About Mr Murugan and Ms Fong

One is Mr Murugan. He talks a little too much, thinks out loud and occasionally says something profound before realising it himself. The other is Ms Fong. She says less, observes more and has the uncomfortable habit of being right before the rest of us catch up. Together, they explore Eastern wisdom, spirituality, science, health, happiness, ageing and the human condition – with some detours along the way. Just two people, one conversation and the kind of insight that slips in quietly between sips of coffee. Bring your own coffee. Wisdom. Reflection. Connection.

The System Wants You to Buy and Throw!

Fixing something you already own has quietly become one of the more subversive things you can do.In 2022 the world generated 62 million tonnes of electronic waste — up 82% since 2010. Only 22.3% of it was formally collected and recycled. The rest disappeared into the system, taking about 62 billion US dollars of recoverable gold, copper and other materials with it.This episode is about why repair became difficult on purpose, and the new EU law that is starting to make it a right.IN THIS EPISODE Why the fastest way to "fix" something became buying a new one Glued-in batteries, proprietary screws, and software that refuses to recognise a part it didn't sell you The EU's Right to Repair Directive — what it actually obliges manufacturers to do Why learning to fix one thing changes how you see everything else you own THE NUMBERS, AND THE YEAR THEY COME FROMAll the e-waste figures above are from the UN's Global E-waste Monitor 2024, which reports on 2022 — the most recent full year in the dataset. The same report projects 82 million tonnes a year by 2030.Worth noting what "22.3%" means: it is the share documented as formally collected and properly recycled. Some of the remainder is handled informally rather than simply dumped, but it sits outside any system that can be measured or made safe.WHAT THE EU DIRECTIVE ACTUALLY DOESDirective (EU) 2024/1799 was published in July 2024, and member states had until 31 July 2026 to put it into national law and begin applying it.Three things it requires. Manufacturers must offer timely, cost-effective repair of products on a specific covered list — phones, tablets, washing machines, dishwashers, refrigerators, electronic displays and others — and keep spare parts and tools available at a reasonable price. Anyone who chooses repair over replacement under warranty gets at least a further year of legal guarantee, and that part applies to consumer goods generally. And manufacturers may not impede repair through contractual clauses, hardware or software techniques, including blocking independent repairers from using 3D-printed spare parts. The honest caveat: a directive is not a switch. By the deadline only a handful of member states had formally notified their national laws, and the Commission opened infringement proceedings against 18 countries in September. The right exists. Whether it works where you live depends on your government, and "reasonable price" has not yet been defined by anybody. And this is EU law. If you are outside the EU it doesn't cover you directly — though manufacturers rarely build two versions of the same product.SOURCESUNITAR / ITU — The Global E-waste Monitor 2024: https://unitar.org/about/news-stories... Why the First Reaction Is Almost Always Wrong

IN THIS EPISODE - Why one word changes how far apost travels, and why truth has nothing to do with it - The MIT study that tracked adecade of news on Twitter and found falsehood consistently outrunning fact - Outrage's three-for-one deal:engagement, identity, certainty — none of which a calm, accurate take can offeryou - Why a headline can make you angryin half a second, before you've finished reading it - The three-second tell THE RESEARCH, AND WHERE WESIMPLIFIED IT We'd rather state the limitsourselves than have them found in the comments. The 20% figure comes from Bradyet al. (2017), which analysed 563,312 tweets about gun control, same-sexmarriage and climate change. Each additional moral-emotionalword in a tweet was linked to roughly 20% more retweets. Three things the episode doesn'thave time to say: First, and most interesting — the effect was concentratedinside ideologically like-minded networks. Moral-emotional language spreadstrongly among people who already agreed, and much more weakly across to theother side. Outrage isn't a universal accelerant. It's a tribal one. That reframes the whole thing: itmay not be winning arguments so much as hardening the groups already holdingthem. Second, the study compared tweetsthat already existed rather than adding words experimentally, so it shows anassociation, not proof that the word caused the sharing. It also made noassessment of whether any of the tweets were true. Third, a 2025 pre-registeredreplication found a similar but slightly smaller average effect, around 17%, anda separate paper — "Reconsidering Evidence of Moral Contagion in OnlineSocial Networks" — has challenged the original methodology. The direction of the finding holdsup. The precise size is still being argued about. On the MIT figures: Vosoughi,Roy and Aral (2018) analysed roughly 126,000 stories shared by about 3 millionpeople between 2006 and 2017. Falsehood was about 70% more likelyto be retweeted; the "six times faster" figure specifically meanstruth took around six times as long as falsehood to reach 1,500 people. That data describes Twitter as itwas over that decade — the platform has been renamed and substantially rebuiltsince. And one clarification on the closing segment: the research cited is fromthe Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism at Oxford, which iseditorially independent of Reuters the news agency. Its 2025 Digital News Report foundthat 58% of respondents worldwide say they are worried about what is real andfake online when it comes to news. I Won't Let You Earn More Than Me

Here's a question that sounds simple, and isn't. Would you rather earn $50,000 a year while everyone aroundyou earns $25,000 — or earn $100,000, while everyone around you earns $200,000? Roughly half the people asked chose the first. They chose tobe poorer, in absolute terms, for the rest of their lives, as long as it meantbeing ahead of the people around them. IN THIS EPISODE - The 1998 Solnick and Hemenway study, and why the answerpeople give out loud isn't the answer most of them pick - Social comparison — why we measure our worth againstwhoever's nearby rather than any fixed standard - Why a modest raise feels brilliant until you find out whatyour colleague got - The Easterlin Paradox: economies getting richer fordecades while average happiness barely moves - Why envy isn't a character flaw you can fix with a biggernumber - What actually helps, when money can't ABOUT THAT STUDY In February 1995, 257 faculty, students and staff at theHarvard School of Public Health answered a survey on what economists callpositional concerns. About half preferred the world with half the realpurchasing power, so long as their relative position was high. Worth being precise: that's 257 people at one school, not anational sample. But the pattern has held up across repeated versions of theexperiment in other countries since. One more finding from the same survey that didn't fit infour minutes — the effect was far stronger for looks than for money. Around 75percent were positional about their own attractiveness. We'd rather be thebest-looking person in a worse-looking world than a better-looking person in aworld of beautiful people. The authors noted the survey became the talk of the school. It does that. Weekend Was Invented By Drunk People

The weekend feels like a law of physics. Two days off, every week, forever. It isn't. It's younger than the lightbulb, and it was a live argument for more than a century — fought over by drunks, factory owners, unions, church leaders and one car manufacturer who liked the math.IN THIS EPISODE- Why one day off a week was the deal for most of human history — and why it was for worship, not rest- "Saint Monday" — the unofficial hangover holiday 19th-century British workers took, and the compromise it forced- The Saturday half-holiday: the direct ancestor of your weekend- The ILO's first convention in 1919 — eight-hour day, 48-hour week, still six days of work- Ford in 1926, and why giving workers two days off was partly a plan to sell them cars- Why the two-day weekend still isn't universal todayON THE 1879 DATEThe word "weekend" turns up in the Oxford English Dictionary much earlier than 1879 — there's a 1638 citation meaning simply the end of the week. What 1879 marks is the first printed description of the thing itself: a Notes and Queries entry describing how someone in Staffordshire would leave after Saturday afternoon's work to spend Saturday evening and Sunday with friends. The word existed. The weekend didn't.TWO THINGS THAT DIDN'T FITThe first American move came in 1908, when a New England employer gave a two-day weekend so Jewish workers could observe their Sabbath — and Christian workers asked for the same. And in 1929, the Amalgamated Clothing Workers of America became the first union to demand and win a five-day week outright. The legal end of the story is less tidy than it sounds. The 1938 Fair Labor Standards Act capped the week at 44 hours, then stepped it down to 42, then 40 — which only took effect on 24 October 1940. Sixty-one years after that 1879 description.TIMESTAMPS0:00 The word that's younger than the lightbulb0:39 The Sabbath, Saint Monday, and the Saturday half-holiday1:37 The ILO, Henry Ford, and the law catching up2:36 Why the weekend still isn't the same everywhere3:21 ClosingSOURCES & FURTHER READINGWitold Rybczynski — Waiting for the Weekend, and his 1991 Atlantic essay, the source most of this history traces back toInternational Labour Organization — Hours of Work (Industry) Convention, 1919 (No. 1)History.com — Why We Work 5 Days a Week: https://www.history.com/articles/five-day-work-week-labor-movementOxford English Dictionary — entries for "weekend" and "weekender"ABOUT THIS CHANNELMr Murugan & Ms Fong. They Need More Than Food

Your pet has been trying to talk to you. Not with words. With every pace across the floor, every toy ignored, every time they stare at you a little too long.We fill the bowl. We book the vet. We buy the bed they never use. But the thing they actually need is attention to what they're feeling — and most of the time, we miss it completely.BEFORE ANYTHING ELSE: SEE A VETSome of the signals in this episode can be medical, not emotional — and the difference matters. If your cat suddenly stops using the litter box, especially if they're straining, crying, or producing little or no urine, treat it as an emergency. Urinary blockage, particularly in male cats, can be fatal within a day or two without treatment. Feather plucking in birds and sudden behaviour changes in dogs can also have physical causes.Rule out pain and illness first. Once a vet has done that, the emotional reading in this episode becomes the right lens.IN THIS EPISODE The quieter signals — the ones that look like misbehaviour but are actually communication Why a dog chewing furniture is usually boredom it can't manage silently The Oregon State research showing cats form secure attachments to their owners at almost exactly the rate human infants do Apartments, long working days and hours of silence: cities built for human efficiency, not for the animals we brought into them What to watch for in dogs, cats and birds — and the first question to ask when something changes Why ten focused minutes of play beats an hour of distracted half-attention THE CAT STUDYKristyn Vitale, Alexandra Behnke and Monique Udell at Oregon State University adapted the attachment test used on human infants. Around 64% of kittens and 66% of adult cats were securely attached to their owners — almost exactly the 65% seen in human babies. Cats aren't aloof. They're selective. Scientists Counted The Birds. The Number Made People Cry

Murugan downloaded a bird identification app. Forty minutes later he was still on the balcony, phone held up, not moving. Then Ms Fong looked into why so many people had done the same thing — and stopped smiling.North America has lost close to three billion breeding birds since 1970. Quietly, while everyone was looking at other things. This episode is about what birdwatching has accidentally become: the largest act of collective noticing in human history, arriving exactly when it was needed.IN THIS EPISODE- The 2019 Science study: a net loss of 2.9 billion birds across North America, a 29% reduction since 1970- Europe's parallel figure: around 600 million breeding birds lost across the EU and UK since 1980, including sparrows, starlings and larks- Sentinel species — why declining birds mean declining insects, which mean declining plants, which mean a whole web under pressure- eBird, the Cornell Lab's citizen science database, now past two billion observations — and what it means that ordinary people on ordinary mornings built the largest biodiversity dataset ever assembled- Shifting baseline syndrome, described by marine biologist Daniel Pauly in 1995 — each generation accepting a diminished world as normal- Research from the University of Exeter in BioScience: people in neighbourhoods with more birds report lower rates of depression, anxiety and stressTHE NUMBER THAT SAYS THE MOSTeBird took nineteen years to reach its first billion observations. It took four years to reach the second. Two billion sightings now, from 150 million checklists submitted by 1.1 million people across 253 countries.People are not just noticing more. Wetland birds actually recovered over the same period, largely thanks to conservation funded by waterfowl hunters. 15-Minute Boredom Trick To Make You Creative

A person is alone with their own mind for twelve seconds and immediately reaches for a phone, as though they had been abandoned in a forest. No danger. No emergency. Just a queue, a waiting room, a lift that takes slightly too long.We have built an entire civilisation around avoiding one awkward pause. Mr Murugan and Ms Fong on what that pause was actually doing, and what it costs to keep deleting it.IN THIS EPISODE Boredom as a signal, not a defect — the psychological case that it flags a situation no longer offering enough meaning, challenge or purpose "Boredom is not the absence of intelligence. It is intelligence complaining politely." What the mind does when nothing is entertaining it — recalling, imagining, connecting things that looked unrelated five minutes ago The phone directory study, and why the mind has to be underwhelmed before it becomes original The honest limits: some boredom is deadening, some is loneliness in a boring hat One thing to try — leave a single gap in the day unfilled, and don't optimise it THE STUDY, PROPERLY DESCRIBEDSandi Mann and Rebekah Cadman at the University of Central Lancashire ran two experiments. In the first, 80 participants either copied names and numbers from a telephone directory or did nothing boring at all, then took a standard creativity test — coming up with uses for two polystyrene cups. The bored group produced more ideas, and more unusual ones. The second experiment is the stranger result. They added a condition that was even more boring — reading the numbers out rather than writing them down — and that group was more creative still. The duller the task, the better the creative performance that followed. Daydreaming appears to be what connects the two.Worth keeping in proportion: 80 and 90 participants, one research group. Ancient India Found 107 Points On Your Body That Can Kill You

Cut a body open and you find muscle, bone and blood. That's the anatomy your doctor learned. But across Asia, entire civilizations built completely different maps of the human body – maps with no muscles marked on them at all. In India, points called marma. In China, channels called meridians. In Daoist thought, an inner furnace for refining life itself.Three separate traditions. Three completely different toolkits. And all of them arrived at the same refusal: the body is not just meat.IN THIS EPISODE Marma — the 107 vital points catalogued in the Sushruta Samhita, at junctions where muscle, vein, ligament, bone and joint converge. Knowledge of them was described as half the science of surgery Meridians (经络) — the channels along which qi (气) is said to flow, and the 2010 UNESCO inscription that recognised the whole framework rather than one technique Neidan (內丹) — Daoist inner alchemy, which grew out of external alchemy after the search for literal immortality elixirs failed, and turned the body itself into the furnace Jing, qi and shen (精, 气, 神) — essence, vital energy and spirit — refined through centres called dantian (丹田) Where modern anatomy quietly agrees with the premise: referred pain, the enteric nervous system, fascia networks that ignore textbook muscle boundaries ONE DETAIL THAT DIDN'T FIT IN THE EPISODEThe marma count has stayed at 107 since the Sushruta Samhita — essentially unchanged for two thousand years. The Chinese acupoint count went the other way entirely: 277 in the Huangdi Neijing, 649 by the A-B Classic of Acupuncture and Moxibustion, and 718 in the modern national standard. One map was treated as complete. The other was treated as a work in progress. That difference says as much about the two traditions as the maps themselves do.TIMESTAMPS0:00 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8QN3BvjA2rU) Three maps, no muscles marked0:52 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8QN3BvjA2rU&t=52s) Marma and meridians, precisely explained2:16 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8QN3BvjA2rU&t=136s) Daoist inner alchemy and the body as furnace2:56 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8QN3BvjA2rU&t=176s) Three things to carry4:08 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8QN3BvjA2rU&t=248s) ClosingTHREE THINGS TO CARRY1. Modern medicine agrees with the premise even where it rejects the maps. Contemporary anatomy keeps finding the body more interconnected than a diagram of separate organs suggests.2. Respect, not magical thinking. Centuries of careful embodied observation went into these systems. That's worth taking seriously without needing every claim to be literally true.3. Pay attention to your own non-anatomical body. The tight place that isn't a named muscle. The dip in energy at the same hour every day. These three traditions simply spent centuries writing that experience down.SOURCES & FURTHER READINGUNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage — Acupuncture and moxibustion of traditional Chinese medicine (inscribed 2010): https://ich.unesco.org/en/RL/acupunct... Do Binaural Beats Actually Work?

There is a sound your ears never actually receive — but your brain builds it anyway.Put one tone in the left ear. Put a slightly different tone in the right ear. Your brain doesn't hear two sounds. It constructs a third rhythm out of the difference between them. That's a binaural beat. And the internet took this small auditory illusion and turned it into a productivity religion. In this episode, Mr Murugan and Miss Fong separate the real phenomenon from the marketing.IN THIS EPISODE How binaural beats actually work — 300 Hz in one ear, 310 Hz in the other, and a 10 Hz beat that exists nowhere in the room The brainwave bands everyone cites — delta, theta, alpha, beta — and what they do and don't tell you Why the "brainwave entrainment" claim is far shakier than the wellness industry admits Whether the benefit is the beat, the ritual, the quiet room, or simply the absence of interruption How to try them sensibly: headphones, comfortable volume, ten to twenty minutes, a clear purpose WHAT THE RESEARCH ACTUALLY SAYSA 2019 meta-analysis of 22 studies found a medium overall effect on memory, attention, anxiety and pain perception, with longer listening sessions performing better than short ones. But a 2023 systematic review of studies measuring actual brain activity found five studies supporting the entrainment hypothesis, eight contradicting it, and one mixed. In other words: something is happening for some people, but the popular explanation of why is not well established.Interesting. Mixed. Worth trying. Not a miracle.TIMESTAMPS0:00 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iIvHtaYTaoM) The sound your ears never hear0:53 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iIvHtaYTaoM&t=53s) How binaural beats work — and what "gently" means2:09 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iIvHtaYTaoM&t=129s) Is it the beat, the ritual, or the quiet?3:09 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iIvHtaYTaoM&t=189s) How to use them sensibly4:20 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iIvHtaYTaoM&t=260s) ClosingIF YOU WANT TO TRY THEMUse headphones — the effect requires a different tone in each ear and does not survive a speaker.Keep the volume comfortable. When did you last notice the weather?

When did you last notice the weather – not check it on an app, but actually notice it?The quality of light. The direction of the wind. Whether the air smelled different. Most people cannot answer. Not because they are unobservant, but because they have outsourced their senses to a screen.Mr Murugan and Ms Fong on attention as a cognitive skill – one you were born with, and one that atrophies without use.IN THIS EPISODE Attention Restoration Theory — Stephen and Rachel Kaplan's decades of work at the University of Michigan Why directed attention (screens, decisions, deadlines) is a finite resource that depletes Why involuntary attention (birdsong, moving water, shifting light) restores it What the birdsong research actually found — and what it didn't Michael Merzenich on neuroplasticity: the brain rewires around whatever you repeatedly give it One practice that costs nothing: name three things you can sense right now, without looking for them TIMESTAMPS0:00 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bp_jBKAxFqQ) You outsourced your senses to a screen1:01 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bp_jBKAxFqQ&t=61s) Attention restoration, the Kaplans, and a backlit leaf2:22 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bp_jBKAxFqQ&t=142s) Murugan confesses: I noticed my notifications3:30 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bp_jBKAxFqQ&t=210s) Name three things you can sense right now4:19 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bp_jBKAxFqQ&t=259s) Traffic. A fan. And something that might be a bird.THE RESEARCH, PROPERLY CITEDTwo separate 2022 studies in Scientific Reports are referenced in this episode, and they found different things:Stobbe et al. exposed 295 participants to six minutes of either traffic noise or birdsong. Anxiety and paranoia dropped significantly in both birdsong conditions. Notably, no effect was found on cognitive performance — the benefit was to mood, not to thinking speed.Hammoud et al. used a smartphone app to collect 26,856 real-time reports from 1,292 people. Everyday encounters with birdlife were linked to improvements in mental wellbeing that lasted for hours afterwards, in healthy participants and in people diagnosed with depression alike. The "lasting hours" finding belongs to the second study, not the first. Both are worth reading.SOURCESKaplan, S. — The restorative benefits of nature: toward an integrative framework, Journal of Environmental Psychology, 1995Kaplan, R. & Kaplan, S. — The Experience of Nature, Cambridge University Press, 1989Hunter, M.R. et al. — Urban Nature Experiences Reduce Stress in the Context of Daily Life Based on Salivary Biomarkers, Frontiers in Psychology, 2019Stobbe, E. et al. — Birdsongs alleviate anxiety and paranoia in healthy participants, Scientific Reports, 2022: https://www.nature.com/articles/s4159...
