[…] It happens much later for working class people. Really, the post-war period is the key moment when that idea of retirement is something that you can actively envisage. It's a phase of relatively secure, leisured old age, that then becomes something that workers can imagine. And so a whole bevy of organisations begin to grow up around this new later life institution of retirement, some of which are more sort of philanthropically inclined. So there's an organisation called the Pre-Retirement Association which is founded in the 1950s. And the idea, the purpose of this organisation is to educate workers in how to prepare for retirement, because this is coming. […]
