013 Thirty Years of Music Ministry [Podcast]

This month CJM MUSIC celebrates its 30th birthday. Three decades of music and ministry — and in this special anniversary episode, Jo Boyce sits down with two of the people who have been at the heart of it all. Andrew Moss has been a familiar face in the line-up even before CJM MUSIC officially existed — in fact, Andrew first met co-founder Mike Stanley all the way back in 1993, through a Roger Jones musical in Birmingham. Claire Wilson, our violinist, first crossed paths with Jo and Mike in a recording studio in Oxford in the early 2000s, putting down string quartet parts for CJM favourites — Bread of Life and May Your Love — in, as she puts it, “the worst possible key for string players ever.” Listen Now Episode Highlghts Together, Jo Andrew and Claire look back over thirty years of music ministry — the memories, the moments, the conviction that has driven everything CJM MUSIC has made and done. We hear how Andrew and Claire each found their way into the CJM MUSIC story — from early recording sessions, Big Sing Liturgy Thing events and legendary 5:30am van journeys. Mike Stanley is very much present in the conversation too, thirteen years on, in the music we still sing and the way we still show up for the ministry he helped build. And Jo looks ahead to the next chapter, a season she describes as being as much about teaching and handing on to others as it is about continuing face-to-face ministry — because, as the conversation makes clear, there is power when music is kept live. 001 Remembering Mike Stanley ~ The Early Years [Podcast]

In this month’s episode, we remember and celebrate the music and legacy of our co-founder, Mike Stanley (https://www.cjmmusic.com/featured/mike-stanley-rip/), who sadly died on Thursday 6 June 2013, aged just 48. As we kick off the new year, Mike is very much in our hearts and minds. He would have celebrated his 49th birthday this month and one of his last public appearances with the CJM team was a year ago, for the BBC Radio 4 Sunday Worship broadcast on the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord. Remembering Mike Stanley In this episode Jo Boyce is talking to Andrew Moss, one of the many wonderful musicians who make up the CJM MUSIC Collective. Together they share their memories of the early days of the Boyce & Stanley musical partnership – even before the official incarnation of CJM MUSIC. Listen now: Songs discussed and played The songs that Jo and Andrew discuss in this episode are true CJM classics: I Am The Voice (https://www.cjmmusic.com/songs/i-am-the-voice-song/) Ave Verum (https://www.cjmmusic.com/songs/ave-verum-song/) Who Do You Say I Am (https://www.cjmmusic.com/songs/who-do-you-say-i-am-song/) Imagine a World (https://www.cjmmusic.com/songs/imagine-a-world-song/) Andrew mentions the new Mass settings written by Mike and recorded on on Rejoice n Sing Vol. 3 (https://www.cjmmusic.com/shop/rejoice-n-sing-vol-3-mass-settings-for-the-revised-translation-cd/)and we hear the Gloria from the Mass of St Jude (https://www.cjmmusic.com/rejoice-n-sing-vol-3-mass-settings-audio-cd-digital-songbook/). He also talks about being involved in the recording of ssongs for How Can We Keep from Singing? Vol. 3 (https://www.cjmmusic.com/shop/how-can-we-keep-from-singing-vol-3/) and Mike’s CD, Faith (https://www.cjmmusic.com/shop/faith-cd/). Listener Memories of Mike Hi it’s Millie from Huddersfield, one of my favourite memories of Mike is when the Walsignham pilgrimage in 2010 and I was sat on the ground with a sign and Mike came and sat next to me. We talked for at least 20 minutes about music and I could have sat and listened to him all day because he was so amazingly interesting and that memory will stay with me forever. My name is Pauline Payne and I run our folk group at St Mary’s Catholic Church in South Wigston, in Leicester we’ve been very inspired by Mike’s music, ministry and all the workshops we’ve been to with himself and Jo. We’d just like to say we always found him to be a very happy, pleasant, sincere and holy man who was proud of his faith and family and a very sincere way of passing on his faith to us all. An inspirational person whose work will go on for a long time.
