Moronic Logic

About Moronic Logic

Conversational documentarians discuss film history, directors' filmographies in chronological order, and decide what really should have won at different film award shows. Golden Boy: An Academy Awards Podcast will premiere simultaneously as both a podcast and as a show on YouTube. This show will feature regular host Kenny alongside a rotating co-host to get different unique perspectives and keep things lively. This show will chronologically go through every Academy Awards since 1929, watching every movie nominated for best picture in that year and discussing what still holds up, what should have won, and what should be left in the dust bin of history! Please feel free to let us know when we are wrong, right, way off the mark, and your own personal preferences in the comments sections wherever they might be! We encourage you to watch these movies as well and be surprised along with us with what you end up liking. This show will air new episodes on the 1st of every month! The Hitchcock Challenge (aka Presenting Alfred Hitchcock) originally premiered on YouTube and is hosted by your pals (the three morons and original founding fathers of Moronic Logic) Kenny, Sam, and Lantz. This two hour long show breaks down every movie directed by Alfred Hitchcock in chronological order, identifying recurring themes, reused actors, sources for follow up reading and whatever related minutia the hosts dig up. It is recommended you watch the Hitchcock film we are discussing before listening to our episode to avoid spoilers, and joining in on the discussion wherever comments sections are available! This show will be back! Promise!

Send us a Text Message. (https://www.buzzsprout.com/twilio/text_messages/2197617/open_sms) Welcome to Golden Boy: An Academy Awards Podcast! Join Moronic Logic monthly as Kenny enlists a rotating co-host from an assemblage of interesting and unique voices to watch every movie nominated for Best Picture in a given year and decide who SHOULD have won the Golden Boy. We do EVERYTHING in chronological order at Moronic Logic, so Episode 8 takes us to the Eighth Academy Awards, held in 1936, where Golden Boy host Kenny Cahoon and guest host Brendan Bell must decide which of 12 films is the actual Best Picture. This episode features a discussion on Nazi's and escapism invading Hollywood as Adolph Hitler gains power in Europe.  Join us and join in on the discussion! By the end of the episode only one movie (or more depending on how the discussion goes) will prevail and take home the actual Golden Boy. Brendan Bell is a professional Graphic Designer, shape-shifting musician, artist, and amateur cinephile. In the late 90’s, he left art school to pursue a career in unpopular music. He cut his teeth and other body parts as a singer/percussionist in the (mostly) confusing genre bending band Grüvis Malt, and later played drums in an offshoot project, the action/adventure, garage-prog band Ebu Gogo. He released one album as leader of the sub-regional Gameboy Pop supergroup Jonny Classic and the Classic Johns, and a handful of music including a puppet-based music video with rapper Romen Rok, before going totally solo. He has since released a pair of instrumental albums under the moniker Belll. He received a BFA in Graphic Design in 2009 and started a professional career soon after as an in-house and freelance Designer and Illustrator. During the Covid lockdown, he realized that the he had been neglecting his love of cinema, and committed to watching as many films as possible moving forward. Since deciding to watch at least a film a day in November 2021, he has seen over 1000, logging and writing reviews of varying length and quality for each of them on the Letterboxd app. What began as a hobby has become a life-affirming mental-health practice. Golden Boy #6 The 6th Academy Awards from 1934 (Depression Strikes Hollywood!)

We do EVERYTHING in chronological order at Moronic Logic, so Episode 6 takes us to the Sixth Academy Awards, held in 1934, where Golden Boy host Kenny Cahoon and guest host Jeff Somerville must decide which of 10 films is the actual Best Picture. This episode features a discussion on who actually should get credit for coming up with calling the awards Oscars, the effects of the Great Depression on Hollywood, and the end of the pre-code era and the beginning of Hollywood censorship.  Join us and join in on the discussion! By the end of the episode only one movie (or more depending on how the discussion goes) will prevail and take home the actual Golden Boy. Jeff Somerville (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cgK0FXrnWcE) For over a decade Jeff Somerville was a judge and then director of a screenwriting competition for a New England based film festival. After reading some good, and many, many bad scripts it was time to focus on his own work. One semester of an MFA in a Screenwriting program was quite enough of that for him so he decided he'd rather spend his remaining days educating the youth of America, or at least the youth of a moderately sized town in New England. Jeff also operated a small independent movie theater that prided itself on opening the Best Picture Oscar winner, whether that film deserved to win or not, for the better part of a decade. Today he coaches his daughters' softball teams and finds it a much more fulfilling experience. PS: The one best man speech our fine host Kenny is not proud of is the one he attempted at my wedding. He was co-best man and the plan was for one speech.  He performed admirably given mere seconds to prepare a speech of such magnitude. This episode was made for our YouTube channel MoronicLogic (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MiOufC8PY98&list=PLp1n_jwBcHll779NN2HitnE-HiGfR9zJ8&index=5) and is presented here as it originally premiered. Here are two great podcasts I started listening to when working on this episode! I didn't have time to try any new ones this month but when I do I will add them to the list. Oscar Podcast- The Oscars Year by Year (Sasha Stone) Episode 74b is relevant to the 1929 Academy Awards. Three knowledgable hosts with great banter.  This is where I first heard about Louis B Mayer screwing over The Crowd (1928) for all time. https://luminarypodcasts.com/listen/s... The Hitchcock Challenge #2: The Mountain Eagle! (Hitchcock's LOST 1926 film)

Send us a Text Message. (https://www.buzzsprout.com/twilio/text_messages/2197617/open_sms) Welcome to the second episode of The Hitchcock Challenge! Episode 2 Features a deep dive into Hitchcock's lost film, The Mountain Eagle! This episode has been adapted from our Youtube video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dmZjO2xV89k&t=2s) where we SHOW each surviving photograph in (our theoretical) chronological order in order to understand the plot of the missing film. Here we describe each photo and postulate what it all means, and ask the question...should this film be found?? (The answer is YES, PLEASE!) Join Kenny, Sam, and Lantz as they watch every movie directed by Alfred Hitchcock in chronological order and break them down in extreme detail.  The first ten episodes, covering Hitchcock’s silent career originally premiered (or will premiere) on YouTube as Presenting Alfred Hitchcock. Future episodes will be made with the podcast in mind. This series is about reviving the excitement for these old movies, looking at them through a modern lens and actually challenging ourselves to step away from Netflix and corporate TV we normally love and consume. We do the research on the behind the scenes gossip, break down iconic and less than iconic scenes, give Maguffin reviews and talk WAY longer than anyone else you'll find online. Hitchcock history is discussed and we will add relevant research materials to the episode bio’s for your own further reading! Unfortunately, The Hitchcock Challenge will NOT have a regular schedule. New episodes will air as we are able to complete them. The challenge for you is to watch all of his films in chronological order with or without us! It will be a worthy endeavor, we promise! Recommended Reading! 1. Dan Auiler's Book "Hitchcock Lost The Lost Silent Hitchcock and Frenzy 67 (https://www.barnesandnoble.com/w/hitchcock-lost-the-lost-silent-hitchcock-and-frenzy-67-dan-auiler/1117497859)" available at the link. This book is invaluable for those of you interested in this Lost film. 2. The Hitchcock Zone.com (https://the.hitchcock.zone/wiki/The_Mountain_Eagle_(1926)) is THE site for Hitchcock fans looking for comprehensive collections of scholarship and primary sources on all of Hitchcock's films. We love and recommend that site! in particular it will link you to the work of JL Kunhs one of the best and earliest Hitchcock Scholars! (Link to the Mountain Eagle page) 3. "Hitchcock/Truffaut, The Definitive study of Alfred Hitchcock" by Francois Truffaut and 4. Taschen's "Alfred Hitchcock: The Complete Films" edited by Paul Duncan are the two books we lean on the most and should be in the collection of every Hitchcock mega fan! Check out Golden Boy! Golden Boy #1: The 1929 Academy Awards!

We do EVERYTHING in chronological order at Moronic Logic, so Episode 1 takes us to the 1929 Academy Awards, where Golden Boy host Kenny Cahoon and his first co-host Cyrus Leddy must decide which of 8 films is the actual Best Picture. We combine the three films nominated for Best Outstanding Picture: Wings, The Racket, and 7th Heaven, with the three films nominated for Best Unique and Artistic Picture (a category that was abandoned after the first awards show!) Sunrise, The Crowd, and Chang... and then we throw in the two films that were held out of competition and given Special Awards: The Jazz Singer and The Circus. By the end of the episode only one movie (or two if we do not agree) will prevail and take home the actual Golden Boy. Cyrus Leddy is a writer and comedian living in New York City. He is the host of the radio talk show "Bucci" on WFMU, Tuesdays 6-7pm EST. Listen live on 91.9fm in NYC/NJ or at wfmu.org. And call-in live at 201-209-9368. It's fun, you'll see.
