Carroll A. Deering: A Stranger Hailed the Lightship. 11 Men Were Never Seen Again
A stranger hailed the lightship. Eleven men were never seen again. On January 31, 1921, a Coast Guard surfman on beach patrol at Cape Hatteras sighted a five-masted schooner hard aground on Diamond Shoals, about a mile offshore, with all her sails set. She was the Carroll A. Deering, built at Bath, Maine in 1919 and not yet two years old. For four days the sea was too heavy to reach her. When surfmen finally boarded, they found food and coffee left out in the galley, a bed slept in, three pairs of boots on the cabin floor, and a cat alive. The ship's log, charts, navigation instruments, papers and both lifeboats were gone. So were all eleven men.Her master was Willis Wormell, 66 years old and out of retirement, taking his first command of the Deering after Captain William Merritt fell ill and left the ship. Wormell's eyesight was failing, so navigation fell to first mate Charles McLellan, the man he trusted least. In Barbados, McLellan was overheard threatening to kill the captain before they reached Norfolk. He was arrested. Wormell paid to have him released, and the two sailed north together on January 9.Wormell's handwriting on the ship's chart stops on January 23. After that the position marks continue in another hand.Days later the Deering passed the Cape Lookout Lightship. A man hailed keeper Captain Thomas Jacobson through a megaphone, reporting lost anchors and asking that the owners be notified. Jacobson said the man did not look, act or speak like the ship's master. He was thin, red-haired, with a foreign accent. Behind him, the crew were standing on the quarterdeck, where ordinary hands did not stand. The lightship's radio was out of order. In April, a fisherman named Christopher Columbus Gray produced a bottled note near Buxton claiming the crew had been taken. Handwriting experts attributed it to the ship's engineer, Herbert Bates. Wormell's daughter, Lula, took the case to Senator Frederick Hale of Maine, who took it to Secretary of Commerce Herbert Hoover. Five federal departments and the Bureau of Investigation opened files on one missing schooner. The note turned out to be a forgery. No trace of the eleven men has been found in a hundred and five years. The wreck was dynamited on March 4, 1921. Her timbers came ashore on Hatteras Island and were built into houses that still stand.

Three Keepers Gone From an Island Twenty Miles Out. One Broken Rule. Never Found
The Flannan Isles lighthouse disappearance. Twenty years of service, one broken rule, and three keepers gone from an island twenty miles out. Never found. On December 15, 1900, three lighthouse keepers vanished from Eilean Mòr in the Flannan Isles, twenty miles off the Isle of Lewis in the Outer Hebrides, Scotland. James Ducat, the Principal Keeper, was 43 years old with more than twenty years in the Northern Lighthouse Board service, married with four children living at the shore station in Breasclete. Thomas Marshall was Second Assistant. Donald McArthur was an Occasional Keeper, standing in for William Ross, who was on sick leave. A fourth keeper, Joseph Moore, was ashore on rotation and was the first man to walk into the empty station. The last entries were routine weather readings taken on the morning of December 15. That night the steamer Archtor, en route from Philadelphia to Leith, passed the islands and saw no light. The report took days to reach Edinburgh. The relief vessel Hesperus, under Captain Jim Harvie, did not arrive until Boxing Day, December 26 — eleven nights after the light went dark.Moore found the gate shut, the door shut, the beds unmade and the clock stopped. There was no damage and nothing out of place. The kitchen had been cleaned.Superintendent Robert Muirhead of the Northern Lighthouse Board arrived on December 29. He had personally recruited all three men. At the West Landing he documented a storage box smashed open more than a hundred feet above the sea, iron railings set in concrete torn from their sockets, and a block of stone weighing roughly a ton displaced from its bed. Two sets of oilskins were gone from the station. One was still hanging on its peg. Muirhead ruled out wind and concluded the men had been swept away by an exceptional sea. Most of what is repeated about this case is not in the historical record. The untouched meal and the overturned chair come from Wilfrid Wilson Gibson's 1912 ballad "Flannan Isle." The famous logbook entries describing storms, weeping and prayer were written by Ernest Fallon for the pulp magazine True Strange Stories in the late 1920s, nearly thirty years after the disappearance. No such log exists. No bodies were ever recovered. A memorial to James Ducat, Thomas Marsha

She Never Came Home. Her Ring Did. Trenny Gibson Has Never Been Found.
She never came home. Her ring did.On October 8th, 1976, sixteen-year-old Trenny Lynn Gibson boarded a school bus in Knoxville, Tennessee with her horticulture class for a field trip to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Her teacher, Wayne Dunlap, didn't tell the students where they were going until they were already moving.By two-fifty that afternoon, classmates watched Trenny crouch on the right side of the Forney Ridge Trail — as if she was looking at something on the ground — and step off into dense undergrowth. A classmate called out. No response. A male student came up the trail moments later. He hadn't seen her either. They assumed she had continued toward the bus. She had not.Trenny Gibson was never seen again. But weeks later, classmates at Bearden High School in Knoxville began noticing something wrong. A star sapphire ring — the one Trenny had been wearing when she stepped off that trail — had appeared on someone else's hand. And her plastic hair comb, something her family and classmates knew she never left behind, was reportedly found inside a male classmate's vehicle. A classmate who had been on that trail that day. A classmate who had lent her his jacket that morning. When questioned, he said he had purchased the ring at a market. The explanation changed over time. As for the comb — he said Trenny had asked him to hold it. Police were informed. Investigators looked at Robert Simpson. No items were officially seized as evidence. No charges were ever filed. The tracking dogs that searched for Trenny Gibson picked up her scent — not in the woods near Andrews Bald where she disappeared, but at the top of the Clingmans Dome observation tower, more than a mile away. The scent then followed the road north for one point six miles to a place called Collins Gap, where searchers found cigarette butts matching the brand found at the exact spot where Trenny had stepped off the trail. Then the dogs reached the asphalt. And stopped.Trenny Gibson's bank account was never touched. Her belongings remained at home. There is no record of any plan for her disappearance. She had not known where the field trip was going until she was already on the bus.Someone came down from those mountains with Trenny Gibson's ring. Someone came down with her comb. Trenny Gibson did not.

Frederick Valentich: 17 Seconds That No One Can Explain
On the evening of 21 October 1978, a 20-year-old pilot named Frederick Valentich took off from Moorabbin Airport outside Melbourne in a Cessna 182L, registration VH-DSJ, bound for King Island across Bass Strait. At six minutes past seven he radioed Melbourne Flight Service to ask whether there was any known traffic below five thousand feet. There was not. Over the next six minutes he described an aircraft above him that he could not identify — four bright lights, a long shape moving at speeds he could not judge, a green light, a metallic surface. He told the controller it was orbiting above his aircraft. His last words were: it is hovering, and it's not an aircraft. The final entry in the official transcript is not a sentence. It is a notation: seventeen seconds of open microphone. No wreckage was ever found. No debris field. No body. Not one of the four life jackets he carried on board.

A Boy Was Seen on an Unreachable Ledge. Then Pulled Back. Alfred Beilhartz Was Never Found
In July 1938, four-year-old Alfred Beilhartz vanished while hiking with his family along Fall River in Rocky Mountain National Park, Colorado. What happened to Alfred Beilhartz next has never been explained.A day after Alfred Beilhartz disappeared, six miles from Fall River and nearly 3,000 feet higher in elevation, two hikers on Old Fall River Road looked up at a remote rock formation on Mount Chapin called Devil's Nest — and saw a small boy sitting on the edge of the ledge. He was there for several minutes. Then a hand reached out from the shadows beside him and pulled him out of sight.Rangers reached Devil's Nest within a day. There was no trail connecting it to where Alfred vanished, and no sign that a child — or anyone — had ever been there. This is the full story of the Alfred Beilhartz disappearance: the search that grew to 150 men and Civilian Conservation Corps crews, the bloodhounds that lost his scent 500 feet up a fork in the trail, the sighting at Devil's Nest, the bandage found months later in an abandoned cabin, and the question that's followed this Rocky Mountain National Park missing persons case for 88 years.

He Walked Out of His Visitor Center in Uniform. The Only Ranger to Vanish on Duty. Paul Fugate.
He walked out of his visitor center in uniform on January 13, 1980 — and was never seen again. Paul Fugate was a National Park Service ranger at Chiricahua National Monument in southeastern Arizona. His keys were on the desk. His wallet. His gun collection. Three vehicles sat outside untouched. The only things missing were Paul, his uniform, his monument keys, and a new down coat.Ground teams, trackers, search dogs, and aircraft searched the terrain for days. They found nothing. No footprint leaving the path. No scent trail. No torn thread of uniform on the brush. The dogs gave them nothing to follow.Paul Fugate is the only National Park Service ranger to ever disappear on duty and never be found. A $60,000 reward — one of the largest ever offered by the NPS — remains unclaimed. The case is still open.Three theories have been investigated: an accident that left no trace, a crime that left no evidence, and a voluntary disappearance that left everything behind. None of them explains the keys on the desk.Chiricahua National Monument sits in Cochise County, southeastern Arizona — 12,000 acres of volcanic rock spires and canyon labyrinth, 30 miles from the US-Mexico border. Paul Fugate knew every trail. He had spent years building the guides that told other people how to walk them.If you have information about the disappearance of Paul Fugate, contact the NPS Investigative Services Branch. The reward is $60,000 and the case remains open after more than 40 years.📚 Case files on strange national park disappearances (affiliate link — supports the channel at no cost to you):National Park Encounters: Case Files of the Strange & Mysterieshttps://amzn.to/4w0zk5aMr. Nocturna covers unsolved disappearances, unexplained missing persons cases, true crime mysteries, and cold cases that have never been fully explained.Subscribe: https://www.youtube.com/@mr.nocturna?sub_confirmation=1

Her Father Watched Her Walk Away. 8,000 Man-Hours Found One Camera Lens. Never Found. Stacy Arras.
On July 17, 1981, a fourteen-year-old girl named Stacy Arras rode into the Yosemite high country with her father as part of a guided mule trip to Sunrise High Sierra Camp. The camp sits at 9,400 feet in one of the most remote sections of Yosemite National Park — granite slabs, sparse pines, and open alpine terrain stretching in every direction. After arriving at camp, Stacy told her father she wanted to walk toward the nearby lake to take photographs. A seventy-seven-year-old man from the same group, Gerald Stuart, decided to accompany her. He became winded and sat down on a boulder to rest while Stacy continued walking — roughly fifty yards ahead of him — toward a tree line at the edge of the granite slope. He watched her walk into the trees. That was the last time anyone ever saw Stacy Arras. What followed was one of the largest search and rescue operations in the history of Yosemite National Park. One hundred fifty searchers, including sixty-seven Mountain Rescue Association volunteers, six search dog teams, divers, and three helicopters covering more than forty hours of aerial search time. Over nine days and eight thousand man-hours, teams covered three to five square miles surrounding the spot where Stacy was last seen. They found one thing. Part of her camera, lying just inside the tree line — exactly where she had been walking. No footprints leading further. No drag marks. No scent trail for the dogs to follow — not even a few yards from her last known position. No signs of a struggle. No evidence of predator activity. No clothing. No remains. Nothing.Every conventional explanation for Stacy's disappearance fails against the physical evidence. A fall into the terrain would have left remains — the area was searched exhaustively by divers and ground teams. An animal attack would have left blood, drag marks, and disturbed ground — none were found. Voluntary disappearance is contradicted by the fact that Stacy initially put on sandals before her father stopped her and made her change into hiking boots — not the preparation of someone planning to walk away. The nearest road was miles away across open terrain, and Stacy has never been seen or heard from anywhere in the world in the forty-four years since she vanished. In 2011, thirty years after Stacy disappeared, researcher and former law enforcement officer David Paulides filed a Freedom of Information Act request with the National Park Service seeking the complete case file on her disappearance. The request was denied. Paulides appealed. In September of 2011, the Department of the Interior responded in writing, stating that the National Park Service's criminal investigation into the incident is still ongoing and that releasing the documents could reasonably be expected to interfere with enforcement proceedings. The case file on Stacy Arras contains nearly two thousand pages. A typical missing persons case from this era runs ten to one hundred pages. Of those nearly two thousand pages, only a small portion has ever been made public — primarily search and rescue logs released through the NPS FOIA reading room. The full investigative file remains withheld under FOIA Exemption 7A, which covers active law enforcement proceedings.Forty-four years later, her disappearance remains officially unsolved — and the government has never explained why a missing persons case from 1981 is still classified as an active criminal investigation.Mr. Nocturna covers impossible disappearances, unsolved cold cases, and the cases that refuse to close.
