Ep.72 From Escape to Empowerment: Building a Life of Freedom and Leadership

1/ Dima Ghawi was born in Turkey, raised in Jordan, and moved to the US in 1996.Her childhood gave her two opposing lessons:Community can hold you up.Culture can also push you down.2/ She grew up surrounded by family, grandparents, aunts, uncles, and the support of a village. But she was also taught to stay quiet, stay silent, and live without an identity. That tension shaped everything that came next.3/ In Jordan, Dima Ghawi was the “good daughter.”Great grades. Few activities. No freedom beyond studying. The rebel wasn’t born there. It was born in the US, when she saw people building lives around their own choices and dreams.4/ At 20, she married and moved to San Diego.By 24, she felt her life was over. She couldn’t have friends, leave home without permission, or talk to her mother for more than 15 minutes a week. Then came her first major act of rebellion:She escaped the marriage.5/ She rented an apartment for $850 a month in a frightening area.No furniture.Paper plates. Paper cups. Plastic spoons. But she had a job at Bank of America, and a place to start rebuilding.6/ The cost was enormous. Her family saw the escape as shame. She was disowned and faced death threats.Dima Ghawi hadn’t simply left a relationship. She was escaping the belief system she’d been programmed to accept.7/ The threats eventually extended to her mother and sister. They had to escape Jordan too.For a while, the three women measured safety in the simplest possible way:“1, 2, 3. As long as we have 3 bodies in this apartment, we’re good”.8/ Three years later, Dima Ghawi faced another choice.Stay in San Diego to protect her family, or accept a rare IBM opportunity reserved for 8 MBA graduates. She chose herself. That decision took her to New York, North Carolina, Japan, South Africa, and Louisiana.9/ Japan taught her the leadership lesson that changed everything. She arrived focused on goals, deadlines, and proving herself. Her team stopped attending meetings and responding to emails. An interpreter gave her the correction she needed:“The goal doesn’t go first. Knowing your team goes first” .10/ So Dima Ghawi changed her approach. She shared sake and sushi with her team. Climbed Mount Fuji with them. Learned about their families and challenges. Then performance improved.“It's not what you do, it's how you do it”.11/ Her leadership style now depends on the person in front of her. Some people need structure and close management.Others need trust and full delegation. The leader’s job isn’t to force one style. It’s to understand what helps each person do their best.12/ Dima Ghawi is now building a global leadership community for mid-level and aspiring leaders. Her premise is simple:Before leading others, learn to lead yourself. And after spending years fighting for a voice, she’s using hers to help others find theirs.

Ep.71 Building Homes and Hope: Brandon Craft on Real Estate, Foster Care, and Creating Lasting Impact

1/Meet Brandon Craft: builder, entrepreneur, foster parent, and founder of Honeycraft Farm. His journey is proof that business, family, and impact can all work in harmony.2/“I started our business at 22, 23 years old...there have been some tough times.” Brandon Craft on staying flexible, especially as a small home builder. Stability, he says, comes not from the house, but from how families operate inside it. 3/On building homes: Brandon Craft started with $400K properties he’d live in, then slowly grew to $1.5M–$3M custom homes. The evolution was “a slow progression”—not an overnight leap. 4/“The forever home is a myth.” Brandon Craft shares he’s moved 10+ times—the secret is staying mentally flexible (and yes, his friends have trouble keeping his address straight!).5/His advice to young people? Get your real estate license. “Whether you want to flip, build, or broker...learning how a real estate deal comes together is so valuable.” His own daughter is closing deals at 19! 6/His leadership style is hands-off and visionary: “My goal is to find really amazing people and let them do it within our organization in the way they want to.” Want to be entrepreneurial without starting from scratch? Grow with us. 7/How’d his real estate & interiors empire start? Out of necessity. Staging homes with store-bought furniture led to Craft Interiors, a furniture and design business—with “vertical integration” later becoming their secret weapon. 8/On personal growth: “Walking through open doors” ~ look for the next right thing, don’t force what isn’t ready. Brandon Craft credits faith, wise mentors, and patience for that peace of mind.9/Biggest lesson? Enjoy the ride. “There have been money issues and challenges—especially when the kids were young, I don’t know if I enjoyed all in front of me.” Now, he finds peace whether business is slow or booming. 10/Passion for impact: Over 10 years, their family has fostered 10 children. Brandon Craft believes if the church stepped in, Louisiana's foster crisis could disappear—there are as many churches as foster kids, after all. 11/What’s broken in foster care? Not the people—it's overwhelmed systems. “Caseworkers can adequately handle 10 kids...most have 50–60.” His vision: private-public partnerships to bring relief & lasting family transformation. 12/Legacy project: Honeycraft Farm A luxury farm resort & working farm, inspired by humble beginnings, family vision, and transformative hospitality. Picture 20 gorgeous cottages, a farm-to-table restaurant, and a place for future generations to thrive. 13/Final words: “Remain faithful. Enjoy both the highs AND lows. Don’t miss the journey by stressing over the moment. And if you want a next-level escape—keep an eye out for Honeycraft Farms’ opening this spring!”Which part of Brandon’s journey inspired you the most? Would you ever run a vertically integrated company or build a mission-driven family legacy? Drop your thoughts below

Ep.70 From Colombia to Louisiana: Gabriel Rincon Shares the Power of Perception and Giving

Muddy beginnings often lead to clear vision. That’s the journey of Gabriel Rincon, entrepreneur, leader, & founder of Mobius Internet IT and Communications, Louisiana’s only fixed wireless internet provider.Gabriel’s day? It starts with coffee for his wife, but the real grind is the relentless, organized support for clients, adapting as every day brings new challenges.Born in Cali, Colombia, Gabriel’s story is rooted in global perspective. His family fled Austria during WWII. His grandfather, once Austria’s Consul General, taught him resilience and the power of standing by your principles.Influential mentors shaped his journey: family, international teachers, and friends’ parents who guided him through adversity. Early education included psychology, civics, and world religions, lessons on empathy and humanity.Gabriel’s muddy moments? Learning that perception is reality. Misunderstandings in business and life can cloud relationships. He learned the power of active listening and aligning with those who also genuinely listen. His insight: "If everybody walks into a room ready to give, not get, everyone benefits". That’s givers’ gain. Transmit less, receive more, like a two-way radio, not just a broadcast.Advice to his younger self: Listen all the way before you respond. Don’t assume you know the answer before you hear the full story. Real relationships have depth, not just numbers. On community and generosity: Gabriel believes in helping others, but says the true test is “giving a hand up, not just a handout.” The goal? Empower people to become self-sufficient, restoring dignity and self-esteem.Legacy isn’t about a name on a building. Gabriel wants to be remembered as someone who made his community better, who left things kinder and more connected than he found them.Takeaway: True impact is made through listening, supporting, and empowering others. Build a life with deep relationships, generous actions, and a commitment to create opportunity, not just charity. What’s one lesson from Gabriel’s journey you’ll carry forward?
