Today, I have a spooky conversation with Stacey Rae Godoy, LMFT, an expert in culture, AI, and bologna sandwiches. We talk about the 2025 Netflix movie Frankenstein. Luckily, Dr. Victor Frankenstein and the Creature are in no way analogous to capitalism and AI. I mean… can you imagine???
We explore all the freaky Oedipal stuff. The Frankenstein men definitely have a type! We also talk about fathers and sons, and the Blind Man’s role as a surrogate father.
Along the way, we get into trauma, grief, ethics, forgiveness, and the importance of communicating that you’re not the killer, should the question arise.

Top Gun, Leadership, and Sport Psychology with Dr. Aaron Peterson
“Gentlemen, you are the top one percent of all naval aviators. The elite. The best of the best. We’ll make you better.”
I sit down with professor of leadership, author, Trekkie, and pilot Dr. Aaron Peterson to talk about the 1980s beach volleyball classic, Top Gun. Along the way, we discuss the movie’s cinematic beauty, its dramatization of military realities, and its impact on kids everywhere who developed the need… the need for speed. High five!
Dr. Peterson, or “Petey,” as his RIO calls him, debriefs us on the importance of leaders having a trusted confidant and grounded advisor like Goose. We explore how the rivalry between Maverick and Iceman demonstrates the interplay between instinct and discipline. And during our debrief, Petey debriefs us on the importance of a structured debrief. Go figure!

Little Mermaid (1989) and sport psychology with Leslie Trujillo, MA
“The seaweed is always greener
in somebody else’s lake.”
Jumping jellyfish, the human world is a mess! So, I take a moment to discuss life under the sea with Leslie Trujillo, MA, as we look back on the 1989 Disney classic The Little Mermaid.
Before Leslie became the athletic director at Los Angeles Harbor College, she went on an adventure pursuing her passion as a collegiate strength and conditioning coach. She later published the book Dear Her, which reminds girls and young women that one day their struggles will become their strengths. (I have a copy autographed by both Leslie and her daughter!)
We discussed our experience of rewatching the classic and realizing that crabby old Sebastian was right about a lot of things after all. Who knew that making a Faustian bargain with a sea witch could be a bad idea? We discussed the dangers of acting impulsively when experiencing strong emotions. Leslie seems to think it’s not wise to make life-altering decisions to pursue a relationship with someone you’ve never met.
We also discussed how Ariel faced challenges like a champion athlete. You won’t see her getting cold fins. We explored the importance of Ariel’s oceanic support system, which helped her on her mission. Whether we’re talking about life on land or under the sea, it takes a village.
