Podcast Overview

In this podcast, I attempt to explore with my guests how movies, TV shows, music, and other elements of pop culture point to our innate human desire for something more, which I believe, is our desire for God Himself. Though it may seem that our culture is increasingly God-less, or “missing God,” I believe that we as individuals and as a human society are positively missing God–that is, desiring God. My hope is that I can explore this theme and ultimately help listeners discover how God makes Himself known through the Truth, Beauty, and Goodness that exists in the world–even the secular world.

That Will Be Me: The Starling with Dora Sison

In this episode of Missing God, joining me is my friend Dora Sison for a conversation about the Netflix original movie, The Starling. Dora is most importantly a wife to her husband Phil and and mother to her son, Gavin. She and Phil teach Zumba together, sing together at the Sunday evening Mass, and are leaders of a Saturday morning small group for high school youth at St. Clement of Rome Church in Metairie, LA. As if all of that doesn't keep her busy enough, Dora works as the creative director for Georges Media, which is a news media outlet comprised of The Advocate, The Times Picayune, and Gambit Weekly. Dora and I discuss The Starling, a Netflix original movie that realistically depicts the conflict and struggles that can surface in marriages when tragedy and suffering occur, but also how new life, resurrection, joy and peace can emerge in the midst of the messiness of life. In our discussion, Dora shares her own unique insights as a wife and mother, and we somehow manage to make connections to the Church, accompaniment, compassion, and relationships, covering a wide variety of topics that reach far outside the structure of just marriage itself. Essentially, I think our conversation points to the truth of how even flawed and imperfect marriages are meant to be an image of the love that God has for us, and ultimately, how God expresses Himself to us in and through our relationships. This movie is pretty complex and has so many layers that we couldn't possibly cover in one episode. I do recommend watching before listening to avoid spoilers, and so that you can come to your own insights and reflections. Thanks for listening and have a blessed day!

Lenox Hill: Choose to Love with Alanna Boudreaux

Joining me in this episode of Missing God is my niece and friend, Alanna Boudreaux, for a conversation about Lenox Hill, a Netflix docuseries that follows the lives of doctors and surgeons at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York City. In our discussion, Alanna and I discuss our own insights from the show, mostly focusing on how well the doctors and surgeons love their patients, and the many challenges and rewards that come with that. Alanna is a Physical Therapy student at FranU in Baton Rouge, and her hard work and determination when it comes to achieving her dreams and goals are a true inspiration to everyone around her. What makes this episode special is that Alanna shares her insights as a PT student and how the doctors and surgeons at Lenox Hill Hospital have enriched her own personal experiences, dreams, and vocation. The Lenox Hill docuseries is a beacon of hope and a great model for how every vocation should be rooted in love. While this show has no religious affiliation, I believe it also gives us a great image of the kind of love, compassion, and healing Pope Francis deems necessary when he says that the Church should be a “field hospital” for the wounded.
Do we talk about Bruno? Yes, we do! Joining me in this episode is Dr. Mario Sacasa, for a conversation on the message of Disney’s Encanto! In our discussion, Mario and I share our thoughts on the themes of family, trauma, healing, identity, vocation and so many other things. What really makes this episode unique is that Mario shares how the movie resonated with him personally, particularly in relation to his Latino roots and his familial and cultural experiences.

Mario is the associate director of the Faith and Marriage Apostolate of the Willwoods Community here in New Orleans and is also a licensed marriage and family therapist, but most importantly a husband, and father of four boys. Mario is also the host of the “Always Hope” podcast, and is constantly having incredibly thought-provoking and inspiring conversations with guests from various backgrounds about finding hope in the world, so after you listen to this one, be sure to check out "Always Hope" via Apple podcasts or Spotify.

After listening to our conversation today, feel free to leave a comment or send me a message with your thoughts or even ideas you have for future episodes.
