Unsigned Artist Frustrated with Record Labels || Music Business Newsletter with Matthew Rix

In this segment of the Music Business Newsletter, Matthew Rix responds to an unsigned artist frustrated by the growing expectations record labels place on musicians before offering them a record deal. Are labels expecting artists to do too much on their own? If an artist is already building a fan base, generating streams, and creating momentum independently, what exactly is the label bringing to the table? Matthew breaks down the changing relationship between artists and record labels, what labels are really looking for, and whether getting signed is still the ultimate goal for independent musicians. #MusicBusiness #MatthewRix #MusicIndustry #RecordLabels #UnsignedArtists #IndependentArtists #RecordDeals #ArtistDevelopment #MusicMarketing #MusicCareer #MusicIndustryAdvice #IndependentMusic #GettingSigned #MusicBusinessNewsletter #ArtistManagement if you have a question on the Music Industry just goto https://MusicBizNewsletter.com (https://MusicBizNewsletter.com)

Spotify Bot Scandal for Artists || Music Business Newsletter with Matthew Rix

One bad contract, one fake promo campaign, and an inherited $200,000 later, an artist is locked out of Spotify, frozen by DistroKid, and facing a major setback to her music career. If you make music, hire producers, or are tempted by “organic” playlist growth, this is a cautionary tale to hear before signing anything. Matthew Rix unpacks the story: a 12-song album recorded for $120,000; a producer receiving 60% of the royalties and 50% of the publishing; and a promotion company whose campaign appears to drive millions of streams before Spotify flags the plays as fraudulent bot activity. What looks like momentum turns into a career-threatening problem almost overnight. In this episode, Matthew discusses: - Why having an entertainment lawyer review a contract can matter - How fraudulent streaming campaigns can lead to takedowns and frozen accounts - Why a sudden spike in streams or followers can be a red flag - The risks of signing away royalties and publishing rights - What an artist may need to consider when rebuilding after a platform ban The story also raises concerns about vanity metrics: hundreds of thousands of social followers can mean little without real engagement. For independent artists, producers, and managers, this episode reminds them to scrutinize contracts, question suspicious growth, and be cautious of anyone promising shortcuts to success. This is commentary, not legal advice. Consult a qualified entertainment lawyer about contracts, rights, and disputes. Have a music industry question for Matthew? Artist Wants A Sponsor || Music Business Newsletter with Matthew Rix

Waiting for a sponsor, manager, band, or better gear to take your music career to the next level? In this episode, Matthew Rix challenges an independent artist’s assumptions about what’s holding him back. He explains why responsibility, focused effort, and audience growth matter more than building a team too soon. Matthew responds to a piano-playing singer-songwriter who performs at coffee shops, has around 400 monthly listeners, and has a song with about 35,000 streams. The artist wants sponsorships for a van, merchandise, and a website, along with a manager, booking agent, and bandmates. Matthew offers a blunt look at what sponsors and music industry professionals need to see before they invest their money, time, or reputation. In this episode, you’ll hear: - Why sponsorships are unlikely to solve an emerging artist’s biggest challenges - What managers and booking agents look for in independent artists - Why artists need to take responsibility for their own growth - How to prioritize songwriting, marketing, and live performance - When it makes sense to build a band, invest in gear, or sell merchandise - Practical ways to help live audiences find your music online If you’re an independent musician trying to build a sustainable music career, this episode reminds you to focus on the fundamentals and build real momentum before asking others to invest in your vision.
