Does Andy Burnham's speech truly signal the end of 40 years of neoliberalism?

Today, I analyse Andy Burnham’s historic political conference speech and ask a difficult question: is this the beginning of a genuinely radical new direction for Britain, or does it still operate inside the same neoliberal assumptions that have shaped British politics for decades? I examine the speech’s vision of hope, abundance and a politics of care, including the proposed National Care Service, housing reform, energy policy, proportional representation and the attempt to shift power away from private interests. I also explain why I think the proposal to rejoin the EU is a serious strategic mistake, and why “fiscal discipline” and the endless pursuit of economic growth may prevent this agenda from going as far as it needs to. I do think this was a historically important speech. But historic does not automatically mean sufficient. In this episode, I set out what Andy Burnham gets right, where his agenda falls short, and what a truly transformative politics would need to do differently. The West doesn't support freedom and democracy

The West often presents itself as the global defender of freedom and democracy. But can that claim survive scrutiny when the United States and its allies support repressive regimes, tolerate political repression, and act with impunity abroad? In this video, I challenge the idea that political repression and surveillance are problems unique to China. I argue that, rather than dismissing China’s rise because of its political system, Western countries should be willing to learn from its industrial development, infrastructure, and administrative efficiency—while still critically examining its own abuses.I also discuss why the actions of the United States and its allies deserve much greater scrutiny, and why global institutions may need serious reform.Timestamps00:00 The myth that the West represents freedom00:14 US alliances with repressive regimes00:44 Political repression in Egypt00:52 Why China is presented as a threat01:22 Surveillance and repression are not unique to China01:50 The rise of “China-maxing”02:14 China’s efficiency versus Western bureaucracy02:38 How should we respond to China’s rise?03:01 What the West can learn from China03:23 China’s industrial development and high-speed rail03:50 Why US foreign policy needs more scrutiny04:10 Reforming global institutions04:30 My conclusion on the biggest threat to global security

A Leak at the Heart of British Politics

A leak at the heart of British politics has revealed a three-month “fight-back” plan drawn up by the Starmer government. In this episode of Mission Undercover, I analyse what the document tells us about Labour’s direction, Andy Burnham’s political platform and the deeper conflict between progressive reform and the interests of wealth and the establishment.I look at the plan’s proposals on EU relations, migration, fiscal devolution, public control of water, the £100,000 tax trap, childcare, private equity, capital gains tax, stamp duty, national security and the North Sea oil industry. I also examine the role of lobbying, political donations and corporate influence, including the question of whether money has a stronger voice in British politics than ordinary people. The central question is simple: is this a genuine shift towards a fairer, more decentralised politics, or is it an attempt to establish a “continuity” narrative for the next phase of Labour? I consider who benefits from the leak, why it appeared now and what it reveals about the rot at the heart of our political system. Watch to the end for my argument about what a genuinely progressive politics would need to do next.
