Podcast Overview

Welcome to Modern Mom's Wellness Podcast with Jenna Johnston CNS, MSCN and Renata Filiaci MSHW, CD (DONA). We are here to discuss with you all things motherhood, whether it be fertility, pregnancy, postpartum, or the journey through the process with an abundance of resources, emotional support, guidance, and experts. We are starting this podcast to share simple and practical ways that moms can support their physical and mental health during pregnancy and the years postpartum through the use of nutrition, supplements, herbal medicine, and lifestyle factors like sleep, stress management, movement, etc. so they can feel fully nourished during this transformative time in their lives. By incorporating conventional medicine with alternative medicine, we want to show they can both coexist together, and it doesn't have to be black or white.

We are catering to the moms who are looking for something that's quick and easy to understand and also offers them practical ways to include these suggestions into their lives (i.e., tips and tricks). One of our goals is to empower mothers to take care of their health because that means they can better care for their families and, in the long run, it will improve their children's health too.

Disclaimer: This podcast and social media presence represents the opinions of Jenna Johnston and Renata Filiaci and their guests on the show and social media platforms. Endocrine Disruptors

In this episode, Jenna and Renata discuss Endocrine Disruptors. The endocrine system is made up of hormone-producing glands. Hormones are the chemical messengers of the body. They transport data and instructions from one group of cells to the next. Almost every cell, organ, and function in our body is influenced by the endocrine system.

Hormones are chemicals that coordinate different functions in your body by carrying messages through your blood to your organs, skin, muscles and other tissues. These signals tell your body what to do and when to do it. Hormones are essential for life and your health. Hormones affect nearly every process in your body, including metabolism (the way you break down food and get energy from nutrients), growth and development, emotions and mood, fertility and sexual function, sleep, blood pressure, etc.

Endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) are natural or human-made chemicals that may mimic, block, or interfere with the body’s hormones, which are part of the endocrine system. These chemicals are associated with a wide array of health issues.

Endocrine disruptors are found in many everyday products, including some cosmetics, food and beverage packaging, toys, carpet, and pesticides. Some chemicals that act as flame retardants may also be endocrine disruptors. Contact with these chemicals may occur through air, diet, skin, and water. EDCs cannot be completely avoided or removed; however, you can make informed choices to reduce exposure and risk of any potential health effects.

We discuss how to reduce the exposure as well as organic brands that are affiliated with limiting every day human exposure. There are a lot of alternative options available like glass tupperware, stainless steel pans, cleaning products, etc. Below, we share homemade cleaning sprays and the vitamins we recommend for safely detoxifying the body.

All Purpose Cleaning Spray

1-3/4 cups Hot Water

1-1/2 teaspoons Borax

1/4 cup White Vinegar

Squirt of Dish Soap

Degreaser:

2 cups Water

1/2 teaspoon Washing Soda

1 teaspoon Castile Soap or Dish Soap

8 to 10 drops essential oil (optional for scent)

Vinegar Mix Cleaning Spray

1 cup Water

1 cup White Vinegar

8 to 10 drops essential oil for scent (optional)

Furniture Dusting Spray

1-3/4 cups Water

1/4 cup White Vinegar

2 teaspoons Olive Oil

8 to 10 drops Essential Oil for scent

Glass and Mirror Spray

1 cup Water

1 cup Rubbing Alcohol (70% Isopropyl)

1/2 teaspoon Dish Soap

Early pregnancy exposure to endocrine disrupting chemical mixtures are associated with inflammatory changes in maternal and neonatal circulation

Seeking Health Website

Optimal Liposomal Glutathione

Liver Nutrients

DIM + I3C

B Complex Plus

Curcumin

Guest Episode Featuring Stefanie Boucher

On this episode, Jenna and Renata talk to Stefanie Boucher! Stefanie Boucher is a transformational life coach dedicated to helping women navigate major life changes and design lives that light them up from the inside out. Having experienced many intense and dramatic personal shifts of her own over the years – such as suddenly losing a parent, moving thousands of miles from home for love, becoming a mother, and surviving cancer, just to name a few of them – she learned that while change can feel overwhelming, it also creates space for us to get really clear about who we are, what we want, and then reinvent ourselves in our own image. When she’s not coaching, Stefanie can usually be found in the kitchen doing something with fresh herbs; practicing astrology, human design, or anything “woo”; walking in the woods; or, hanging out with her husband, mom, and teen daughters.Stefanie studied life coaching under the esteemed Martha Beck and the Wayfinder Life Coach Training Program.
