   The Master Builder

   Old Testament Reading The Old Testament reading is Exodus chapter 35, verse 30, to Exodus 36, verse 7. And this is the inerrant and infallible and inspired word of God. Then Moses said to the people of Israel, “See, the Lord has called by name Bezalel the son of Uri, son of Hur, of the tribe of Judah, and he has filled him with the Spirit of God, with skill, with intelligence, with knowledge, and with all craftsmanship, to devise artistic designs, to work in gold and silver and bronze, in cutting stones for setting, and in carving wood, for work in every skilled craft. And he has inspired him to teach, both him and Oholiab the son of Ahisamach, of the tribe of Dan. He has filled them with skill to do every sort of work done by an engraver or by a designer or by an embroiderer in blue and purple and scarlet yarns and fine twined linen, or by a weaver, by any sort of workman or skilled designer. “Bezalel and Oholiab and every craftsman in whom the Lord has put skill and intelligence to know how to do any work in the construction of the sanctuary shall work in accordance with all that the Lord has commanded.” And Moses called Bezalel and Oholiab and every craftsman in whose mind the Lord had put skill, everyone whose heart stirred him up to come to do the work. And they received from Moses all the contribution that the people of Israel had brought for doing the work on the sanctuary. They still kept bringing him freewill offerings every morning, so that all the craftsmen who were doing every sort of task on the sanctuary came each from the task that he was doing, and said to Moses, “The people bring much more than enough for doing the work that the Lord commanded us to do.” So Moses gave command, and the word was proclaimed throughout the camp, “Let no man or woman do anything more for the contribution for the sanctuary.” So the people were restrained from bringing, for the material they had was sufficient to do all the work and more. New Testament Reading Keep your place there in Exodus. That’s our sermon text, and let’s turn to 1 Corinthians 12 for the New Testament reading: 1 Corinthians 12, verses 4 through 11. 1 Corinthians 12:4–11: “Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit; and there are varieties of service, but the same Lord; and there are varieties of activities, but it is the same God who empowers them all in everyone. To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good. For to one is given through the Spirit the utterance of wisdom, and to another the utterance of knowledge according to the same Spirit, to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit, to another the working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another the ability to distinguish between spirits, to another various kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues. All these are empowered by one and the same Spirit, who apportions to each one individually as he wills.” The grass withers, the flower fades, but the word of our God will stand forever. Introduction: God’s Grace in Exodus The passage that we looked at last week in Exodus was about, if you remember, the shining face of Moses. And so Moses, after he was in the presence of the Lord, his face would radiate something of the divine glory of God. And although that divine, holy light radiated, it inspired fear in the hearts of the Israelites. Nevertheless, at this point in Exodus, God’s basic disposition towards His people is not one of judgment or condemnation, but God’s basic disposition towards His people here is one of grace. As we’ve been going through the book of Exodus, we have learned the story of Israel’s disobedience, but of God’s mercy. The people broke the covenant. They broke the covenant that God made with them when they made and worshiped the golden calf. However, out of His amazing grace and mercy, the Lord took them back. He forgave them.    Moses’ Shining Face

   Old Testament Reading The Old Testament reading is Exodus chapter 34, verses 29 through 35. And this is God’s infallible and inspired and inerrant word. So let’s hear the word of God. When Moses came down from Mount Sinai, with the two tablets of the testimony in his hand as he came down from the mountain, Moses did not know that the skin of his face shone because he had been talking with God. Aaron and all the people of Israel saw Moses and behold, the skin of his face shone and they were afraid to come near him. But Moses called to them and Aaron and all the leaders of the congregation returned to him and Moses talked with them. Afterward, all the people of Israel came near and he commanded them, he commanded them all that the Lord had spoken with him in Mount Sinai. And when Moses had finished speaking with them, he put a veil over his face. Whenever Moses went in before the Lord to speak with him, he would remove the veil until he came out. And when he came out and told the people of Israel what was commanded, the people of Israel would see the face of Moses, that the skin of Moses’ face was shining. And Moses would put the veil over his face again until he went in to speak with him. New Testament Reading Our New Testament reading is 2 Corinthians, 2 Corinthians 3, verses 7-18. 2 Corinthians 3, verses 7 through 18. Now, if the ministry of death, carved in letters on stone, came with such glory that the Israelites could not gaze at Moses’ face because of its glory, which was being brought to an end, will not the ministry of the Spirit have even more glory? For if there was glory in the ministry of condemnation, the ministry of righteousness must far exceed its glory. Indeed, in this case, what once had glory has come to have no glory at all because of the glory that surpasses it. For if what was being brought to an end came with glory, much more will what is permanent have glory. Since we have such a hope, we are very bold, not like Moses who would put a veil over his face so that the Israelites might not gaze at the outcome of what was being brought to an end. But their minds were hardened, for to this day, when they read the old covenant, the same veil remains unlifted because only through Christ is it taken away. Yes, to this day, whenever Moses is read, a veil lies over their hearts. But when one turns to the Lord, the veil is removed. Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom. And we all with unveiled face, beholding the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another. For this comes from the Lord, who is the Spirit. The grass withers, the flower fades, but the word of our God will stand forever. Introduction Our sermon text is Exodus chapter 34, but you might want to keep your finger there in 2 Corinthians chapter 3, because we’ll be looking at that passage as well this morning. This morning we’ve come, in our study of Exodus, we’ve come to one of the more curious passages in Exodus, and that is the account of the shining face of Moses. And we cannot read this passage and not be filled with many questions about what is happening here. Why did the face of Moses shine the way that it did? Why did Moses put a veil over his face when it shined? And what does all of this mean? What did it mean for the people of Israel then? What does it mean for us as Christians today? Thankfully, as we look at this passage and as we seek to answer those questions, and we’ll be asking those questions today, thankfully we have in the New Testament an inspired commentary or interpretation to guide us along the way. And that is what the Apostle Paul wrote in 2 Corinthians 3. And so we’ll be looking at both of these passages this morning as we ask these questions of our text. Did the Face of Moses Shine? The first question we’ll ask is this: Why did the face of Moses shine? But before we answer that question, let’s as

   The Prophet’s Prayer

   Old Testament Reading and Prayer I will ask you to open your Bible with me to Habakkuk chapter 1, 1 to 14. This is our Old Testament reading and it’s also our sermon text for this morning. Let us pray and seek God’s blessing of his word. Almighty God, our Heavenly Father, You spoke long ago to our fathers by the prophets. In these last days, you have spoken to us by your son. We thank you that you have not led us in darkness, but have given us your word, a lamp to our feet and a light to our paths. As we come to the oracle that your servant Habakkuk saw, we confess that by ourselves we cannot rightly understand it. Our minds are dull, our hearts are easily distracted. So we pray with the psalmist, open my eyes that I may behold the wondrous things out of your law. Send your Holy Spirit to enlighten our minds and soften our hearts. Like Habakkuk, we live among violence, strife, and injustice, and we too are tempted to ask, how long, O Lord? Teach us through this passage to bring our burdens and perplexities honestly to you, trusting in your justice, your providence, and your promise. Strength your servant who brings your word. Help me to speak it faithfully and clearly. Hide me behind the cross, so that it is not the voice of man, but the voice of the shepherd who has heard. Let this word not return to you empty. By it, convict us of sin, comfort us in Christ, and lead us in a new obedience. For the glory of your name, we ask this in Jesus’ name, our Lord. Amen. The word from Habakkuk, chapter 1, verse 1 to 4. The oracle that Habakkuk the prophet saw. Oh Lord, how long shall I cry for help and you will not hear? I’ll cry to you violence and you will not save. Why do you make me see iniquity? Why do you idly look at wrong? destruction and violence are before me, strife and contention arise, so the law is paralyzed, and justice never goes forth, for the wicked surround the righteous, so justice goes forth perverted. New Testament Reading And the New Testament reading is from Romans chapter 1, verse 16 to 17. And now let’s turn to Romans chapter 1. For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jews first and also to the Greek. For in it, the righteousness of God is revealed from faith for faith. For it is written, the righteous shall live by faith. The grass withers, the flower fades, but the word of God will stand forever. Introduction to the Sermon Now we can turn back to Habakkuk chapter 1. Since the fall of Adam and Eve, all mankind has been under the wrath and curse of God. Yet out of his mere love, God offered us and saved us by giving his Son, Jesus Christ, and by granting faith and repentance unto life. He has also given us the ordinary means of grace, namely his word, the sacraments, and prayer. Through these, we can receive the benefits of Jesus Christ and his redemption. Prayer is a Christian duty, but sadly, it is also one of the most neglected. Many books have been written to teach us how to pray rightly and fruitfully, but the best teacher is always the Bible itself and the prayer God has recorded in it. So let me begin with a question. How is your prayer life? Do you pray? If you do, that is wonderful. But do you pray in the right way? And do you pray for the right things? And what should a Christian do in the midst of a chaotic and morally decaying society? Habakkuk helps to answer these questions. From this passage, I want to show you that Christians should pray to God earnestly and honestly, seeking Him on the basis of His promise and His law. We will consider these three points. First, Habakkuk prayed. Second, Habakkuk prayed in the right way. And third, Habakkuk prayed for the right things. Point 1: Habakkuk Prayed The first point Habakkuk prayed is from verse one to the first part of verse three.
