Episode 12 — Run the Loop: Use It in Your Own Home

You have moved in. You have watched where things land, followed your routines, adjusted rooms, shortened repeated paths, created places for unfinished tasks to pause, and built lower-capacity versions of the things that still need to work. Now it is time to run the loop on your own home. In this final episode of Moving In: A Closed Loop Home Guide, we bring the whole method together and use the Closed Loop Code to evaluate one real part of everyday life. The Code is simple: EVENT — What is actually happening? NEED — What has to become possible? FRICTION — Where does the sequence get harder? SUPPORT — What can the environment carry? EXIT — How can the event end without creating the next problem? Then ask one separate question: Does it still work at 20%? The order matters. EVENT keeps the problem specific. Instead of trying to “fix the kitchen,” you might look at unloading groceries, making coffee, or cleaning up after dinner. NEED keeps the goal connected to the person using the home. FRICTION helps you find the actual break in the routine instead of jumping straight to a product. SUPPORT gives the environment responsibility for part of the work. EXIT protects whatever happens next. The 20% Test comes afterward because a system can look great on a good day and still depend on more energy, remembering, setup, maintenance, or motivation than you can reliably promise. We also step back from individual rooms and look at the home as one connected day. Morning affects leaving. Leaving affects arrival. Groceries affect cooking. Work affects rest. Bedtime affects tomorrow morning. A home is not a collection of isolated rooms. It is a series of events and transitions that keep handing something to the next part of the day. That is why the best solution is not always the biggest one. Sometimes the useful change is turning the desk away from distracting movement, creating a landing surface where groceries actually enter, putting coffee supplies together around the sequence, moving a charger to the point of use, or giving bedtime one easy lighting transition. Then test what you changed in real life. Installation is not the finish line. The first solution is a hypothesis. Did the repeated trip disappear? Did the surface stay usable? Did the support create another chore? Did someone else inherit the maintenance? Can you still use it on a lower-capacity day? Does it feel good enough to keep? If the answer is no, that is not failure. It is new information. Move it. Simplify it. Duplicate it. Remove it. Change the visibility. Shorten the path. Try a smaller answer. Revision is part of the method. A Closed Loop Home learns. For your final exercise, choose one low-stakes routine and write one sentence for each part of the Code: Event, Need, Friction, Support, and Exit. Then ask: Does it still work at 20%? Keep the first experiment small enough to test. You do not have to redesign your entire home at once. Follow one repeated behavior, find one place where the environment is asking too much, change one thing, and learn from what happens next. Then run the loop again. The loop is closed when the support carries you through the moment and leaves the next moment intact. Episode 11 — The 20% House: Design for Low-Energy Days

A home should not work beautifully only when you do. In this episode of Moving In: A Closed Loop Home Guide, we take the ideas from the entire series and ask one of the most important Closed Loop questions: Does this still work at 20%? The 20% Test is not a diagnosis or a literal measurement of your energy. It is a deliberately low design condition: a day when your usual energy, attention, patience, time, mobility, decision-making, or access to help is sharply reduced. Those are the days when hidden requirements become obvious. The extra trip across the house. The charger that is never where you need it. The meal that only works if you have enough energy to cook. The laundry system that requires every step to be completed before anything is usable. The entry that functions only if everyone remembers the full routine. The bedtime setup that needs a reset before you can rest. A 20% House asks the home to keep essential life available anyway. We look at how to build three legitimate versions of an important routine: The full path: what happens when you have the capacity for the whole sequence. The reduced path: a shorter version that still preserves the main function. The minimum safe path: the smallest acceptable action that protects health, safety, access, or whatever has to happen next. That could mean a full cooked meal, a familiar low-effort meal, and a ready option that keeps food accessible. It could mean laundry fully returned to closets, clean clothes hanging in the laundry room, or a dedicated clean-clothes basket that keeps clothing usable without mixing it with dirty laundry. The reduced version is not a failed version of the “real” routine. If it keeps the room safe, usable, and easy to re-enter, it is a complete low-capacity path. We also look at the consequence tail of shortcuts. A shortcut can preserve energy and still leave something behind: takeout creates packaging, a laundry basket leaves sorting for later, and a paused task still needs a safe place to wait. Good fallback design does not pretend those consequences disappear. It keeps them bounded enough that tomorrow is not punished for what helped today. And the lower-capacity option should not be the ugly, embarrassing version hidden away for emergencies. Low-battery mode still gets the nice version. The basket can be beautiful. The easy meal can be something you actually like. The lamp can create the kind of light that feels good. The support can belong in the room instead of looking like evidence that the “better” system failed. Choose one essential routine in your home and build three versions of it: full, reduced, and minimum safe. Then give each version a clear exit. You are not designing for your worst day. You are designing so the house does not abandon you when the day is harder than expected. Episode 10 — Design the Bedroom Backward from Sleep

A bedroom can look completely finished and still make bedtime harder than it needs to be. In this episode of Moving In: A Closed Loop Home Guide, we stop designing the bedroom around the bed, dresser, and nightstands and start with something more useful: the sequence that has to happen before the day can actually let you go. Sleep does not begin when the room looks calm. It begins after you finish whatever came before, move through the house, change clothes, wash up, charge devices, get water, adjust the lighting, put down what is in your hands, think about tomorrow, and finally reach the point where nothing else needs to happen before you can stay in bed. That entire transition belongs in the design. We begin by looking at what repeatedly travels into the bedroom at night. Your phone, glasses, water, medication, book, headphones, clothing, charger, or tomorrow’s essentials may need a real landing place close to where they are actually used. Small distances matter when you repeat them every night. Then we look at clothing, because real life contains far more states than simply “clean and put away” or “dirty and in the hamper.” There are pajamas you will wear again. Clothes worn once but not ready for laundry. Tomorrow’s outfit. Clean clothes that have not completed the trip back to the closet. When the room gives those middle states no legitimate place, the chair, bench, or floor becomes the system. Instead of repeatedly fighting the pile, we design the state. This episode also explores visibility as a setting. What can you see from your pillow? Laundry? Your desk? An open closet? Half-unpacked boxes? A work bag? Tomorrow’s responsibilities? Those things may be perfectly appropriate during the day and still be information you no longer need to receive at bedtime. The room does not have to hide everything. It needs permission to stop presenting everything at once. We look at ways furniture placement, curtains, doors, screens, storage, or a narrower sightline can help the bedroom shift from an active daytime environment into a quieter nighttime state. Lighting works the same way. The light you need to clean, dress, or find something does not have to be the light you use while winding down. A bedroom can have multiple usable lighting states instead of relying on one overhead fixture for everything. We also talk about giving people control over airflow, temperature, sound, window coverings, door position, and other comfort settings — especially when two people share a bedroom and do not need exactly the same environment. Then we connect bedtime to tomorrow morning. A charged device, glasses in the same place, one ready outfit, and a clear path from bed to bathroom can make the next morning easier without turning bedtime into another preparation project. Finally, run the 20% Test. On the night when you are exhausted, can you still get safely into bed, change into something comfortable, let clothing land somewhere bounded, charge what you need, reach water, lower the light, and allow the rest of the house to wait? The full bedtime routine and the lower-capacity bedtime do not have to look the same. Both can still work. Rest should not begin only after the entire house has earned it. Tonight, do not start by cleaning the bedroom. Watch the last thirty minutes before sleep and change one repeated point of friction. A bedroom is not finished because the bed is made. It is working when the room can help you stop. Moving In is a practical companion series based on the Closed Loop Home framework created by interior designer Crystal Bright. Episode 9 — Keep the Project Ready Without Letting It Take Over

If there is something you genuinely want to do at home — paint, sew, build, puzzle, scrapbook, garden, make music, repair something, or work on a project with your child — but every session begins with finding supplies and ends with putting the whole thing away, the room may be making the hobby harder than the hobby itself. In this episode of Moving In: A Closed Loop Home Guide, we look at how to make hobbies and ongoing projects easier to begin, safer to pause, and simpler to return to without letting unfinished work take over the room. Stop organizing only by category and ask what has to be ready together when you actually want to begin. If the current project requires finding the box, clearing a table, locating tools, rebuilding the setup, and gathering supplies from several rooms, then setup has become part of the friction. This is where Activity Storage can help. Instead of storing every object only with similar objects, keep the active project together around the sequence it supports. The current knitting project can stay with the needles and pattern you are actually using. A child’s school project can stay with its active materials. An art project can keep its specific tools together without putting the entire art-supply collection on display. Then we deal with the part most organizing systems miss: the middle. A project is not always either active or finished. A puzzle may need the dining table for a while. A sewing project may need to stay oriented between sessions. Glue may need to dry. A model may have small pieces that cannot be rebuilt from scratch every time you sit down. That is where a Designed Staging State comes in: a safe, bounded, retrievable form the project can take while it waits. A rigid board, tray, rolling cart, project basket, or lidded container can let the room change jobs without erasing your place. A task can have an exit without being finished. We also talk about visibility as a setting. A project may need to stay fully visible while you are working, become softened or partially contained during dinner, and move into more protected storage if it will be inactive for a while. The goal is not to choose between “leave everything out” and “hide everything away.” It is to find the amount of visibility that helps you return without making the whole room keep asking for your attention. A staging state is permission to pause, not permission to ignore anything wet, hot, sharp, unstable, electrical, toxic, or otherwise time-sensitive. Before you walk away, preserve the next action. Leave the next tool ready, put a note where you will see it, or keep one cue connected to the place where the future action can happen. Then run the 20% Test: could you do a smaller version of the hobby without rebuilding the entire setup? The things you do for pleasure deserve infrastructure too. Choose one project you actually want to return to and follow one complete session from beginning to pause. Notice what has to be retrieved, what surface it needs, what makes stopping difficult, and what would help you know exactly where to begin next time. Then create one better pause. Something you love should not require rebuilding the world every time you want to do it. Episode 8 — Make Work Easier to Start — and Easier to Stop

Where you work matters, but not because every home needs a perfect office. If you keep setting up a desk and then drifting to the kitchen table, sofa, porch, or another room, that behavior is useful information. In this episode of Moving In: A Closed Loop Home Guide, we follow the full work sequence instead of assuming the room labeled “office” is automatically the right answer. We look at what happens when work begins, what helps you stay with it, what repeatedly pulls you away, and what needs to happen so the workday can actually end. You’ll learn how to notice the small interruptions that quietly make work harder: getting up for the charger, water, headphones, glasses, a notebook, or the same cable every day; sitting where glare, traffic, sound, or movement keeps pulling your attention; and setting up a workspace that only works when everything is going perfectly. This episode also explores point-of-need support — keeping frequently used tools close to the place where the need actually happens — and why one accurate change can matter more than a complete office makeover. We also talk about giving work more than one usable state. Maybe focused work happens at a desk, while reading or thinking works better in a softer chair nearby. Maybe the room needs brighter task lighting during the day and a warmer state when work is over. Maybe you move while you work and need a setup that lets you shift position without losing the task. Then we deal with one of the biggest problems in work-from-home spaces: unfinished work. Papers spread. Samples stay out. Projects take over the dining table. A setup you need tomorrow cannot always be fully dismantled tonight. That is where a Designed Staging State can help: a tray, active-project box, mobile file, charging drawer, or rolling cart that lets work pause without disappearing and lets the room become available for something else. The work is not finished. It is contained. Finally, we design the end of the workday. When there is no commute, the room needs another way to recognize that work is over. A short closing sequence might mean charging the laptop, containing the active project, changing the lighting, putting headphones away, and leaving one simple cue for where to begin tomorrow. The shutdown should be shorter than the recovery it protects. Before you redesign your whole office, sit where you actually work and notice four moments: beginning, working, pausing, and ending. Find one repeated point of friction and change that first. Your work setup does not need to look like an office. It needs to support the work. Episode 7 — Organize the Kitchen Around Eating, Not Cabinets

A kitchen can be beautifully organized and still make ordinary meals harder than they need to be. In this episode of Moving In: A Closed Loop Home Guide, we stop organizing the kitchen around cabinets and start following the full food sequence instead: groceries coming in, food being stored, meals beginning, preparation, cooking, eating, cleanup, and getting the kitchen ready to do it all again. You’ll learn how to: create a useful grocery landing surface shorten the path from bags to refrigerator, pantry, recycling, and trash organize everyday tools around the meals you actually make use Activity Storage to keep frequently used items together by function protect a clear prep surface instead of filling every inch of counter notice repeated movement between the refrigerator, sink, prep area, stove, and waste design the return path for dishes, leftovers, wrappers, and cleanup create a realistic low-effort food path for harder days reduce the “consequence tail” that can follow takeout, ready meals, and shortcuts The goal is not a perfectly labeled kitchen. It is a kitchen that makes eating easier. Before you reorganize another cabinet, choose one meal you eat several times a week and follow the complete path from the moment the food enters your home until the kitchen is ready for that meal to happen again. Then change one repeated point of friction. The cabinets are there to support the sequence. The sequence does not exist to justify the cabinets. Episode 6 — Design the Door: Leaving Home and Coming Back

Your entry is not just where you keep your shoes. It is the place where one part of your day ends and another begins. In this episode of Moving In: A Closed Loop Home Guide, we design the doorway as a transition point: the place that helps you leave with what you need and come home without immediately creating another problem to solve. Start with the door you actually use. Maybe guests come through the front door, but your real life comes through the garage or side entrance. That is the entry that deserves your attention first. Then look at what happens right before you leave. Keys. Shoes. Phone. Bag. Sunglasses. Water bottle. Work badge. A child’s folder. A return package. Maybe medication, headphones, or something you keep forgetting until you are already halfway out the door. Those things do not belong to one category. They belong to one event: leaving the house. So instead of asking only, “Where should the keys live?” ask: What needs to be ready together when I leave? That might mean a key hook closer to the door, a charger near the exit, a place for tomorrow’s school items, or one visible spot for things that need to leave the house next. Then we reverse direction. You come home carrying a bag, mail, groceries, a jacket, keys, maybe a drink, maybe a child’s backpack, and your hands are already full. Most entry advice assumes that arriving home and resetting everything are the same task. But they do not have to be. Arrival first. Reset later. In the Closed Loop Home framework, this is where a landing state matters: the first safe place where you and the things you are carrying can pause without needing to complete the entire reset immediately. That might look like a tray for keys, a hook for the daily bag, a shoe landing, a basket for clothing that comes off right away, or a surface where mail can wait without disappearing into the house. The first landing does not have to be the final destination. Sometimes an object needs a temporary place that protects the next step. A library book may need to wait near the door instead of returning to the bookshelf. A package going back tomorrow may need to move toward the exit instead of deeper into the house. A school form may need somewhere visible until it is signed and repacked. A jacket may need a “wear again” state instead of immediately becoming laundry or closet storage. We’ll also look at the things already collecting near your entry. A pile is not automatically proof that you are bad at putting things away. It may be showing you where the house is missing support. The bag dropped on a chair may be asking for a hook. The shoes in the hallway may be showing you where people actually want them off. The mail on the counter may be landing at the first surface your hands can reach. Before correcting the behavior, understand the event. Then make the same behavior easier, cleaner, and safer. Your entry should also support the first few minutes after you get home. Maybe you need water. Maybe you change clothes. Maybe the dog has to go outside. Maybe a child needs a snack before anything else can happen. Maybe you need a few quiet minutes before moving into the rest of the evening. The doorway is not just storage. Moving In is based on the Closed Loop Home framework created by interior designer Crystal Bright. The Closed Loop Home releases October 31st and goes deeper into open loops, the Closed Loop Code, the 20% House, point-of-need support, Activity Storage, transitions, and the full framework behind designing a home around the life that actually happens inside it. Episode 5 — Your First Morning: Design the Path Before You Organize the House

Your first morning in a new home can tell you more about how the house needs to work than a perfectly organized closet ever could. In this episode of Moving In: A Closed Loop Home Guide, we stop thinking room by room and follow one complete sequence instead: waking up and getting out the door. Because mornings do not happen in one room. You wake up in the bedroom. You move into the bathroom. You get dressed. Maybe you make coffee or breakfast, take medication, feed a pet, help a child get ready, fill a water bottle, find your keys, grab your bag, and leave. Every transition asks something from the home. So instead of trying to finish organizing everything at once, we’ll walk through your actual morning and notice where the house can make that path easier. Where do you reach first when you wake up? What needs to be beside the bed? Where do clothes come from, and where do worn clothes go? What do you need in the bathroom before you can move on? What has to happen in the kitchen? What do you repeatedly search for right before leaving? And which small interruption has the power to slow the whole morning down? This is the Closed Loop approach to designing a routine: look at the full event, identify what needs to become possible, notice where friction appears, and put support close to the point where the need actually happens. Sometimes the solution is tiny. A charger moves closer to the bed. Tomorrow’s clothes get one reliable landing place. Medication moves somewhere appropriate and easier to reach. The coffee supplies that are always used together begin living closer together. A child’s school items stop traveling between several rooms every morning. A water bottle gets filled at the same point in the sequence instead of becoming the last thing you remember while standing at the door. The point is not to create a flawless morning routine. The point is to make the routine require less searching, backtracking, remembering, and restarting. We’ll also talk about why your first setup should stay flexible. You may think something belongs in one drawer because that location looks logical. Then three mornings later, you realize you keep walking past it. That is useful information. Your first arrangement is not a promise. It is a test. As you live in the new home, let repeated behavior help you refine where things belong. For this episode, your exercise is simple: Walk through one normal morning in order. Notice every place you stop, turn around, search, carry something between rooms, or think, “I need to remember that.” Then choose one of those moments and make it easier. You do not need to optimize the entire morning today. Just remove one repeated point of friction and see what changes. Listen while you get ready, unpack your bedroom and bathroom, set up the kitchen, or move through your first few mornings in the new house. Moving In is based on the Closed Loop Home framework created by interior designer Crystal Bright. The Closed Loop Home releases October 31st and goes deeper into open loops, the Closed Loop Code, the 20% House, point-of-need support, Activity Storage, and the full framework behind designing a home around the life that actually happens inside it. Episode 4 — Your Floor Plan Is a Suggestion

The floor plan says dining room. But what if you never eat there? It says guest room. But what if guests visit three nights a year and you need a workspace every day? In this episode of Moving In: A Closed Loop Home Guide, we stop treating room labels like instructions and ask a more useful question: What does our life need this space to do? Room names are helpful shorthand. They do not know where the afternoon light is unbearable, which room is quiet enough for work, where your child naturally does homework, or which “secondary” room becomes the place everyone actually wants to be. That information comes from living. In the Closed Loop Home framework, repeated behavior is design data. Where you naturally sit matters. Which room you keep returning to matters. Which spaces you avoid matter. Where work migrates, where projects spread out, and where your body wants to rest are all clues about what the home is being asked to support. So instead of asking, “What is this room supposed to be?” we ask, “What needs to happen here?” Maybe your dining room really is the perfect dining room. Keep it. The goal is not to make your home unconventional. The goal is to make it accurate. But if the dining table mostly collects things while you work at an uncomfortable kitchen counter, notice that. If the guest room stays empty most of the year while your hobbies are packed away after every use, notice that too. We’ll also talk about giving rooms a primary job and a secondary job when one space has to support several parts of life. A dining room might function mostly as a project space while still hosting meals. A guest room might support work every day and visitors when they actually arrive. And furniture placement gets easier once you start with the activity instead of the object. Rather than asking, “Where does the sofa look best?” ask, “What is going to happen here most often?” If the room is for conversation, support conversation. If it is for movies, think about sightlines. If it is for work, think about light, power, storage, distractions, and how the workday ends. If it is for rest, pay attention to what actually helps the people using it settle. Because you are newly moved in, you also have permission to test. The sofa can move. The office can change rooms. A layout can work for a week and then be revised. The first arrangement does not have to become the final answer. In this episode, you’ll do a simple exercise: temporarily remove the inherited room labels and replace them with the functions your household actually needs. Instead of dining room, you might write: shared table, homework, projects, hosting. Instead of guest room: work, quiet, exercise, occasional guests. Instead of living room: rest, conversation, movies, play. Then ask which room actually supports those functions best. Think about light, noise, privacy, temperature, power, storage, proximity to other routines, how often the activity happens, and who else shares the space. The answer may match the original floor plan—or it may not. Either way, you are making the decision with better information. Listen while you move furniture, debate room assignments, or realize that the room everyone told you was supposed to be important is not actually the one you want to live in. Moving In is based on the Closed Loop Home framework created by interior designer Crystal Bright. Episode 3 — Unpack by Activity, Not by Room

You’re surrounded by boxes, and the question you keep asking is: Where does this go? In this episode of Moving In: A Closed Loop Home Guide, we change that question. Instead of organizing your new home around categories alone, we start organizing around the activities and routines your home actually needs to support. That means asking: What does this object help me do? Where does that activity happen? And what needs to be ready together there? This is the idea behind Activity Storage, a Closed Loop Home principle that organizes around complete activities and points of use, rather than assuming every object should live with other objects in the same category. This episode will also help you resist the pressure to fill every cabinet and drawer immediately. An empty shelf does not need an answer today. A temporary placement is allowed. A basket for things whose final home is still unclear is allowed. The first arrangement is a hypothesis. Living with it gives you better information. And if something keeps getting left out, moved, carried, or returned to the same place, don’t automatically treat that as a problem to correct. Repeated landing places can tell you where an activity actually happens and where the home may need to adapt. The goal is not to create the most unconventional home possible. The goal is to create the most useful one. So before you unpack the next box, choose one routine you know will happen again tomorrow and walk through it. Ask: What happens first? What do I reach for next? What am I carrying? Where do I have to leave the task to retrieve something? What needs to happen at the end? Then ask the Activity Storage question: What needs to be ready together here? Use that answer to decide where the next few things belong. You do not need to find the forever-home for every object in one weekend. You are building a home that makes the things you already do easier to continue. Listen while you unpack, organize, label, rearrange, or stand in front of a half-empty cabinet wondering what should actually go there. Moving In is a practical companion series based on the Closed Loop Home framework created by interior designer Crystal Bright. The book, The Closed Loop Home, releases October 31st and goes deeper into open loops, the Closed Loop Code, the 20% House, point-of-need support, Activity Storage, and the full framework behind designing a home around the life that actually happens inside it. Follow @theclosedloophome on Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube for more Closed Loop ideas, and follow or subscribe to the podcast wherever you listen so the next part of the guide is ready when you need it. In the next episode: we zoom out from the objects to the rooms themselves and ask one of the biggest questions in the whole series: does the room really have to do what the floor plan says it should?

Episode 2 — Move-In Day: Build the Access Floor

The boxes are coming through the door. The furniture is landing wherever there is space. Every room looks unfinished, and suddenly everything feels urgent. It isn’t. Your first job on move-in day is not to unpack the whole house. It is to make sure tonight and tomorrow morning can actually work. In this episode of Moving In: A Closed Loop Home Guide, we’re building what the Closed Loop Home framework calls the Access Floor: the minimum condition where essential life is reachable and usable before you start organizing, decorating, or optimizing anything else. That means protecting the parts of the home your everyday life depends on first. Can you safely enter and leave? Can you reach the bathroom? Can you sleep? Can you get water and something to eat? Can you find essential medications and personal items? Can you see well enough to move through the house? Can you charge your phone, control the temperature, and connect to the systems your household depends on? Those questions matter more on move-in day than whether every box is in the correct room. We’ll walk through how to create a usable first-night path through the house, beginning at the front door and following the order life actually happens: entry, bathroom, food and water, charging, sleep, and the next morning. You’ll also learn why box placement matters more than it seems. A box can technically be in the “right room” and still make the room impossible to use. Kitchen boxes stacked in front of the cabinets can block food preparation. Bedroom boxes piled onto the bed can turn sleep into another unpacking project. A hallway used as temporary storage can erase the route through the house entirely. So instead of filling every available surface, we’ll protect a few important things: clear pathways, a usable bed, an accessible bathroom, one open kitchen surface, essential lighting, charging, and a place for the things you need immediately. We’ll also talk about creating a dedicated first-day essentials bag or container so bedding, toiletries, medication, chargers, toilet paper, towels, basic food, cleaning supplies, and other immediate needs do not disappear into the larger move. Your exact essentials will be different. The principle is the same: something important should not become a search problem simply because it entered the house at the same time as everything else. And perhaps most importantly, this episode gives you permission to stop. Moving can make every unfinished room feel like an emergency. But unfinished is not the same thing as unusable. The books can wait. The artwork can wait. The guest-room closet can wait. The perfect kitchen organization system can wait. If you can move through the house safely, use the bathroom, eat, drink, sleep, charge what you need, and wake up tomorrow able to begin the next day, you have already created something important. You have built a floor underneath the rest of the move. Listen while the truck is on the way, while you unload, while boxes are stacking up, or at the end of your first night in the new home. Moving In is a practical companion series based on the Closed Loop Home framework created by interior designer Crystal Bright. The book, The Closed Loop Home, releases October 31st and goes deeper into open loops, the Closed Loop Code, the 20% House, point-of-need support, and the complete framework behind designing a home around the life that actually happens inside it. Follow @theclosedloophome on Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube for more Closed Loop ideas, and follow or subscribe to the podcast wherever you listen so the next part of the guide is ready when you need it. In the next episode: we start unpacking, but instead of simply recreating the organization of your old house, we’ll begin placing things around the activities and routines they actually support.

Before You Move In: Use the Empty-House Window

You have the keys. The house is empty. And for a very short period of time, almost everything is still possible. Before the furniture arrives, before the cabinets get filled, before the television is mounted and the sofa settles into a spot you never reconsider, you have something incredibly valuable: access. This first episode of Moving In: A Closed Loop Home Guide is about using that empty-house window well. Whether you have two weeks between homes, three days, one afternoon, or just a few hours before the moving truck arrives, this is the moment to handle the things that become significantly harder once your life is inside the space. We’ll talk about what is worth doing now, what can wait, and why trying to make every decision before move-in can actually create more work later. You’ll learn how to think about repairs, cleaning, painting, flooring, lighting, internet, utilities, and the other basic systems that make a home actually usable. We’ll also introduce the Access Floor—the minimum level of function your home needs so that you can sleep, shower, eat, charge your devices, move through the space safely, and get through your first ordinary day without turning everything into an emergency. We’ll also build a first-night path, so the things you need most don’t disappear into the move. That means thinking ahead about your sleeping setup, bathroom basics, lighting, charging, water, food, medication or other essentials, and whatever you’ll need the next morning. But this episode is just as much about what not to decide yet. You do not need to know exactly where every piece of furniture belongs. You do not need to mount the television immediately. You do not need to decide which room will permanently become your office before you have ever worked there. You do not need to organize every cabinet according to the way your last home worked. Some decisions benefit from an empty room. Others benefit from living. So we’ll separate your move into two simple categories: DO NOW — the things that are necessary, already decided, or dramatically easier while the house is empty. LEARN LATER — the things your actual routines, habits, light, movement, comfort, and behavior can help you decide once you are living there. That distinction can keep moving in from becoming one enormous deadline. Because the goal is not to finish your home as quickly as possible. The goal is to create a useful starting point and give the home enough time to show you how you actually want to live in it. Listen to this episode while you’re packing, cleaning, painting, measuring, planning, waiting for the keys, or standing in the new house trying to figure out what should happen first.
