In this week's episode, the three main characters of the book of Acts: the Gospel, the Church and the Holy Spirit are at play. The Church begins to experience persecution for their belief in Jesus, they're scattered across the region, but instead of stopping the mission, God uses their circumstances to carry the Good News of Jesus into new places to reach new people.
God sends Philip on a desert road into Samaria to cross paths with an Ethiopian official. We learn how one act of obedience and one conversation can change someone’s eternity. Philip follows the Holy Spirit’s leading, opens the Scriptures, and points to Jesus. His example challenges us to recognize the opportunities God places right in front of us to share our faith.
We’re reminded that the gospel is more powerful than our prejudices, preferences, and social boundaries—and that sometimes the people we’re most tempted to avoid are the very people God is calling us to love and reach. Whether you’re facing an unexpected setback, struggling to make room for someone different from you, or wondering how to start a conversation about Jesus, the question is simple: will you simply attend the movement or become part of it?

Growing Pains & Growing Leaders
Did you know that the early church wasn't perfect? Yes, the Holy Spirit was present but this doesn't make someone immediately perfect. As we continue through the book of Acts, we learn that as the church grows so does its challenges. We see that a healthy church doesn't ignore problems, it humbly solves them.
We're introduced to Stephen, an ordinary servant whose life was marked by faith, grace, wisdom, and the power of the Holy Spirit. His story reminds us that God isn’t looking for impressive people; He’s looking for surrendered people. Stephen went from serving others to boldly proclaiming Jesus before hostile leaders, ultimately remaining faithful even when it cost him his life. This episode is focused on one thing: Spirit-filled people stay faithful when following Jesus gets costly.

Pretending vs. Surrendering
In the book of Acts, we encounter the sobering story of Ananias and Sapphira and discover that this passage is about much more than money. Luke intentionally contrasts their counterfeit generosity with Barnabas’ genuine surrender, revealing the difference between being generous and looking generous, between surrendering and pretending. The issue wasn't that Ananias and Sapphira kept part of their money—it was that they wanted the reputation of sacrifice without the reality of surrender.
We are challenged to examine the ways we curate our own spiritual image. Just as we can present a carefully edited version of our lives to others, we can become more concerned with appearing surrendered than actually being surrendered to God. Yet the gospel reminds us that God already knows the unedited version of our lives—and He still invites us to come to Him. Integrity matters more to God than your image.
Acts shows us a community that isn't powerful because everyone is perfect, but because people are learning to live honestly before God and one another. Where are you pretending? Are you managing your image instead of surrendering your heart?
