[…] To understand what happened next, you have to go back before the Knight Riders, way back, before Real Foot Lake existed. Portions of this country had been granted to private individuals. Then the earthquakes of 1811 and 1812 changed the landscape. Land that had once been dry became submerged. A forest became a lake, and the people who lived around Real Foot gradually came to treat that lake as a public resource. They fished it, they hunted it, they traveled it, and they kind of depended on it. By the late 1800s, people began asking a question that sounds simple, but was anything but simple.
