Dr. Joseph Petrosino: your gut biome is a garden
It's time for the gut microbiome to become a more central part of our conversation about health. That's why today I’m talking with Dr. Joseph Petrosino about the trillions of bacteria, viruses, and other microbes living in the gut, and why they reach far beyond digestion: into immunity, metabolism, sleep, and even mental health. We talk about how modern diets and antibiotics have reshaped that inner “garden,” when testing is actually useful, and how close we are to more precise ways of keeping people well instead of waiting until they’re sick.We get into what actually helps it, what modern life does to it, and where the science is headed next.Dr. Joseph Petrosino is chair of Molecular Virology and Microbiology at Baylor College of Medicine, director of the Alkek Center for Metagenomics and Microbiome Research (CMMR), and Baylor’s chief scientific innovation officer.Dr. Petrosino was a principal investigator for the NIH Common Fund Human Microbiome Project, and he established the CMMR in 2011 to develop and implement advanced technologies to understand how the microbiome impacts health and disease and translate this knowledge into new therapeutics and diagnostics.

The future of memory with Anthony Metivier
This conversation with memory expert Dr. Anthony Metivier explores practical strategies for remembering names, improving focus, and building a sharper memory, while also examining deeper questions about the internet as humanity's external memory, the "vanishing" of online information, and the balance between preserving the past and letting it fade. From ancient memory techniques and memory palaces to the challenges of digital overload, we discuss why we forget, how memories change each time we recall them, and whether technology is strengthening or weakening our minds.Whether you've ever walked into a room and forgotten why, struggled to remember a name, or wondered how our relationship with memory is changing in the digital age, this episode offers both practical insights and thought-provoking ideas about what it means to remember—and what it means to forget.---Anthony Metivier is an author, educator, and memory expert best known for developing the Magnetic Memory Method, a system designed to help people improve memory, learning, and critical thinking. He has written numerous books on memory techniques, language learning, and personal development, and hosts the Magnetic Memory Method Podcast, where he interviews experts on learning, cognition, and productivity. His work combines traditional mnemonic techniques with insights from psychology, neuroscience, and lifelong learning to help people remember more and learn more effectively.

Sam Sarkisian on the dystopian future of journalism
Sam Sarkisian is a lecturer in the Writing Program at Boston University and author of The Institute, a dystopian thriller about misinformation in the media and political spheres. With the US plagued by disinformation in the media, the answer seems to be a non-partisan Institute for Information Dissemination meant to compile and fact-check the media and political sphere so that citizens will only get the “most accurate” information. Of course, some at the Institute may have their own agenda… The Institute explores the corruption and greed driving many of the biggest institutions, most notably the US Government. Sam has an eclectic background in communications working as a freelance photojournalist, a multimedia editor, grant/policy writer, and in the Press Office of former Massachusetts Governor, Deval Patrick. He’s also the Director of Publishing at LaunchTeam Press. We’ll be talking a bit about his book, the issues we’re currently facing in journalism and, most importantly, how we can move forward. Dr. Andy Howell on future of astronomy
Our guest today is Dr Andrew Howell who leads the supernova group at the Las Cumbres Observatory and is Adjunct Professor in the Department of Physics at the University of California, Santa Barbara. In other words, he’s an astrophysicist. As a postdoctoral researcher at Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, he helped to confirm the acceleration of the universe, for which his mentor, Saul Perlmutter was awarded the 2011 Nobel Prize in Physics. After that he moved to the University of Toronto, where he helped make the best measurements of the Dark Energy driving the acceleration of the universe. Andy is also the Principal Investigator of the Global Supernova Project, a worldwide collaboration to observe 1000 supernovae more intensely than has ever before been achieved. He's also been named to the list of the highest cited researchers in the world for the past two years. He is a co-author on more than 200 scientific papers, and has been instrumental in the discovery of several new classes of supernovae, including explosions brighter and dimmer than previously thought possible. His group co-discovered the first kilonova, a merger of two neutron stars, and helped to determine that they are the source of the heaviest elements in the universe like gold and platinum. This was widely heralded as the biggest scientific discovery of 2017, and Andy was selected by the National Science Foundation as one of a handful of scientists to make the official announcement in Washington, D.C. Andy also appears on and hosts radio and television shows about science for outlets such as National Geographic, The History Channel, and the BBC. Perhaps more surprisingly, he's also an accredited film critic who has written for sites such as Film Threat and Ain't It Cool News. His love of cinema inspired him to co-create the show Science Vs. Cinema, which he hosts. On the show he talks to both scientists and the cast and crew of films about the science portrayed in them.
