Today, we’re talking about The Toys — the American pop girl group from Jamaica, Queens, New York, formed in 1961. The group became known for their bright, catchy sound and their biggest hit, “A Lover’s Concerto,”released in 1965. The song became a major success, selling more than two million copies and reaching No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100. But here’s something you might not know. Although The Toys were based in New York, two of the three members were born in North Carolina. The trio consisted of: Barbara Harris, born Barbara Ann Harris on August 18, 1945, in Elizabeth City, North Carolina. Barbara Parritt, born October 1, 1944, in Wilmington, North Carolina. And June Montiero, born July 1, 1946, in Queens, New York. So when you hear the voices of The Toys, you’re hearing a group with a special connection between New York and North Carolina. The group formed in 1961 and remained together until 1968, leaving behind a memorable place in 1960s pop and soul music. And their signature recording, “A Lover’s Concerto,” continues to introduce new generations to the sound of The Toys. Two of the three Toys were North Carolina-born. That’s a little piece of Carolina music history hiding inside a 1960s pop hit. I’m Gail Nobles. And that’s today’s story about The Toys. Tunes That Talk This episode includes AI-generated content.

Durell Coleman - Somebody Took My Love 2:12:26 7.45 PM

Story by: Gail Nobles Cover by: Gail Nobles Keyboardist: Gail Nobles Voice.actor: Gail Nobles Hello. I’m Gail Nobles. Welcome to Multi-Tunes. Today’s topic is Durell Coleman. In 1985, Durell Coleman released a memorable single titled "Somebody Took My Love," which quickly captured the attention of music lovers. The song reached number 12 on the Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart, becoming his most notable hit. The accompanying music video added to the song's charm with a heartfelt story. It follows Durell, who falls deeply in love with a waitress. However, she leaves her job to pursue a career in modeling, leaving Durell feeling lonely and abandoned. The video keeps viewers on the edge of their seats, wondering if they will reunite as it unfolds, culminating in a touching happy ending when she returns to him. Fans couldn’t help but connect with the emotional message of the song. The catchy chorus was so engaging that it often made listeners sing along: “Love, love / Somebody took my love, love / How can this be? / She said, 'Always be there for me.'” The soulful vocals and Richard Marx's  writing made "Somebody Took My Love" a staple on R&B charts, showcasing Durell's deep emotional range. It’s a song that many still enjoy today, reminding them of the powerful feelings of love and longing. Tunes That Talk

Chuckii Booker - Turned Away 10:29:25 8.51 PM

Photo: Spotify Promo Card Intro by:  Gail Nobles Story by: Gail Nobles Hey there, music lovers! Let’s talk about a jam that really turned some heads back in the day—“Turned Away” by Chuckii Booker. This was 1989, and it was Chuckii's debut single that shot right to the top of the Billboard R&B chart, locking in the number one spot for a whole week! You see, Chuckii, he's got that smooth voice that just pulls you right in. It was just something about his voice echoing through music and singing the words “Turned Away From Love”. You can hear him belt out the heartfelt words “Turned Away From Love” and you feel every bit of that emotion. When he sings, it’s like you’re right there with him, feeling the highs and lows of love. But Chuckii's not just a singer; he's a real musical powerhouse! He plays a bunch of instruments, writes songs, and even produces tracks. He’s from Los Angeles, and he rolled onto the scene in the late '80s, thanks to his godfather, the legendary Barry White, who signed him to his production company back in '84. Talk about starting off on the right foot! Before going solo, Chuckii was part of a band called Tease, where he rocked the keyboards for three years. So, when he finally dropped “Turned Away,” it was like a big reveal of all his hard work. And while it made waves on the R&B charts, even making it to number forty-two on the Hot 100, it’s that soulful vibe and richness in his voice that we remember the most. You’re listening to Multi-Tunes. I’m your host, Gail Nobles. Keep those tunes playing, and let’s celebrate the sounds of Chuckii Booker! Tunes That Talk
