Film and TV analysis from inside the process. Comics, Star Trek, superheroes and the genre work everybody watches and nobody reads closely enough - argued from twenty-two years spent in advertising and production, lighting scenes, fixing bad takes and cutting shots that killed the pacing. Clayface ending explained
Last week Mr. Know-It-All pinned five predictions about Clayface to a corkboard on camera, with a Watch For column and a This Breaks It column beside them. Now the movie is out, and this is the full spoiler discussion: the whole film, the ending, the last scene, graded pin by pin against what Matt Hagen actually does on screen. One of those cards gets stamped wrong, on the record, and the video opens on which one.
Every Watch For card is checked against the movie: whether Clayface has its own Roland Daggett, whether Dr. Caitlyn Corr (Naomi Ackie) believes in Hagen before the treatment works, the clock on the nanite cure, and the first face Hagen steals. Then the column that could have killed it: Batman, the hero beat, and the one-time cure with no cost. The Batman question from Wednesday's review gets its answer up front.
The last pin is the one that explains the rest: did Clayface earn Matt Hagen your investment on his own? Tom Rhys Harries, the Leavesden stages, the Darkman shape of the fall, and what James Watkins and Mike Flanagan's script does with the famous thing in its final two minutes. The Know-It-All Index number from Wednesday is revisited at the end, knowing everything.

Ultron's Best Advice Is the Trap #visionquest
VisionQuest Review
For two episodes of VisionQuest, the best parent in the house is Ultron. Every time Vision gets stuck with Tommy, Ultron has the answer, and Mr. Know-It-All thinks that is exactly the problem.
Episodes 3 and 4 of VisionQuest finally let Vision sound like himself, give Friday a wonderful moment, and start naming the real people behind Tony Stark's AIs, then reach all the way back to Phineas Horton and Jim Hammond, the original Human Torch from Marvel Comics #1. Plus a Terry Matalas cameo you may have missed.
Then there is Jocasta. VisionQuest has her collecting something, and Mr. Know-It-All has a theory about what it opens. Watch, then tell him in the comments whether it holds up or it's flimsy.

Clayface Just Made Darkman a DC Movie #clayface
Clayface Review (No Spoilers)
Clayface is not a horror movie, and that might be the best thing that could have happened to it. DC Studios and James Gunn have been selling James Watkins' Clayface as a true horror film for months, but what plays on screen is something else: Darkman, made into a DC movie. I brought Mrs. Know-It-All and Grandpa Know-It-All, my horror people, and the three of us walked out with a very different read than the marketing promised.
Tom Rhys Harries plays Matt Hagen, an actor on the rise until the mob takes his face, and Naomi Ackie plays Dr. Caitlyn Corr, the doctor with a treatment that can rebuild it. If you know Sam Raimi's Darkman with Liam Neeson, you already know this setup, but Clayface does it its own way, and the way it handles Ackie's Corr is the most interesting thing it does with its own marketing.
Then the producer in me: Liverpool standing in for Gotham City on the same waterfront Matt Reeves used for The Batman, the Clayface airplane scene from the trailers, why there is no big set piece, and where Clayface sits next to The Penguin, Peacemaker and Creature Commandos in the DCU. The full spoiler discussion, with the corkboard graded pin by pin, goes up Friday.
