What happens when young people discover that their voices really can make a difference?
In Episode 27 of Moore Than Politics, State Senator Michael Moore sits down with Echo Louissaint Collins, founder of 508 C.H.E.E.R.S., a Worcester-based organization dedicated to empowering young people through community service, leadership, advocacy, and civic engagement.
Founded in 2022 in response to rising teen violence, 508 C.H.E.E.R.S. has grown into a program that gives young people a safe, supportive environment while teaching them how to become active participants in their communities.
Echo shares how her experiences as a student-athlete at Clark University helped shape her passion for community service and how that passion eventually led her to create an organization built around one simple belief: young people aren't just the leaders of tomorrow. They can make a difference today.
The conversation explores the organization's Youth Feed Youth initiative, which brings young volunteers together to prepare and distribute meals to people experiencing food insecurity throughout Worcester. During one recent summer, the program prepared nearly 800 meals, complete with handwritten messages of encouragement and information about local food resources.
Senator Moore and Echo also discuss the organization's Your Voice Matters initiative, which teaches young people how to identify issues affecting their communities, develop practical solutions, and present their ideas directly to elected officials and community leaders.
From food insecurity and homelessness to youth mental health, civic education, and the importance of accessible community resources, this episode highlights what can happen when young people are given the tools, encouragement, and confidence to make their voices heard.
As Echo explains, the mission isn't to tell young people what to care about. It's to teach them what to do when they care about something.

What happens when the people we depend on to keep us safe are working in buildings that may be putting their own health at risk?
In this episode of Moore Than Politics, State Senator Michael Moore sits down with filmmaker Tommy J. Dwyer and Jason Burns, executive director of the Last Call Foundation and a Fall River firefighter, to discuss the documentary Burning Down the House and the often unseen conditions inside fire stations across Massachusetts.
The conversation takes listeners inside aging and deteriorating firehouses and explores the challenges of securing funding for desperately needed repairs and replacements. Dwire and Burns explain why the issue isn't simply about making fire stations more comfortable—it's about protecting firefighters from diesel exhaust, contaminants, cancer risks and other hazards they can be exposed to long after the fire is out.
They also discuss the changing health risks of firefighting, including PFAS in protective gear, the emotional toll of responding to traumatic calls, mental health and substance abuse, and the difficulty firefighters can face when they return to the station and are expected to simply move on to the next call.
Burning Down the House was created to give the public a look behind firehouse doors—and to start a larger conversation about what communities can do to protect the people who protect them.

What happens when a simple idea to make people happy turns into a successful business?
In Episode 25 of Moore Than Politics, State Senator Michael Moore sits down with Briana "Bri" Azier, founder and owner of Bri's Sweet Treats in Worcester, to talk about the unexpected journey that turned homemade treats created during the pandemic into a growing local business.
Bri didn't start as a chocolatier. In fact, she says she didn't even have a particular passion for making candy. What she did have was a passion for giving back, creating happiness, and making a difference in her community. What began with Bri and her six-year-old son making treats for friends, family, and neighbors eventually became Bri's Sweet Treats.
The conversation goes far beyond chocolate. Bri talks candidly about what it really takes to become an entrepreneur: starting before you have everything figured out, learning from failure, building a network, finding mentors, taking advantage of business-development programs, and understanding why relationships matter.
She also explains why entrepreneurs shouldn't try to do everything alone—and why walking into a networking event simply handing out business cards isn't enough. Her approach helped take her from a new entrepreneur attending Worcester-area networking events to being named the Worcester Regional Chamber of Commerce Entrepreneur of the Year in 2023.
Bri also discusses the role her husband and son play in the family business, her work mentoring young people, her experience as a minority woman business owner, and her vision of eventually creating a much larger Bri's Sweet Treats destination in Central Massachusetts.
It's a conversation about candy—but even more, it's about entrepreneurship, community, perseverance, relationships, and having the courage to simply start.
