Mindful Humble Podcast - Ep 13 - Michele Roldan-Shaw
In a recent episode of the Mindful Humble Podcast, Michele Roldan-Shaw shared her journey with Vipassana meditation with host Trung Nguyen. Michele recounted how she first encountered Vipassana in 2011 during a train ride, where a fellow passenger described the meditation technique, sparking her curiosity. She soon attended her first Vipassana retreat, an experience that profoundly impacted her and led her to continue practicing.
During the conversation, Michele discussed the challenges of Vipassana, such as sitting for extended periods and facing both mental and physical discomfort. Yet, she found the practice empowering, emphasizing the growth that comes from learning to face pain and discomfort equanimously. Michele also shared insights from her experiences at the Annual Old Student Meeting (AOSM), a gathering where Vipassana practitioners engage in discussions, keynote speeches, and group activities—a rare opportunity for community-building within an otherwise silent practice.
For new Vipassana practitioners, Michele advised committing to the entire course, despite any mental resistance that might arise mid-way. For experienced students, she encouraged a consistent practice, even through challenging phases. Her personal mantra of "just keep showing up" reflects her resilience and dedication to Vipassana as a lifelong journey.
