👻 The Poltergeist Curse: Death Behind the Screen

“They’re here.” In 1982, Poltergeist terrified audiences with the story of a seemingly ordinary family whose home becomes the center of increasingly violent paranormal activity. But for some fans, the scariest part of Poltergeist isn't what happened on screen. It's what happened afterward. This week on Grave Confessions, we're diving into the infamous Poltergeist Curse, the legend surrounding a series of tragedies connected to the horror franchise. We start with the original movie, its now-iconic paranormal story, and one particularly disturbing piece of movie trivia: the skeletons used during the infamous swimming-pool scene were reportedly real human skeletons. And according to one of Hollywood's creepiest legends, that decision may have come with consequences. Then we get into the deaths that helped create the idea of a Poltergeist curse. We discuss Dominique Dunne, who played Dana Freeling in the original film and was murdered at just 22 years old only months after the movie was released. We look at Julian Beck, the unforgettable Reverend Henry Kane from Poltergeist II, whose haunting appearance became even more unsettling because Beck was seriously ill with stomach cancer during filming and died before the movie was released. We talk about Will Sampson, who played Taylor in Poltergeist II and died the following year after undergoing a heart-lung transplant. And then there is the heartbreaking death most closely associated with the supposed curse: Heather O'Rourke, the young actress who played Carol Anne Freeling and became the face of the franchise. Heather appeared in all three Poltergeist films before dying unexpectedly in 1988 at only 12 years old, just months before Poltergeist III was released. Four actors connected to the franchise. Multiple deaths. Two of them shockingly young. And a horror movie that had already blurred the line between the dead and the living. So naturally, people began asking: Was Poltergeist cursed? We're separating the documented tragedies from the rumors that grew around them, looking at the stories involving the real skeletons, strange events allegedly connected to the productions, and how the idea of a Hollywood curse became permanently attached to the franchise. Because sometimes the story surrounding a horror movie becomes almost as unsettling as the movie itself. Was there genuinely something strange surrounding Poltergeist? Was the use of real human remains enough to invite something onto the set? Or are we looking at unrelated tragedies that became connected because humans are very, very good at finding patterns when something feels impossible to explain? Grab your headphones, stay away from suspicious television static, and maybe don't build your house over a cemetery. Although apparently the real problem is when you move the headstones but leave the bodies. 👻 Welcome to the Poltergeist Curse. #GraveConfessionsPodcast #Poltergeist #PoltergeistCurse #HorrorMovies #ParanormalPodcast

Episode 6: Dorothea Puente Part 2 – The House of Horrors Revealed

In Part 2 of our Dorothea Puente series, Brooke and the crew dive into the disturbing downfall of the woman who appeared to be nothing more than a sweet little grandmother running a boarding house. After complaints and investigations lead to her first boarding house being shut down, Dorothea’s web of manipulation begins to unravel. We discuss her time behind bars, how she continued to charm those around her, and how prison did little to stop the darkness brewing beneath her grandmotherly image. Once released, Dorothea opens a second boarding house in Sacramento, once again targeting the vulnerable, elderly, disabled, and those with nowhere else to turn. What looked like a safe place to live became the setting for one of California’s most disturbing murder cases. We follow the investigation that finally exposed the truth, the missing residents, the bodies discovered buried in the backyard, and the moment Dorothea Puente’s carefully crafted persona came crashing down. Join Brooke, Adriana, and Savannah as they discuss the shocking final chapter of Dorothea’s crimes, the failures that allowed her to continue for years, and how one unassuming grandmother became one of America’s most notorious female serial killers. ⚠️ Listener Warning: This episode contains discussions of murder, abuse, vulnerable victims, and graphic details that may be disturbing to some listeners.
