Welcome back to Movies at Midnight!
This week, we’re continuing Nikki’s Birth Month with our review of Mad God, directed by Phil Tippit.
We follow our protagonist, known simply as The Assassin, as he descends into a desolate wasteland that has been ravished by warfare. As the Assassin makes his way through this land, he encounters many strange things; giants being electrocuted, a society ran on slavery by creatures made of feces, and a valley full of suitcase bombs. As the Assassin readies himself to set off his own suitcase bomb, he is captured and subjected to torture himself. What follows is an odyssey of strange new lands and creatures that occupy this hellscape.
Mad God is a film that Phil Tippit has been working on for over 30 years, starting in the 80s and finishing in 2021. The film found a distributor with the streaming service Shudder, and while critics have praised the film, many audiences seem to be split on their opinions. The film gains praise on its amazing stop motion visuals, but are confused by the films lack of coherent narrative. But does Nikki and Cody agree with audiences on those opinions? Listen to their review to find out!
