hard — balance intensity with real recovery. The all-or-nothing mindset — On it Monday to Friday, off it all weekend ("weekend jet lag"). The start-stop pendulum kills long-term progress. Fix: aim for good enough, most of the time. Consistency over perfection. Nutrition confusion — You can't out-train a bad diet, and most people don't eat enough of the right food. Fix: three quality home-cooked meals a day, built around good protein and fibre. Underrating sleep — The most underrated pillar of all — and it's free. Fix: treat sleep like part of your training. Good sleep hygiene, same bedtime and wake time every day. The two that do the most damage: training too hard (#2) and not respecting sleep (#5). If you only fix one thing this week, both hosts agree — start with sleep.
