About Moving Forward - Weekly Lectionary Podcast

Preaching Friends! You've got a lot to do, caring for your folks, going to meetings, doing visits, planning and praying. Let me help you with the preaching research! Every Monday (before the following Sunday) let me give you 10ish minutes of thoughts on the Revised Common Lectionary Bible passages so that you don't have to wait until Saturday night to get started on that sermon (or if you do wait, you're never starting from scratch!). My focus in research and preaching is connecting to the lived experience of humans in the texts. Far too often we are looking for analogies or quick take-aways and miss the opportunity to treasure the stories of humans who interacted with God and each other - just like we do! I hold a Ph.D. in Jewish Religious Cultures [Emory], a M.A. in Near Eastern Languages and Cultures (Arabic & Hebrew) [Ohio State], a M.Div. [Luther Seminary] and have been a Deacon and then Pastor in the ELCA for a whole long time!

   Prioritizing Like Jesus

Leviticus 19:1-2, 15-18; Matthew 22:34-46 My students introduced me to the concept of -maxxing. Sleep-maxxing, gym-maxxing, study-maxxing... the list continues. How do we spend our time, where do we focus? AND, most crucially for me, how do we avoid burning out, getting task paralyzed, and getting so overwhelmed that we cannot do anything? Leviticus and Jesus have some words of wisdom [unsurprisingly] for how to prioritize in life.

   Recognizing Faces

Isaiah 45:1-7; Matthew 22:15-22 - Recognition makes a huge deal. If our work is recognized, we feel valued. If someone doesn't recognize us at a party or in a social context, we might feel confused, or even hurt. This week, we have two stories of recognizing faces, or not. Cyrus and Jesus are the centers of two episodes where initially not recognizing leads to revealing what God is doing.

   A Banquet for Enemies?!?

Isaiah 25:1-9; Psalm 23; Matthew 22:1-14 - Listen, who hasn't sat down at one point in their lives and tried to do the difficult task of selecting who is in and who is out for a party? At your wedding reception, or even Friday dinner parties, food costs money, there's limited seating, and sometime Uncle George gets a little weird with the conspiracy theories... This week, we have three stories about banquets that God prepares, and who is invited to eat, or not...
