Russia's Ministry of Defense said it shot down 605 Ukrainian drones over Russian territory and Crimea overnight. In response, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said the military struck two oil refineries deep inside Russia — the Bashneft-Novoil refinery in Bashkortostan and the Slavneft-Yanos refinery in the Yaroslavl region, roughly 700 kilometers from the border. The exchange is the latest in an escalating pattern of long-range strikes from both sides as peace efforts remain stalled.
Sudan's Humanitarian Crisis Deepens as Cholera Spreads Through War-Torn Darfur
Sudan's civil war between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces continues to fuel what aid groups call one of the world's largest and most overlooked humanitarian crises. A cholera outbreak has killed more than 100 people and infected over 1,300 across Darfur and Kordofan since late June, worsened by the destruction of water and sanitation systems and by rainy-season flooding. The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies has called for urgently expanded international support, warning that funding is falling far short of escalating needs. Around five million people in Sudan face emergency or catastrophic levels of hunger.
Iran and Oman Near Deal to Reopen Strait of Hormuz to Global Shipping
Iran and Oman say they are in the final stages of an agreement that would reopen the Strait of Hormuz to normal commercial shipping traffic, a potential step toward de-escalating one of the world's most dangerous energy flashpoints. Under the proposed mechanism, commercial vessels would enter through Iranian waters and exit through Omani waters, with service fees charged for security and environmental protection. The central sticking points remain who controls the strait and whether Iran can impose transit fees on commercial vessels. A senior Gulf official put the odds of a finalized deal by Friday at roughly 50-50, while U.S. officials have signaled cautious optimism.
_Before we move on, here's one to hold onto._
A 16-year-old lifeguard in Santa Cruz, California, rescued a child who had been swept up in dangerous surf, pulling them to safety before the situation could turn tragic. It's the kind of quick, unglamorous heroism that rarely makes a headline of its own, but it's happening on beaches and in neighborhoods every day. Further up the coast, a small dog that had been swimming for miles in San Francisco Bay was found, rescued, and reunited with its family thanks to firefighters, police officers, and a volunteer drone team who refused to give up the search. Stories like these are a reminder that alongside the world's hardest days, there are still ordinary people showing up for each other and for animals who can't ask for help. It costs nothing to notice them, and it's worth taking a moment to.
_Okay. Now, the tech._
---
💻 THE TECH CONNECTION
────────────────────────────────
(continued in YouTube show notes)

More than 25,300 refugees, including wounded fighters, have poured into Sudan since fighting began, with over 5,000 arriving in a single day. Projectiles from the fighting have landed inside refugee camps on the Sudanese side of the border, killing and wounding some of the Ethiopians who had already fled. The United Nations says it is preparing for as many as 200,000 refugees to cross in the weeks ahead, straining a Sudanese border region already stretched by that country's own ongoing civil war.

Rare Photos of Aung San Suu Kyi Give Myanmar Family a 'Reason to Hope'

New photographs released Monday show Myanmar's detained former leader Aung San Suu Kyi meeting with a Red Cross representative in the capital, Naypyitaw — the first such images to emerge since the 2021 military takeover that ousted her government. Her son, Kim Aris, told NPR the photos gave him "a reason to hope" for the first time in years, though he remains cautious and has not been briefed on his mother's health. The International Committee of the Red Cross said such visits are meant to let detainees exchange news with their families. Suu Kyi, now in her 80s, has been held largely incommunicado, and her continued detention remains a central grievance for Myanmar's pro-democracy movement.

South Korea Drops 'Denuclearization-First' Approach to North Korea

South Korea's government says it is abandoning its longstanding insistence that North Korea fully dismantle its nuclear arsenal before any sanctions relief, instead proposing to first freeze the North's current weapons production in exchange for reciprocal concessions. Unification Minister Chung Dong-young said the shift is meant to restart stalled talks by focusing on halting further nuclear advancement rather than demanding an immediate rollback of Pyongyang's existing stockpile. The policy change comes as North Korea deepens military ties with Russia and China. Experts remain skeptical Pyongyang will return to the table even with the softer approach, and the administration's own National Security Strategy has dropped references to North Korean denuclearization altogether.

---

💻 THE TECH CONNECTION
────────────────────────────────
Here's where technology meets the headlines.

The refugee surge into Sudan is also a data problem: UN agencies and NGOs on the ground are leaning on satellite imagery and AI-assisted needs-assessment tools to track fast-moving displacement in real time, in a region with almost no functioning cellular infrastructure.

Independent verification of the Suu Kyi photos relied on metadata checks and reverse-image tools now standard in conflict journalism — a reminder that authenticating rare footage from closed societies has become its own technical discipline.

Any relaxation of North Korea sanctions would ripple into tech supply chains too, given Pyongyang's well-documented use of front companies and remote IT workers to funnel funds through Western tech firms.

Nvidia and Microsoft Launch Open Secure AI Alliance, Without OpenAI, Google, or Anthropic

(continued in YouTube show notes)
