[…] In 1802, Georgia was much larger. It stretched from the ocean to the Mississippi River. The federal government bought the land that would later become Alabama and Mississippi for $1.25 million. This is all the result of the Yazoo land fraud, and that's another story. The compact specifically requires the Jefferson administration to extinguish Native American land titles at federal expense. It doesn't mention relocation and doesn't have a time frame. The federal government was supposed to end all claims the Cherokee had on the land through purchase or treaty, and it was supposed to do it as early as can peaceably obtained on reasonable terms.
