Duterte ICC Arrest drug war impunity

The arrest of former Philippine President Rodrigo ‘Rody’ Duterte, I covered his time as major and in congress when he was in Davao. He was arrested on a ICC Warrant in Manila at the international airport named for a political leader who was a victim of a violent poltical murder. Arrests of former Presidents have happened before. Often during the terms of their successors. Often when poltical season si near. But, this is different it’s an arrest for violence during a drug war where soem human rights groups say up to 3500 died. This is my opinion and reaction having covered this story for a long time and what I think may be coming. It is about accountability, and hopefully a shift away from the use of extreme violence and an end of what is often termed as impunity of those in power. But we shall see what comes next. The Philippines removed itself from the ICC during Dutertez time in office. New cases can be brought forward. Only from the time the Philippiens was in the ICC treaty.

And what has struck me is what I think is an important perspective, which is our supply chains have not taken into account risk. They have been all about efficiency. And in terms of what we can contribute from trade to building supply chains that are more resilient, I think a key part of this is incorporating into our work on trade beyond tariff liberalization is how we can incentivize countries and more specifically our firms to calculate in the risk of their supply chain design as they make their business decisions.
