[…] He got a five-year apprenticeship with a draper, learning to measure and cut cloth for a few shillings a week. But even then, William wasn't like the other shop boys. People remembered him as bookish and a little intense, the type who'd rather talk about botany or chemistry than make small talk. So it makes sense that William was itching for something more than a shop counter. After his apprenticeship ended, he took a few different drapery jobs before joining a company that sold clothing and supplies to the British military and colonial officials overseas.
