About Monumental Movement Podcast

“Where sound becomes culture, and culture becomes a living archive of the unheard.” This podcast explores music not as entertainment alone, but as a cultural force, a historical thread, and an ever-shifting field of experimental possibilities. Each episode dives into the worlds of avant-garde composition, underground movements, contemporary sound practices, and the hidden connections that shape the way we listen today. From experimental electronica, post-industrial textures, and ambient minimalism, to folk mutations, noise-based practices, and hybrid global sound cultures, the show examines how artists expand—sometimes even break—the boundaries of what music can be. Rather than simply reviewing releases, we trace the historical context, aesthetic frameworks, and technological shifts that give these works meaning. Whether you are a producer, a sound artist, a researcher, or simply a curious listener, this podcast offers a deep, accessible, and globally-minded journey through the edges of music culture. Expect thoughtful commentary, references to influential scenes and movements, and occasional dives into the philosophy of listening itself. Join us as we build an international archive of sound—one episode at a time.

Progressive Electronic and the Berlin School Sound History

This episode examines the historical development and musical identity of the Berlin School, a significant movement within progressive electronic music that emerged from West Germany in the late 1960s. It traces the genre’s evolution from academic avant-garde experiments to a more personal studio practice led by influential figures like Tangerine Dream and Klaus Schulze. Central to the discussion are the technical innovations that defined the style, specifically the use of analog sequencers to create hypnotic, long-form compositions characterized by repetitive structures and evolving soundscapes. The source also distinguishes the atmospheric, improvisational nature of this school from the more structured, beat-driven approach of Kraftwerk. Ultimately, the overview highlights how these early electronic explorations laid the essential groundwork for modern ambient, drone, and techno music. 【Related Column】Progressive Electronic / Berlin School https://monumental-movement.jp/en/column-progressive-electronic-berlin-school/

Why Everyone Wants a Place to Belong

Human connection in modern society goes far beyond simple digital networking, as individuals continually seek meaningful places of belonging through shared interests like music and niche cultural fandoms. While internet platforms and algorithms have successfully dismantled geographical barriers to unite scattered enthusiasts, they simultaneously create new pressures regarding social conformity and peer approval. Furthermore, the modern cultural landscape has shifted from passive consumption to active community participation, allowing fans to build cooperative networks rather than merely watch from the sidelines. Despite the prevalence of digital spaces, physical environments like concerts and record shops remain vital for generating authentic emotional resonance and collective memory. Ultimately, the fundamental human quest for a sense of community is fulfilled when people discover others who truly understand and validate their personal experiences. 【Related Column】なぜ人は、自分が属していると感じられる場所を必要とするのか https://monumental-movement.jp/column-why-everyone-wants-a-place-to-belong/

Why Angine de Poitrine Makes A Small Stage Feel Like A Large Machine

This episode explores how modern musical acts like Angine de Poitrine expand their sonic depth without simply adding more members to the band. Instead of enlarging the physical footprint of a performance, these artists utilize advanced technology and compact systems to multiply the amount of information a single performer can control on a constrained stage. This approach redefines traditional musical scale, proving that immense acoustic complexity can emerge from a tiny physical space. Accompanying production notes also provide specific guidance for natural Québécois narration, ensuring the proper linguistic delivery of the project's French title. Ultimately, the sources highlight a broader contemporary shift where digital tools allow modest setups to generate massive, intricate auditory experiences.
