More Bike, Less Moped | What the MTB Report stands for — and what it doesn’t!
This line runs under every issue of the MTB Report. It isn’t a campaign against anybody. It’s the shortest possible version of why this magazine exists: because we want more people riding under their own power, and fewer people being carried.
What “moped” means here — and what it doesn’t
Start with what it doesn’t mean: eMTB. We cover electric mountain bikes, we ride them, and we think they’re one of the best things to happen to this sport. A motor puts people on trails they’d never have reached. It keeps riders in the sport who’d have quit after an injury. It turns a group ride back into something where the slowest person isn’t permanently parked at the trailhead waiting. That’s exactly where we want this to go.
“Moped” means something else. It means the point where a bike stops being a bike. When the software gets cranked so far that pedaling is a gesture. When somebody derestricts a system until it moves faster than it’s allowed to. When the competition between motor brands turns into a pure wattage race and nobody stops to ask how much power a bicycle actually needs.

Fire Hits Atherton Bikes: What We Know, and Why This Brand Matters
A fire tore through the Welsh factory of one of the most interesting bike brands on the planet. Nobody was hurt, but every delivery date is now up in the air.If you have ever watched Gee Atherton ride a ridgeline that most of us would hike down, you know the name. Gee took second at Red Bull Rampage in 2004 and silver again in 2010. On Sunday morning, the factory where he and his siblings build their own bikes caught fire. Here is what we actually know, minus the speculation.What happenedFirefighters were called to Atherton Bikes at the Treowain Business Park in Machynlleth, Wales, at around 8 a.m. local time on Sunday, October 11 (3 a.m. Eastern). Roughly 30 firefighters responded, with crews from Machynlleth, Aberystwyth and Llanidloes plus an aerial ladder platform and a water tanker from Oswestry across the English border. Residents were told to keep windows and doors shut, and police asked people to stay away.Nobody was injured. According to the fire service, speaking to the BBC, the fire started in the manufacturing area of the two-story building. Firefighters were able to save finished bikes and IT equipment. Specialized Invented the Light Enduro eMTB — Then Walked Away. Orbea’s Picking It Up.

The lightweight long-travel eMTB was Specialized’s idea. Now the brand has ceded it to Orbea, Mondraker, and a drone company. The reasons are less flattering than they sound.
There’s a bike riders have been asking about in the forums for months and nobody’s building it. A light enduro eMTB: serious travel for the descents, honestly under 20 kilos, a bike that rides like your regular trail bike but with a nudge of help on the climbs. Specialized invented that class. And Specialized walked away from it. Work out why, and you have to look past the glossy launch photos — that’s where it gets uncomfortable.
