Episode 116 Arlee artist celebrates Salish culture in painting of traditional camas harvest
The Salish People have been harvesting the bulbs of the camas plant for thousands of years. You will find the plant growing in Montana grasslands and meadows, it's stunning bluish-purple flowers bursting onto the landscape in mid to late June. The seasonal camas harvest is a revered part of Salish history. As part of it Indigenous People's Exhibition, an artistic image of that cultural history has been unveiled at the Beaverhead County Museum in Dillon. It is a painting by Arlee artist Aspen Decker. She is a member of the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes. NBC Montana attended the unveiling celebration at the museum. Aspen introduced herself in her native Salishan language as Shining Camas Woman. Shining Camas Woman's detailed painting shows the entire process of a Salish camas harvest. Again, speaking in her Native language, she explained the process, starting with the digging of the bulbs, which are a staple Salish food. Aspen said the bulbs would feed families through the winter.
