[…] The sheer number of diseases the Scots were exposed to at Darien was terrifying. There were mosquito carrying tropical diseases such as yellow fever and malaria, as well as smallpox, cholera, dysentery, typhoid, and plant diseases and insects that destroyed crops and agriculture. More diseases were being spread in a foreign climate than on an 18 to 30 holiday. Torrential rains between May and November brought regular flooding and destroyed any crops that the colonists attempted to plant at New Caledonia. And with it raining five months of the year, the Scots, they really struggled to adapt to such unseasonably dry conditions. […]
