The Green Room S05E16 — Artist Development in Modern Music Industry

https://musiciansadvocate.org This episode dives deep into the seismic shifts in the music industry, exploring the demise of traditional artist development and the rise of "content generation." Our guest, industry insider Korky Tyson, unpacks how labels are now harvesting data instead of cultivating talent, and the immense challenges this poses for emerging artists. • The "golden era" of labels investing in artists for multiple albums is now a historical artifact. • Artist development has been replaced by content generation, with labels focused on virality over longevity. • Artists are forced to be their own labels, marketing departments, and A&R, an absurd and resource-intensive task. • Platforms act as digital landlords, renting access to audiences whose engagement can be wiped out by algorithm changes. • The advent of AI-generated music presents a new, relentless tide of competition for human artists. Here is the full transcript: [SHANE] Welcome back, everybody, to The Green Room, here on Musicians Advocate Radio, musiciansadvocate.org. Always good to have you with us. I’m Shane, of course, and to my left, always deep in the guts of some vintage tube, Mr. Roger. [ROGER] Shane, good to be here, though the guts of that tube are certainly no place for a gentleman. Just saying. [SHANE] Indeed. Indeed. And today, we are fortunate enough to be joined by a gentleman who is always deep in the guts of the *industry*, whether he likes it or not. The one, the only... Korky Tyson. [KORKY] Thank you, Shane, Roger. It is indeed a pleasure, as always, to be allowed to shed some light on the… let’s call them… *less obvious* currents moving beneath the placid surface of the modern music business. It’s certainly not a gentle stream these days. More like an undertow, really. [ROGER] Or a rip current, for half the artists out there. You know, we talk a lot about the gear, the craft, the performance… but man, getting heard today? Getting *developed* today? It feels like you’re paddling upstream with a broken oar. [SHANE] It’s a completely different landscape, isn’t it? The concept of "artist development" — that golden era where a label would sign a band, invest in them for two, three albums, let them find their sound, build a following… that’s a fairy tale now. Almost feels like a historical artifact. [ROGER] A relic. Like a germanium transistor in a modern pedal. Nobody’s gonna drop that kind of cash on an unknown anymore, not when every kid with a laptop can put out an album a week. It’s not just broken, Shane, it’s… gone. The whole infrastructure. [KORKY] Precisely, Roger. And it’s worse than merely “gone.” It’s been *replaced* by something far more insidious. We’re no longer talking about "artist development"; we’re discussing "content generation." The shift is profound. Labels, or what remains of them, are no longer cultivating talent; they’re harvesting data. They're looking for virality, not longevity. A momentary flicker, not a slow burn. [SHANE] Harvesting data. Hmm. That’s a stark way to put it, Korky, but… probably accurate. So, for the emerging artist out there, the one with real talent, real songs, but no built-in audience of millions… what’s the path? If the labels aren’t doing the heavy lifting of artist development, who is? [KORKY] Well, Shane, ostensibly, the artist themselves. But that’s a fool’s errand in many respects. Imagine being told, “You are now solely responsible for being your own record label, your own marketing department, your own booking agent, your own A&R… and oh yes, continue to produce compelling, original art in your spare time.” It’s absurd. The resources required are astronomical. The knowledge base is immense. [ROGER] And the tools they give you for all this? A few analytics dashboards on Spotify that tell you nothing useful, and an Instagram algorithm that changes every Tuesday. My old boss used to say, “If it’s free, *you’re* the product.” And that’s what these platforms are doing. They’re selling *you* to advertisers, not selling *your music* to fans. [KORKY] Roger, you’ve encapsulated the core dilemma with admirable brevity. The platforms, these so-called facilitators of global reach, are simply digital landlords. You are renting space. Your audience? You don’t own them; you're renting access *to* them. And the terms of that lease can change at any moment. Overnight, your meticulously cultivated follower count can be rendered irrelevant by a tweak to the algorithm, a shift in preferred media format, or the introduction of a new "engagement metric" that rewards… well, whatever it is they decide to reward that week. [SHANE] It’s a moving target, isn’t it? One minute it’s short-form video, the next it’s audio-only, then back to long-form, then a new platform pops up and everyone scrambles… [ROGER] Remember when MySpace was the be-all, end-all? Everyone had their custom profile page, their top 8 friends… Bands lived and died by MySpace. You could actually discover new music on there. Now, try to find a new band on Facebook. Good luck. [KORKY] Ah, MySpace. A simpler time. Before the age of the ubiquitous algorithm. Before the platforms realized they could monetize *attention* more effectively than *art*. And before the inevitable encroachment of, shall we say, synthesized creativity. [SHANE] Synthesized creativity. You're talking about AI, Korky? I figured that would come up. [KORKY] Of course it comes up, Shane. It *must* come up. It’s not just a technical innovation; it’s a philosophical shift. When a machine can generate a commercially viable track, complete with lyrics, melody, and arrangement, in a matter of minutes, what does that do to the perceived value of human artistic endeavor? And if a platform can then push that AI-generated content through its algorithms, seamlessly integrating it into playlists… well, the playing field, already tilted, becomes a precipice. [ROGER] Hold on, Korky. You’re not still reeling from that animated series deal, are you? The one that went to the AI character instead of… [KORKY] (A sharp intake of breath) Roger, my personal experiences, while undeniably instructive, are not the point. The point is the systemic impact. The *reality* that artists are not only competing against millions of other human artists but now against an exponentially growing tide of machine-generated, algorithmically optimized "content." Content that never asks for royalties, never demands a tour bus, never complains about the catering. [SHANE] Never complains about the catering… now *that* is a feature, not a bug, in some ways. But seriously, Korky, you’re right. It’s a fundamental challenge. So, if artist development as we knew it is dead, if platforms are essentially landlords extracting rent, and if AI is creating an endless stream of competition… what’s the actual advice for a working musician trying to build a career right now? How do they even make an effective Electronic Press Kit, for example, if the gatekeepers are algorithms instead of human A&R reps? [KORKY] The EPK, Shane, has evolved. It’s no longer a static document; it’s a dynamic portfolio. It’s less about a glossy PDF you send to an A&R, and more about a carefully curated digital footprint. Your social media presence, your streaming numbers, your engagement metrics – love them or loathe them – these *are* your new EPK. But with a critical distinction: you must possess what I refer to as "digital proprietorship." [ROGER] Digital proprietorship. Sounds like something I should talk to my lawyer about. [KORKY] You should, Roger. It means owning your audience, truly owning them. Not just renting access through Instagram or TikTok. It means building an email list. Direct-to-fan communication. Creating a private community. A Bandcamp page where *you* set the terms and get a fair share, rather than the abysmal fractions of pennies from Spotify. It's about disintermediation. Cutting out the middleman. Because these platforms, as vast and ubiquitous as they are, are not truly on your side. Their business model is not aligned with yours. [SHANE] So, it's about building your own little walled garden, so to speak, within the wild west of the internet. A place where you control the narrative, you control the access, and you control the relationship with your fans. [ROGER] Reminds me of the early days of indie labels, before the big guys swallowed everyone up. You had your small mailing list, you sold tapes out of the trunk of your car… or CD-Rs, depending on when you started. It was direct. You actually *knew* your fans. You had their names. [SHANE] Korky, you've always been one to connect the dots between the grand machinations of venture capital and the musician trying to pay rent. What’s driving this platform behavior, this push for “content creation” over “artist development”? Is it just about advertising dollars, or is there something deeper? [KORKY] It’s always deeper, Shane. It’s about asset acquisition and market dominance. These platforms are not merely media companies; they are data companies. They accrue value not just from ad revenue but from the sheer volume of user data they collect. Every click, every listen, every share—it all feeds into a larger model of predictive analytics and behavioral targeting. Art, in this context, becomes a highly effective lure. The more "content" they can facilitate, whether human or AI-generated, the more users they attract, the more data they gather, and the more indispensable they become. It’s a network effect, designed to consolidate power and make switching costs prohibitive. [ROGER] So the artist is just… bait. Interesting. That’s a bleak assessment. But it makes sense when you look at how little most musicians get paid by the streamers. It’s like they don’t actually want to pay for the music, they just want the music to get you *to* the platform. [SHANE] It’s like the great festival gold rush of '78, Roger. So many upstart events popped up, promising the moon, all trying to grab a piece of the growing youth market. Most crashed and burned, taking a lot of artists' guarantees with them. The ones that survived were the ones that learned to monetize every single aspect of the experience, not just the ticket. You remember the Alameda County Fairgrounds Festival? They were selling souvenir air from the venue. *Air*. [ROGER] (Chuckles) Oh, I remember. And the souvenir *dirt* from the stage. You could buy a little vial of it. Wild. But yeah, same principle, just digital now. They’re selling digital dirt. So, Korky, for a musician who hears all this and feels overwhelmed, what’s the first, most tangible step they should take to start building this "digital proprietorship"? [KORKY] Excellent question, Roger, and a critical one. The first step, unequivocally, is to prioritize building an email list. Forget follower counts for a moment. An email address is a direct line of communication that you own. It's not subject to an algorithm. It's a relationship. Offer something of value in exchange for that email – an exclusive track, a behind-the-scenes video, early access to tickets. Make it clear that this is where your most dedicated fans will find the true connection. [SHANE] So it’s about going back to basics in a way… building community one fan at a time, but with modern tools. And seeing the platforms not as your primary home, but as a distribution channel. A way to lead people *back* to your own space. [KORKY] Exactly. Use the platforms to drive traffic to your owned channels. Use them for discovery, yes, but don't *rely* on them for communication or monetization. And understand that engagement is the new currency. Authentic engagement, not just superficial likes. Respond to comments, build relationships. Make your fans feel seen, heard, and valued. Because they are the only true assets you possess. [ROGER] That makes sense. It’s like the old street teams, but online. You gotta put in the legwork. No magic bullet. [SHANE] Never has been a magic bullet, has there? But knowing the landscape, knowing the traps, knowing where the real value lies… that’s half the battle. And it sounds like the real value is in those direct relationships. [KORKY] Indeed, Shane. The industry may not be developing artists, but it is certainly developing new ways for artists to be exploited. Understanding that dynamic is not cynicism; it's self-preservation. It's arming yourself with knowledge in an unequal fight. Adapt, yes. But adapt strategically, and always, always with an eye toward sovereignty over your own creative output and your own audience. [SHANE] Sovereignty. A powerful word. And a crucial concept for any artist navigating these waters. Korky, thank you, as always, for bringing that essential perspective to The Green Room. It’s always… illuminating. [KORKY] My pleasure, Shane. Keep fighting the good fight. [ROGER] Thanks, Korky. Always a ride. [SHANE] That’s Korky Tyson, ladies and gentlemen. And that’s our time for today here in The Green Room. Remember, musiciansadvocate.org is always here for you. We’ll be back next week. Until then… keep making music, and know your business.

The Green Room S05E15 — AI, content creation, musician advocacy

https://musiciansadvocate.org This week, the hosts are joined by a familiar voice, bringing a critical perspective on the latest industry "innovations." They dive deep into the rapidly evolving world of generative AI and its impact on musicians, exploring the promises and perils of automated content creation. • How new AI tools are being marketed as a "panacea" for artists' content demands. • The potential for AI to homogenize artistic voice and erode originality. • Concerns about platforms prioritizing AI-generated content over human creativity. • Understanding the "siren song" of efficiency versus the burden of authenticity. • A personal anecdote about losing a creative project to AI for "cost-effectiveness." Here is the full transcript: [SHANE] Welcome back… to The Green Room. Musicians Advocate Radio… musiciansadvocate.org. Just two lifers… talking shop. And sometimes… a third. [ROGER] Or a fourth, depending on who wanders in for the free coffee. Though I think Korky drank all of that this morning. [SHANE] He does have a… particular thirst for our artisanal blend. Probably… keeps him sharp. For all the… grand insights he brings to the table. [ROGER] Speaking of tables, Shane, you remember the year they had that one stage at Glastonbury, must’ve been ’94, where the entire audience section was just… picnic tables? You couldn’t even mosh, you had to politely ask people to pass the coleslaw. [SHANE] Ah, yes… the year of the Great Coleslaw Riots. Or was it… the Great Potato Salad Peace Accord? Details are hazy… but I do recall… someone attempting a stage dive… onto a family of four… having a quiet picnic. It didn’t end well… for the deviled eggs. [ROGER] Nah, that was Reading ‘96, man. Totally different vibe. The Glastonbury picnic table stage, that was the year the sound engineer tried to mix the entire set through a Fisher-Price toy mixer he found in a hedge. Said it had a ‘unique sonic warmth.’ Didn’t even last two songs before it melted. [SHANE] A unique sonic warmth… that melted. Sounds about right… for some of the… *innovations* we’ve seen in… artist development lately. Always a new toy… always a new… promise. [ROGER] Exactly. And half the time, it’s just someone repackaging old ideas with a new buzzword, trying to get artists to buy into something that doesn’t actually help them reach ears or build a career. It’s always about the platform, never the player. [KORKY] A rather… prescient observation, Roger. And quite opportune. [SHANE] Speak of the devil… and he appears. The air… just got heavier. Korky Tyson… joining us in The Green Room. [ROGER] Korky! You got new glasses or something? You’re radiating even more… gravitas than usual. [KORKY] Merely a heightened sense of… professional urgency. I happened to overhear your current discourse regarding… shall we say… the cyclical nature of promotional chicanery. And I must interject, because what is currently unfolding in the broader digital landscape is not merely a repackaging. It is… an evolution. A rather… insidious one, at that. [SHANE] Insidious… You have our attention, Korky. What new… technological marvel… has caught your… discerning eye? [KORKY] It is not a singular marvel, Shane, but rather a confluence. We are witnessing the maturation, and indeed, the aggressive commodification, of generative AI across all creative industries. Specifically, for our musician friends, we are seeing an explosion of tools being marketed directly to them as the panacea for content creation. [ROGER] Oh, you mean like those apps that write your social media posts for you? Or generate a dozen different captions for your new single? I’ve seen those. Just sounds like a fancy spell-checker to me. What’s the big deal? [KORKY] The "big deal," Roger, is that these tools are becoming increasingly sophisticated. They aren't just generating text anymore. They are synthesizing entire marketing campaigns, crafting video scripts, even proposing melodic fragments or lyrical themes based on an artist's previous output or a desired genre. They promise to solve the artist's perennial problem: the insatiable demand for *content* across an ever-expanding array of platforms. "Never run out of ideas! Automate your social media presence! Maximize your reach!"—that is the siren song. [SHANE] The siren song… Korky. Sounds a lot like… the auto-tune revolution. Or the… home studio revolution. Each promising… liberation… but often delivering… a different kind of… burden. [KORKY] Precisely, Shane. The promise is efficiency, reach, and a leveling of the playing field. The reality, however, is far more complex. Consider the implications for authenticity. If an artist's social media presence, their very public voice, is largely being crafted by an algorithm, where does the genuine connection with the audience reside? Is the artist merely becoming a curator of AI-generated personality? [ROGER] You're telling me it's like using an AI to choose your amp settings? Or even worse, to *design* your amp settings? No, thanks. I like the human touch, the accidental feedback, the imperfections that make it *real*. I bet these AI things just make everything sound… beige. Or look… beige. [KORKY] Beige is a rather… astute descriptor, Roger. The inherent danger is a homogenization of artistic voice. As these models are trained on vast datasets of existing content, they tend to optimize for what has proven "successful" in the past, leading to a subtle but pervasive erosion of true originality. Furthermore, the platforms themselves—the very conduits through which artists seek to be heard—are increasingly prioritizing and rewarding AI-generated content. Why? Because it’s cheap, it's scalable, and it keeps users engaged in a superficially novel way, often at the expense of genuine human creativity. I mean, I personally… witnessed a situation, not so long ago, where a rather lucrative voiceover project… which I was, I might add, quite well-suited for… was ultimately awarded to an AI-generated character. The producers… cited "cost-effectiveness" and "unlimited availability." It was… instructive. [SHANE] Cost-effectiveness… and unlimited availability. That’s the dream… for the industry. Not always… for the artist. So Korky… what’s the play here? Do artists embrace this… with open arms… or do they… barricade the studio door? [KORKY] Neither, entirely. The technology is here, and it is advancing exponentially. To ignore it would be… naive. However, to blindly adopt it as a complete outsourcing solution for one’s entire artistic persona would be… perilous. Artists must understand these tools for what they are: *tools*. Not collaborators, not replacements for their unique voice or vision. They can be employed for mundane, repetitive tasks—generating initial drafts of emails, scheduling social media posts, perhaps even brainstorming very generic ideas—but the final artistic stamp, the *personality*, the *humanity*, must remain firmly in the artist’s hands. [ROGER] So it’s like using a really fancy, super-fast drum machine. You can program it to play whatever you want, but it still sounds… programmed. Until a real drummer takes it and messes with it, gives it some swing, some ghost notes, some *feel*. That’s the difference. The AI gives you the notes, the artist gives it the *music*. [KORKY] An apt analogy, Roger. The danger is that the platforms will begin to implicitly or explicitly demand that level of AI-assisted output, simply because it means more content, more engagement, more data points for them to monetize. Artists could find themselves in a position where their organically created content is simply drowned out by a deluge of AI-generated material that is subtly favored by the algorithms. This is not about efficiency for the artist; it’s about efficiency for the platform. [SHANE] So the battle… is not against the AI itself… but against the expectation… that we all become… content factories. Which is… precisely what they’ve been pushing… for years now. This is just… the next iteration. [KORKY] Precisely, Shane. And the critical element for artists is to understand that true artist development has always been about cultivating a unique voice, building genuine relationships with an audience, and delivering authentic experiences. These AI tools, while seemingly offering shortcuts, can, paradoxically, dilute the very essence of what makes an artist compelling. They must be used with extreme caution and always as a subservient aid, never as the primary creative engine. The moment an artist outsources their core identity to an algorithm, they risk becoming indistinguishable from the digital white noise. [ROGER] And then what’s the point? If you’re just another soundalike, another generic social media feed, why would anyone bother? You gotta give people a reason to stick around, something *you* bring to the table. Not some algorithm’s idea of what sells. That’s what’s been missing in the industry for years, though. Artist development used to be about finding unique voices and nurturing them. Now it's about finding out who can churn out the most content to feed the beast. [SHANE] The beast… always hungry. Korky… thank you for shining… your rather piercing light… on this particular beast. Always… enlightening. [KORKY] Always a pleasure, gentlemen. The warning, as ever, is free. The vigilance… well, that costs a little more. You keep that artisanal blend flowing. [ROGER] We’ll keep the coffee flowing, Korky. Thanks for the heads-up. Shane, you remember the festival where they tried to power the main stage with static electricity from the crowd? Electric Picnic, I think it was called. Back in the early 2000s? [SHANE] Electric Picnic… that was the one where… the sound cut out every time… someone stopped shuffling their feet. Resulting in… a very awkward… silent disco. The entire crowd… became… a human capacitor. [ROGER] Exactly! And the engineers kept shouting at everyone to jump up and down harder for more wattage. It was a disaster. But at least it was a *human* disaster. Not some… AI-generated beige static. [SHANE] A human disaster… is something… we can work with. Much like… a human artist. Always… prefer the human touch. Even when… it’s a bit messy. [ROGER] Always. So for all you artists out there, don’t let the machines take over your magic. Keep it real. Keep it human. [SHANE] Words to live by. We’ll be back… with more insight… from The Green Room. Stay tuned.

The Green Room S05E14 — Sunday Oct 4

https://musiciansadvocate.org This episode dives into the ever-shifting landscape of the music industry, exploring the impact of AI-generated content on artists' visibility and income. The conversation unpacks the "Great Content Deluge" and how AI-driven curation is fundamentally changing how music is discovered and valued. • The relentless challenges artists face, from tech shifts to new streaming algorithms. • Here is the full transcript: [SHANE] Welcome back to The Green Room, on Musicians Advocate Radio, musiciansadvocate.org. Just two lifers, sometimes three, talking shop… about what it means to be an artist in the current climate. It’s a climate that… well, it always feels like a storm coming in, doesn’t it, Roger? [ROGER] Always, Shane. Or like the forecast changes completely every other Tuesday. You think you’ve got your setup dialled in for the gig, then the venue decides to go digital-only, no amps allowed, or some new streaming algorithm drops that makes your last six months of work disappear from playlists. [SHANE] Ah, the ever-shifting sands beneath our feet… I remember once, back in ’78, at the Summer Jam in Watkins Glen… the sound guy just… packed up and left. Mid-set. Left the whole rig for the roadies to figure out. Said he’d had enough of the humidity ruining his tubes. [ROGER] Watkins Glen, ’78, huh? I thought that was the year they had the infamous "Great Stage Short-Out" due to a rogue lightning strike during Santana’s soundcheck. Or was that ’73? The one where the PA for the second stage blew a transformer the size of a mini-fridge, and they had to run everything through a single mono mix for the rest of the day? Nobody could tell what was what. [SHANE] You might be right about the transformer… the humidity part, though, that was definitely ’78. It was like playing inside a hot, wet blanket. Speakers were sweating. Amps were just… groaning. You had to practically dry-ice the cabinets just to keep the caps from bulging. [ROGER] Oh, I know that feeling. Been there, seen that. The heat on some of those old tube amps… you could cook an egg on the chassis. But speaking of things heating up, and things groaning… and things that are sometimes hard to tell what’s what… we have a returning guest with us today. He usually brings us the news before it’s even news. The man, the myth, the legend… Korky Tyson. [KORKY] Gentlemen. Always a distinct pleasure to rejoin you in this, your… digital salon. Shane, Roger. I trust you are both well, and have not yet succumbed entirely to the siren song of algorithmic supremacy, or indeed, the insidious whisper of AI-generated jingles infiltrating the subconscious. [SHANE] Korky. Good to hear your voice, old friend. Though I must admit, I just heard a jingle for a new brand of artisanal artisanal mayonnaise that had a very… familiar harmonic structure. I wondered if I’d heard it before… or if it just *felt* like I had. [ROGER] See, Korky, you’ve already got Shane questioning reality. What fresh hell are you bringing to our attention this week? Is it another platform merger we didn’t ask for? Another royalty rate adjustment that leaves us all scratching our heads and wondering if we owe *them* money now? [KORKY] Well, Roger, your cynicism is, as always, both refreshing and entirely justified. But no, not a merger this time… at least, not in the traditional sense. What I’m seeing, quite clearly now, is a seismic shift in the very *fabric* of artist visibility and income, driven by what I can only describe as the "Great Content Deluge"… primarily fueled by generative AI. [SHANE] The Great Content Deluge… sounds like the name of a prog-rock concept album from ’75. I’d listen to that. What does that mean for the working musician, Korky? Is it more noise to cut through? Or is it something more… systemic? [KORKY] It is precisely that, Shane. More systemic. We are moving from an era of platform-driven discovery to an era of *AI-driven curation*. Think about it: every streaming service, every social media feed, every short-form video app… they are all becoming sophisticated AI gatekeepers. And now, they’re not just curating human-created content; they’re dealing with an exponential increase in AI-generated tracks, songs, and even entire virtual artists. [ROGER] AI-generated artists… I knew it. That’s what I’m talking about with the shifting sands. How are you supposed to compete with something that doesn’t need to eat, sleep, or pay rent? Or even learn an instrument? Or, for that matter, *feel* anything? [KORKY] Precisely, Roger. And here’s the rub: these AI-driven systems are optimizing for *engagement*. Not necessarily for quality, not for originality, and certainly not for artist development in the traditional sense. They are looking for patterns that keep listeners hooked, and generative AI can produce an infinite stream of content tailored to those patterns. The problem is, many of these patterns are derived from… well, from *human* artists. From *you*. From *us*. [SHANE] So, they’re feeding our own creative output into the machine… to create more output… that then competes with us… for less money… on platforms that are harder to get noticed on… because of the sheer volume of this new, machine-made content? Am I tracking this correctly, Korky? My head always starts to swim when we talk about this cycle. It feels a bit like a self-eating snake, doesn’t it? [KORKY] An ouroboros, Shane, yes. A particularly hungry one that has developed a taste for intellectual property. What we’re witnessing is a massive devaluation of human creative work, not necessarily by malicious intent, but by sheer, unadulterated *volume*. When the supply of "listenable" audio becomes infinite, the perceived value of any single track—or any single *artist*—diminishes dramatically. The platforms benefit from endless content; the artists… less so. [ROGER] So, what does a band in a garage in Ohio, just trying to get their first EP out, do about this? They’re already facing a mountain to climb, getting noticed on Spotify or TikTok. Now they’ve got to out-create a supercomputer? [KORKY] That is the existential question, isn’t it, Roger? And the answer, as frustrating as it may sound, lies in a re-emphasis on what technology cannot (yet) replicate: authenticity, human connection, and genuine community. The platforms, with their AI gatekeepers, are becoming less about discovery and more about *validation* of existing, strong connections. [SHANE] So… owning your audience… that becomes even more critical now. Even more than it ever was when we started talking about it all those years ago. The email list, the direct fan engagement, the merch table after the show… the human touch. [KORKY] Absolutely, Shane. The direct relationship is paramount. Email lists, private community platforms, exclusive content for patrons, even just good old-fashioned meet-and-greets after a show. These are the fortresses against the deluge. The AI can process gigabytes of audio, but it cannot authentically share a post-show beer with a fan who just drove three hours to see you play. It cannot sign a t-shirt with a personal message that makes that fan feel seen, feel like they're part of something real. [ROGER] Right, so you’re saying musicians need to spend less time trying to game the algorithms, and more time actually building a *fanbase*? Which, honestly, sounds like what we should have been telling them all along. But it’s harder now, isn’t it? When everyone’s attention is so fragmented by the same algorithms. [KORKY] It is harder, Roger, because the noise floor is so much higher. But the strategy remains the same, merely amplified in its necessity. Understand that the platforms are tools for *amplification* once you have a core, not necessarily for *initial genesis* of that core. Use social media to drive people to your email list, to your Bandcamp, to your Patreon, to your *website*—where you control the narrative and the data. Do not build your house on rented land. [SHANE] Never build your house on rented land. That’s an oldie but a goodie, Korky. A Green Room classic. So, for the emerging artist, an EPK still matters, right? But maybe the focus of that EPK shifts a little… it’s not just about showcasing the music, but about showcasing the *human behind the music*? The story? The connection? [KORKY] Precisely. An EPK must now articulate not just your sound, but your *soul*. Who are you? What do you stand for? What unique human experience do you bring to your art? Because that is the only thing that distinguishes you from a perfectly competent, infinitely scalable AI that can mimic any genre, any style, any vocal timbre. Your *story* is your brand now. Your *vulnerability* is your strength. Your *imperfections* are your unique selling proposition. [ROGER] I like that. Imperfections are your unique selling proposition. That’ll preach. So, artists need to double down on what makes them… human. Their individual voice, their specific history, the mistakes they make on stage because they’re *human*. [KORKY] Indeed. And to be vigilant. The tech companies will continue to push the boundaries of what AI can do, and the regulations, if they ever catch up, will always be playing catch-up. Artists must be aware of how their work is being used, how their data is being ingested, and how to protect their unique human spark. Don't be afraid to experiment with AI as a tool, but never let it become the master of your creative process or your identity. [SHANE] It’s a bit like learning to drive a fast car, Korky. You learn to control it, you learn its quirks, you don’t let it drive *you*. You respect its power… but you always have your hands on the wheel. [KORKY] An apt analogy, Shane. Though I would add, ensure you own the car, the road, and preferably, the gas station too. Because otherwise, you're just paying rent for the ride. [ROGER] You hear that, garage bands? Get yourselves an email list. Start saving for that gas station. It’s a long game, always has been, always will be. But now you’ve got to navigate an entire digital ocean full of robots trying to sing your song. [SHANE] And probably pretty well, too. But they don’t have your story. They don’t have your sweat and grit. They don’t have that moment when the amp tubes glow just right, and the feedback hums a perfect fifth… and you and the crowd are all one thing. That’s the magic, isn’t it? That’s what they can’t automate. [KORKY] Not yet, Shane. And it is our collective duty, as musicians, as advocates, as human beings, to ensure they never fully do. [SHANE] Korky Tyson, always a pleasure. You always give us something to chew on. Something real. We appreciate you, my friend. [KORKY] The pleasure, as always, is mine, gentlemen. Until next time. [SHANE] That was Korky Tyson, our industry insider, with some very potent truths about the current landscape. He’s right, you know. It comes back to the fundamentals. Always does. Own your audience. Be authentic. Build those relationships. That’s your leverage in this brave new… automated world. [ROGER] And don’t forget to check those tubes, folks. The AI can’t fix that hum. [SHANE] Indeed. You’ve been listening to The Green Room, on Musicians Advocate Radio. We’ll be back next time with more shop talk, more advice, and maybe another bit of festival lore you never knew you needed. Until then, keep making that music. And keep it real. We’ll see you down the road.

The Green Room S05E13 — Artist Development

https://musiciansadvocate.org This episode explores the ever-changing world of artist development, dissecting how musicians Here is the full transcript: [SHANE] Welcome back to The Green Room, on Musicians Advocate Radio dot org. It's Sunday, September 27th, 2026, and we're talking about the ever-shifting sands beneath the feet of every artist trying to make a living, trying to get heard… trying to just exist in this wild new world of music. [ROGER] Wild is right, Shane. Sometimes it feels less like an industry and more like a high-stakes scavenger hunt, where the clues change every Tuesday. [SHANE] And the map… the map is always being redrawn, isn't it? Today, we’re digging into artist development. What does it even mean anymore? The whole ecosystem has just… morphed. Disappeared, in some cases. Reappeared in another form, usually less artist-friendly. We’ve seen the major labels all but abandon true artist development, right? The long-term nurturing, the investment over several albums… that’s largely gone. [ROGER] Gone, like the warmth from a vacuum tube after the power's cut. Poof. Now, they want a fully formed, fully viral, self-sufficient entity that already has a million TikTok followers, a finished album, and a tour bus running on good vibes. And then they want to scoop up a big percentage of whatever you’ve already built. [SHANE] Yeah. Which leaves the heavy lifting… the actual *development*… to the artist themselves. And that means understanding so much more than just making great music. It means understanding the business of getting heard. So let's start with the basics, or what used to be the basics. The EPK. The Electronic Press Kit. Still a thing, Roger? [ROGER] Oh, it’s still a thing, Shane, but it’s not just a PDF in an email anymore. That’s like showing up to a gig with a cassette demo. It’s got to be dynamic. It’s got to be a living, breathing digital hub. We’re talking a dedicated page on your website, not just a Dropbox link. That page needs high-res photos, right? Not just one, a gallery. A polished bio, yes, but also short, punchy quotes from reputable sources. Streaming links, sure, but also direct links to purchase your music, your merch. Tour dates. Contact info, clearly visible. [SHANE] And the video… a good EPK needs video, right? Not just a lyric video. [ROGER] Absolutely. A professional, well-shot live performance clip, maybe a short, engaging interview. Something that shows not just what you *sound* like, but what you *are* like. Your stage presence. Your vibe. And it all needs to be mobile-optimized. Most bookers, most journalists, they’re checking that stuff on their phones, probably between flights. If it’s clunky, if it takes forever to load, they’re gone. Swipe. Next. It’s brutal. [KORKY] If I may interject, gentlemen, the very concept of the "press kit" is undergoing a significant metamorphosis, not merely in its format, but in its fundamental purpose. It’s no longer about merely informing the gatekeepers—the traditional media, the labels—but about captivating the *audience* directly. The lines have blurred, you see. Your EPK now serves as much as a public-facing discovery tool as it does an industry pitch. And this, of course, brings us to the elephant in the room… the omnipresent, omnivorous beast of social media and its ever-shifting algorithms. [SHANE] Ah, Korky Tyson. Just in time to remind us of the beast. Good to have you with us, my friend. [ROGER] Speaking of beasts, remember the one at Woodstock ’94, the mudslide during Metallica? Everyone was just… consumed. That was a beast. [KORKY] A beast of meteorological origin, Roger, not one engineered by venture capitalists in Silicon Valley to extract your creative essence and monetize your attention span. But yes, the mud was rather… pervasive. The point, gentlemen, is that artists are now compelled to be content creators first, musicians second. And the platforms—TikTok, Instagram, YouTube, even those nascent, ephemeral VR spaces—they demand constant feeding. And they demand it in a very specific, often soul-crushing, way. [SHANE] The algorithm… it’s a capricious god. [KORKY] Indeed. And an increasingly opaque one. What many artists fail to grasp is that these algorithms are not designed to promote *art*. They are designed to promote *engagement*. And engagement, quite often, means controversy, spectacle, or something just catchy enough to scroll past quickly, but not so deep as to require actual thought. And with the rise of sophisticated AI tools, creating such "content" is becoming alarmingly easy for non-artists, or even for AI-generated personas. [ROGER] Oh, here we go. The AI bogeyman. [KORKY] Not a bogeyman, Roger, a very real, very present threat to the creative economy. I’ve seen firsthand how an AI-generated character, fully voiced, fully animated, with a backstory meticulously crafted by large language models, can secure an endorsement deal that a human artist, with actual talent and a real fanbase, was in line for. This isn’t science fiction. This is today. And these algorithms? They can be fed, they can be gamed, by AI-generated content just as easily, often more efficiently, than by human creations. So, for the independent artist, the battle for visibility becomes not just against other human artists, but against an increasingly sophisticated machine-generated wave. [SHANE] So if the platforms are a losing game… or at least a highly rigged one… what's the play for the artist, Korky? How do you carve out a space, how do you genuinely connect and own your audience, when the very ground you're building on is constantly shifting, constantly demanding more? [KORKY] Precisely, Shane. The answer, ironically, lies in the oldest forms of connection, digitally re-imagined. You must own your audience. And by that, I mean direct access. An email list. A solid, engaging newsletter. A private community, perhaps on a platform you control or at least one with more artist-friendly terms, where you can communicate directly without the capricious whims of an algorithm deciding if your message is worthy of being seen. This is your life raft. This is your true asset. Your followers on social media are not *your* audience; they are the platform's audience, temporarily loaned to you. [ROGER] He’s right, you know. I see so many artists obsessing over follower counts. Which is a vanity metric. You could have a million followers and sell ten t-shirts. But if you have a thousand engaged people on an email list, those are your true fans. Those are the ones who show up, who buy the merch, who back the Kickstarter. Those are your patrons, in the true sense of the word. And that’s where the industry has failed, isn't it? They've pushed artists onto these platforms without adequately educating them on how to actually build a sustainable career *off* of them. [SHANE] The industry has always been about extraction, hasn't it? Always looking for the next gold rush, without much thought for the miners. The early streaming era… remember the hype? "Democratizing music," they said. Everyone gets a chance. And now… it's just a new form of gatekeeping, a new form of consolidation, with different gatekeepers. The numbers for individual artists… it's just grim. [KORKY] Grim is an understatement, Shane. The average per-stream payout, even for independent artists on aggregators, remains in the fractions of a penny. And with the recent shifts by major streaming platforms—altering their payout structures, de-emphasizing tracks below a certain play count, even imposing minimum thresholds for monetization—it's becoming an almost insurmountable challenge for developing artists to earn anything meaningful from streaming alone. This isn’t a bug in the system; it’s a feature. It concentrates power, it consolidates revenue, and it drives artists to generate more and more "content" for less and less return. It's a race to the bottom, meticulously engineered. [ROGER] And then they slap you with "artist tools" that just let you promote *their* platform more. Like you’re their unpaid marketing intern. It’s all a shell game. You want to survive? You need to diversify. Merchandise. Direct sales of digital downloads. Patrons on platforms like Patreon. Small, intimate gigs where you can actually make some money at the door and merch table. Lessons. Sync licensing. Anything but putting all your eggs in the streaming basket. [SHANE] It feels like we've come full circle, in a way. Back to the days when the band had to be everything: the musicians, the promoters, the booking agents, the merch sellers, the publicists. Only now, you have to be all of that, plus a video editor, a social media manager, and a data analyst. It's a lot to ask of someone whose primary passion is, you know, making music. [KORKY] And who, in this fragmented landscape, is truly fostering that talent? Who is providing the guidance, the financial support, the incubation period that true artistic development requires? The labels, as we've established, are largely out of that business. Educational institutions provide technical skills, but rarely the entrepreneurial acumen needed for this hyper-accelerated environment. It's a void. A vacuum where artists are expected to conjure success from sheer willpower and, increasingly, from the fleeting attention of an audience overwhelmed by choice and inundated by machine-generated noise. [ROGER] It’s like trying to find a needle in a haystack, only the haystack is made of needles, and half of them are AI. [SHANE] Remember, Roger, when they tried to find Jimmy Page at the Bath Festival in '70? He was supposed to play acoustic but got lost somewhere between the main stage and the tea tent. Had to send a whole road crew looking for him. Now *that* was a needle in a haystack. [ROGER] Ha, yeah, and he probably didn't even have a cell phone back then. Just a vague sense of direction and perhaps a very strong cuppa. Simpler times. No algorithms trying to hide him. [SHANE] Exactly. So, for the independent artist listening… it really comes down to building that direct relationship. That connection. Owning that connection. Because everything else… is on borrowed land. [ROGER] Get your email list together, people. And make your website the hub, not just a link farm. Give people a reason to come to *you*. [KORKY] Diversify your income streams. Understand the technology, but do not become its unwitting servant. And for heaven's sake, read the terms and conditions. Every single one of them. [SHANE] Sage advice, gentlemen. Truly. Artists, you are the advocates for your own art. Nobody else is going to do it for you, not fully, not genuinely. You have to understand the landscape, adapt, and always, always keep building that direct bridge to the people who love what you do. That’s the only truly sustainable path. [SHANE] We’ve been talking artist development here on The Green Room. My thanks to Roger and Korky Tyson for joining me. We’ll be back next week with more on Musicians Advocate Radio dot org. Keep making music. Keep fighting the good fight.

The Green Room S05E12 — Artist Development

https://musiciansadvocate.org The modern music landscape is noisier and more complex than ever, but Here is the full transcript: [SHANE] Welcome back to The Green Room, on Musicians Advocate Radio, musiciansadvocate.org. It’s a Sunday here, another chance for us to talk about what really matters in this business… and what really gets ignored. Artist development, the business of getting heard… that’s our wheelhouse. Always has been. [ROGER] Always will be, Shane, because the landscape changes every five minutes, but the core problems? They just mutate. Still trying to get a fair shake, still trying to make a living, still trying to cut through the noise. Feels like more noise than ever these days, honestly. [SHANE] More noise, more algorithms… less clarity. It’s a puzzle, isn’t it? How to get your music out there, how to build a career in a world that seems designed to… well, to make it harder. Seems like you’ve been looking particularly contemplative today, Roger. You got that look. [ROGER] Just thinking about the old ways, man. The simplicity. You cut a record, you sent it to radio, you played gigs. Now it’s like… fifty different platforms, a hundred different metrics, and a thousand different gurus telling you to “monetize your personal brand” or something equally vague. [KORKY] If I may interject, gentlemen, because you’re both skirting around the periphery of a much larger, more systemic shift that is… well, it’s not just noise, Roger. It’s a paradigm quake. And it directly impacts everything an emerging artist attempts to do. [SHANE] Korky Tyson. I knew I felt a disturbance in the force. Glad you could make it, Korky. What deep truths have the algorithms whispered in your ear this week? Or is it more of a primal scream from the depths of Silicon Valley? [ROGER] Korky, man. Good to see you. Sounds like you’ve got something brewing. Another industry consolidation? Another streaming service pulling a fast one? Tell us it’s not another metadata debacle. Please. [KORKY] Worse, Roger. Much, much worse. We’re discussing the very essence of artistic creation and the means of its remuneration. The tectonic plates of entertainment are not merely shifting; they are grinding against each other with a force that threatens to destabilize the entire ecosystem, particularly for the nascent artist. [SHANE] Alright, Korky. Give it to us straight. What specific catastrophe is bubbling up from the digital underworld this time that musicians need to prepare for? Because catastrophe is usually your preamble. [KORKY] It’s artificial intelligence, gentlemen. But not in the simplistic terms of merely generating a song, though that is happening with alarming velocity. No, I refer to the *integration* of AI across every facet of content creation, distribution, and yes, *audience capture*. The ability of these models to not only create but also to *identify* and *exploit* trends with unprecedented speed and efficiency. And the financial implications for the human artist are… dire. [ROGER] So you’re saying AI is getting so good it’s not just making music, it’s figuring out what people *want* to hear, and then making that, too? Like a super-powered A&R, but without the coke habit and the terrible taste in shirts? [KORKY] Precisely, Roger. Imagine a system that analyzes millions of data points—listener preferences, chord progressions, lyrical themes, emotional responses, even neuro-linguistic patterns—and then generates content perfectly optimized for virality, for engagement, for repeat listens. And it can do so at scale. Infinitely. Without sleep, without ego, without demanding a royalty split beyond the initial infrastructure cost. [SHANE] So where does that leave the human musician, then… the person who spends years honing their craft, writing from their heart… pouring their soul into an album? Are we talking about a world where the human touch is just… a novelty? Or a luxury? [KORKY] It becomes a differentiator, Shane, but one that is increasingly difficult to monetize within the existing framework. If a platform can generate infinite variations of popular music at near-zero cost, the value of *your* individual track, which required weeks of blood, sweat, and emotional labor, diminishes rapidly in the marketplace. We've seen similar patterns in other creative industries, of course. My own experience, as you know, with the animated series… it was a chilling foretaste of what’s coming for music. [ROGER] Man, I remember when digital audio workstations first came out, people were worried it’d put studio musicians out of business. It changed things, sure, but musicians still played. This feels different, Korky. This feels like the machines are not just making the tools, they’re making the *art* itself. [KORKY] It’s fundamentally different, Roger. Those DAWs were instruments. This is… an autonomous creative entity. What does an artist do when the very concept of unique human expression is commodified and then mass-produced by an algorithm? The struggle for visibility, for fair compensation, for mere *attention*—already Herculean—becomes Sisyphean. [SHANE] So if the traditional avenues—streaming, major labels, social media feeds—are going to be flooded by AI-generated content… what’s the play? What’s the move for an artist who wants to keep creating, keep performing, keep connecting? How do they carve out a space? [KORKY] This is where the concept of *owning your audience* becomes not merely a shrewd business strategy, but a fundamental act of artistic self-preservation. You cannot cede your relationship with your listeners to an algorithm. You cannot allow platforms to be the sole gatekeepers of your visibility. [ROGER] Owning your audience… so, like, direct email lists? Patreons? Physical merch? Going back to the old school? Seems ironic we’re fighting future tech with… the past. [KORKY] It's not ironic, Roger, it’s cyclical. It’s about leveraging the present without becoming beholden to its inherent vulnerabilities. Email lists, sure, but also direct community building. Discord servers, localized fan clubs, bespoke experiences, exclusive content delivered directly to your most ardent supporters. It's about cultivating relationships that transcend the ephemeral trends dictated by AI. Build your own garden, cultivate your own community. [SHANE] And that community… that’s where the value is. That’s where the money still flows, right? Because people will pay for authenticity. They’ll pay for a connection with a real human being, a real story. Even if an AI can make a thousand perfect songs… it can’t tell *your* story. [KORKY] Precisely, Shane. The authentic narrative, the unique personal journey—these are the remaining bastions of human artistic value. While an AI can synthesize emotions, it cannot *feel* them in a manner that resonates with the deep human need for shared experience. But this requires a significant shift in perspective for the artist. Less reliance on passive distribution, more on active engagement and direct value proposition. [ROGER] It's like… going back to the old touring model, right? You play the small towns, you meet the people, you sell the CDs out of the trunk of your car. You build it up one fan at a time. It’s just… now you’re doing it online, too. Maybe even more online than in person. [SHANE] Yeah, remember that time… back at the Monterey Pop Festival, 1967? The Airplane played, the Dead played, Hendrix set his guitar on fire… and there were these little booths, off to the side, where artists were trying to sell hand-printed manifestos, silk-screened posters… building direct connection. No gatekeepers. Just direct-to-fan, analogue style. [ROGER] Man, Monterey. What a lineup. Remember the stories about Ravi Shankar playing for three hours, just hypnotizing everyone? And then Pete Townshend smashing his guitar and being like, “Alright, next!” It was all about the live experience, the unique moment. And people showed up. They showed up for that. [KORKY] Fascinating historical tangent, gentlemen, but perhaps we can return to the imminent future. The point stands: the unique, live, human experience and the direct relationship with an audience will be the artist's strongest shields against algorithmic commodification. But it demands a strategic, proactive approach. Artists must become not just creators, but also community managers, digital strategists, and direct marketers. [SHANE] So the EPK, the electronic press kit, still matters, but it’s not just for labels anymore. It’s for booking agents who are looking for artists with built-in audiences. It’s for your fans, who want to feel like they’re getting inside access to your journey. [ROGER] And that means, artists have to get savvy about data collection, right? Not just looking at Spotify streams, but understanding *who* is listening, *where* they are, and *how* to reach them directly. Not just relying on platform analytics, but building their own databases. [KORKY] Exactly. The data you generate must be *your* data. Not Facebook’s, not TikTok’s, not Spotify’s. Because those platforms, while useful for exposure, ultimately control the spigot. And when AI enters the fray, it changes the economics of that spigot dramatically. You need to control your own water source. [SHANE] It’s a sobering thought, Korky. But also… a challenging one. A call to action for every artist out there. To lean into what makes them uniquely human, to build those relationships directly, and to never stop learning about the shifts happening under their feet. It’s more work, perhaps, but it’s also… more control. [ROGER] More control, less reliance on some exec in a glass tower making decisions based on spreadsheets. Sounds like a win to me, even if it’s a lot more hustle. Always has been hustle, though. Nothing new there. Just a different kind of hustle. [KORKY] Indeed, Roger. The struggle for autonomy and fair compensation is eternal. AI merely introduces a new, formidable opponent. But knowledge is power, and adaptation is survival. My hope, albeit a cautious one, is that artists, once informed, will adapt with the ingenuity for which they are renowned. [SHANE] We can only hope. And keep talking about it, right here, on The Green Room. Korky Tyson, always a pleasure to have your… uniquely Korky… perspective. Even when it makes us want to go live in a cabin in the woods. [ROGER] Thanks, Korky. Always appreciate the download, man. Even if it freaks me out a little. Makes me want to go back to soldering tube amps and just ignoring the internet. [KORKY] A tempting prospect, Roger. A very tempting prospect indeed. [SHANE] For now, though, we’ll stick around and keep advocating for musicians right here. Thanks for joining us for The Green Room. We'll be back next week with more on how to navigate this wild, wild world. Stay creative, stay smart, stay real. From all of us at Musicians Advocate Radio, musiciansadvocate.org, we'll see you next time.

https://musiciansadvocate.org This episode dives deep into the shifting landscape for independent artists, exploring how the increasing volume of content and the rise of AI-generated media are impacting authenticity and discoverability. The hosts and their guest discuss why traditional strategies for promotion are becoming insufficient in an "algorithmic deluge." • Learn why the humble EPK is no longer enough to stand out in a crowded, AI-assisted market. • Discover how the music industry is grappling with AI-generated artists and their implications for human creativity. • Understand why "owning your audience" and building direct connections is more critical than ever. • Explore new strategies for delivering value and fostering genuine community beyond standard social media platforms. Here is the full transcript: [SHANE] Welcome back to The Green Room, on Musicians Advocate Radio, musiciansadvocate.org. Always good to have you with us here, exploring the path for the independent artist, and those who aspire to… well, to simply make good music, and be heard. [ROGER] Or make *any* music, and be heard. The bar is getting lower for creation, but the noise floor for discovery is getting higher. It’s a paradox. [SHANE] Indeed. A paradox wrapped in a conundrum, Roger. You know, it reminds me of… what was that year… when the main stage at the Reading Festival in '79 had that massive power surge right as Peter Gabriel was about to drop into "Solsbury Hill"… and they had to delay for an hour because the entire stage lighting grid went dark? [ROGER] Oh, I remember that one. That wasn't just a surge, Shane. That was a generator meltdown. They had to haul in a backup from a nearby farm show, which was running off a tractor engine. The entire intro to "San Jacinto" was played to the rhythmic chugging of a John Deere. Pure chaos. [SHANE] Pure artistry, if you ask me. Made the experience… unique. And speaking of unique experiences, we have our friend, our esteemed colleague, Mr. Korky Tyson back with us. Korky, always a pleasure to have your… unique perspective. [KORKY] Gentlemen, always a delight to join you in this… digital salon. One might even say a necessary intervention, given the seismic shifts occurring beneath the very foundations of our industry. You discuss uniqueness, Shane, but the very concept is under siege. [ROGER] There he is. Always with the theatrical flair, Korky. What deep-seated societal collapse are you here to warn us about today? Is it the return of the mp3? [KORKY] Roger, please. The mp3 is a quaint relic, a mere footnote in the annals of format wars. We are facing something far more profound. We are, I contend, at the precipice of an authenticity crisis driven by… the algorithmic deluge. [SHANE] The algorithmic deluge. That sounds… appropriately dramatic. Tell us more, Korky. What new torment is the independent artist facing from the digital gods? [KORKY] Well, you both frequently discuss the importance of the Electronic Press Kit, the EPK, yes? How critical it is for artists to present themselves professionally, to stand out to agents, promoters, labels. That advice, while sound in principle, is rapidly becoming… insufficient. [ROGER] Insufficient? Korky, an EPK is still the bare minimum. You can’t get booked without one. You can’t get a decent review without one. Are you saying we should go back to sending physical CDs and glossy eight-by-tens through the mail? Because I’ve still got my old Jiffy bag supply from ’98. [KORKY] No, Roger, you misunderstand. The *form* of the EPK persists, but its *efficacy* is diminishing. The sheer volume of content being generated, much of it now AI-assisted, means that the traditional components of an EPK—your bio, your press photos, your music samples, even your testimonials—are increasingly indistinguishable from a mountain of other, algorithmically-optimized content. Imagine a million perfectly crafted bios, all hitting the right keywords. How do you cut through that? [SHANE] Ah… the signal-to-noise ratio. It’s always been an issue, but you’re suggesting the noise itself is becoming… intelligent. [KORKY] Precisely. Consider the burgeoning trend of AI-generated artist profiles, even AI-generated *artists*. I’m not just talking about deepfakes or virtual influencers; I mean fully autonomous creative entities being developed by studios, complete with backstories, entire discographies, and meticulously crafted social media personas, all designed to appeal to specific demographics. It’s a battle not just for attention, but for *authenticity*. My last consulting gig, I lost a deal to an AI-generated character, an entire narrative and sound profile, just before the WGA strike. They said it was… more pliable. Less demanding. [ROROGER] Pliable. Less demanding. That’s the dream, isn't it? For the industry, anyway. No ego, no rider, just pure content generation on demand. So, what’s an artist supposed to do? Develop an AI to compete with the AI? Outsource their emotions to an algorithm? [KORKY] Not necessarily. My point is that the *human element* becomes paradoxically more valuable, yet harder to convey. Your EPK needs to scream "human" in a world saturated with simulated humanity. It's no longer enough to be good; you have to be *unmistakably* you. And that means rethinking how you leverage your social reach, how you "own your audience." [SHANE] Owning your audience… that’s a phrase we’ve championed for years. Moving beyond just follower counts, getting direct contact info, building genuine community. Is that becoming harder too, Korky? Or more crucial? [KORKY] More crucial, Shane, and simultaneously more elusive through traditional means. The platforms, the social media giants, they are *not* your friends. They are not designed to foster your direct connection; they are designed to intermediate it, to monetize *their* access to *your* audience. Their algorithms are constantly shifting, favoring paid promotion, ephemeral content, or increasingly, content that aligns with their corporate partners’ agendas. Organic reach is a diminishing commodity. [ROGER] So, the old advice of "build a great website, get an email list, be active on social"… that’s now what, just a starting point for an existential crisis? [KORKY] It’s a necessary foundation, Roger, but it must be built upon with a hyper-focus on *direct, unmediated connection*. Think about how you’re delivering value *outside* the feed. Are you offering exclusive content via email? Are you building a Discord server that's truly engaged, not just a broadcast channel? Are you cultivating micro-communities around specific interests or themes related to your music? The goal isn't just to be seen; it's to be *chosen*, actively and repeatedly. [SHANE] Chosen. That's a powerful distinction. It shifts the burden from the algorithm to the artist's ingenuity. It means being more than just a musician… you're a community manager, a content strategist, an experience curator. [ROGER] And a therapist, probably. With all the constant hustling involved. So, let’s get practical here, Korky. What’s one tangible thing an artist can do to make their EPK scream "human" and build this direct connection in a meaningful way? Besides, you know, not using AI to write their bio, which seems like a no-brainer. [KORKY] Excellent question, Roger, and one that cuts to the core. Beyond the obvious, which yes, is to ensure your voice is authentically *yours* in all written materials—don't let an algorithm polish out your quirks—I would say: prioritize video. And not just any video. Short-form, intimate, unscripted glimpses into your creative process, your personality, your struggles, your triumphs. These need not be high-production. They need to be *real*. [SHANE] Real. So, not just the polished music video, but the messy bits too. The outtakes. The false starts. The "I just wrote this riff, what do you think?" moments. [KORKY] Exactly, Shane. The imperfections become the distinguishing characteristic. And crucially, find ways to distribute these directly. Embed them in your email newsletters. Offer them as exclusive perks to patrons. Create a dedicated section on your own website, not just linking out to YouTube or TikTok. The goal is to make people feel like they’re getting a peek behind the velvet rope, not just another piece of feed content. It's about scarcity of genuine interaction in an age of infinite, artificial content. [ROGER] Scarcity. That’s an interesting angle. Most people are just trying to get *more* out there. You’re saying less, but better directed? Like when bands used to press limited run vinyl for fans who showed up to specific gigs. Same principle, just digital. [KORKY] The principle is indeed analogous, Roger. It’s about creating value through perceived exclusivity and direct connection, bypassing the gatekeepers. And remember, the platforms may prioritize their own monetization, but they still thrive on user engagement. If you can cultivate a highly engaged, loyal audience *off* their main feeds, you then have leverage to direct them *back* to your platform, your store, your direct communication channels. [SHANE] Leverage. That’s the word. And it’s a constant battle for leverage for the artist. It always has been. So, the takeaway here is… don't just put your EPK out there and hope. Make it sing *you*. And then, build bridges directly to your audience, ensuring those bridges are robust enough to bypass any algorithmic dams the platforms decide to erect. [ROGER] And make sure your guitar sound is unique enough that an AI can't just synthesize it from a prompt. Or that you're using some obscure vintage amp Korky probably doesn't even know about, so they can't train on it. Like the Ampeg B-15 Portaflex from the early 60s, a bass amp often used for guitar in the studio for that warm, round tone. Nobody’s thinking of that for AI training data. Yet. [KORKY] Roger, I assure you, my knowledge of vintage amplification, while perhaps not as encyclopedic as your own, is hardly… provincial. But your point about distinctiveness holds. It’s about finding the human signature, in every aspect. [SHANE] The human signature. I like that, Korky. Despite your ridiculous name. Always appreciate your insights, my friend. Thank you for joining us again here in The Green Room. [KORKY] My pleasure, gentlemen. Until next time. [SHANE] That was Korky Tyson, our industry insider, sharing his perspective on navigating the new digital landscape. Good stuff. So, for all you artists out there, trying to make your way… remember, it's about being undeniably you, in a world that increasingly wants you to be undeniably generic. Build those direct connections. Own your audience. It's the only way to truly advocate for yourself. [ROGER] And check your mixes on a cheap pair of earbuds, not just studio monitors. Because that's how most people will hear your stuff now. Another critical tip the AI won't tell you. [SHANE] A fine practical point, Roger. Always appreciated. We’ll be back next week with more on Musicians Advocate Radio, musiciansadvocate.org. Stay tuned.

   The Green Room S05E10 — AI-driven

https://musiciansadvocate.org This episode delves into the modern musician's struggle for visibility and opportunity in a crowded digital landscape, where the line between legitimate help and predatory exploitation is increasingly blurred. Our hosts uncover the alarming reality behind new "AI-driven A&R accelerators" and how they might be capitalizing on artists' intellectual property. • Exploring the challenges artists face trying to get heard in an "algorithm-first" industry. • Unpacking the deceptive promises of new AI-powered artist discovery platforms like "Audience Nexus." • Learning how signing up for these platforms can grant them perpetual, royalty-free rights to your music. • Discovering the chilling truth: some platforms use uploaded material to train generative AI models, turning artists' creativity into feedstock for future AI-generated music. • Debating the implications of code eating art and what artists can do to protect themselves. Here is the full transcript: [SHANE] Welcome back… to The Green Room. It's Sunday morning, folks, and here we are… still turning the wheels… talking about the grind. The never-ending search for that elusive thing… getting heard. Getting seen. Getting a leg up in a… well, in an industry that doesn't always seem to want to make it easy. [ROGER] Easy? Shane, easy ain’t in the vocabulary of a working musician. Never has been. Now it’s just… louder. More channels, less signal. Everyone yelling into the void, hoping the algorithm picks them out of the digital ocean. And usually, the algorithm’s just looking for the next data point to sell. [SHANE] Mm. Louder, yes. And… perhaps… more… predatory. It’s hard to tell the difference sometimes… between a legitimate opportunity and… well, just another digital tar pit for your intellectual property. [ROGER] Ain’t that the truth. I was just reading about this new platform, they call it "Sonic Scout" or something. Claims to use AI to "discover" unsigned talent. Sounds like a fancy way to get a hundred thousand demos for free and then sell the aggregate data to someone else. [KORKY] Actually, Roger, you’re not entirely off the mark, but you’re understating the insidious nature of it. It’s far worse than simple data aggregation. [SHANE] And there he is. Korky Tyson… just in time to rain on our parade of mild cynicism with… presumably… a typhoon of profound, deeply researched despair. [ROGER] Speak of the devil… or the oracle, depending on the week. What fresh hell have you unearthed for us, Korky? Something about blockchain NFTs for your dog’s consciousness? [KORKY] Ha ha, very droll, Roger. No, this is far more immediate, far more pressing for the working musician. You mentioned "Sonic Scout," Roger? The actual name is "Audience Nexus" — part of the new wave of what they’re calling "AI-driven A&R accelerators." It launched quietly last month, and it's already garnered significant investment from several major holding companies you’d recognize. [SHANE] Audience Nexus… sounds like a particularly virulent strain of marketing jargon. What exactly does it *do*? Beyond "accelerating" someone’s wallet, I mean. [KORKY] Precisely, Shane. On the surface, it purports to be a meritocratic gateway. Artists upload their tracks, their EPK — or rather, their "Digital Talent Profile," as they term it — and the AI analyzes everything from harmonic complexity and lyrical themes to perceived emotional impact and commercial viability based on predictive analytics of current consumption trends. [ROGER] Predictive analytics… so it tells you if your song sounds like the last viral TikTok hit. Great. Because what we need is more homogenization. [KORKY] It goes further, Roger. It then promises to "match" artists with industry professionals: A&R reps, sync licensing agents, even potential collaborators or producers, all based on the AI's assessment. Sounds utopian, doesn't it? A truly unbiased, data-driven approach to artist discovery. [SHANE] It always sounds utopian… until you read the fine print. And then it usually turns out… it’s a meat grinder for metadata. [KORKY] And intellectual property. My friends, the terms of service for "Audience Nexus" are a masterclass in obfuscation. By uploading your material, you essentially grant them an irrevocable, worldwide, perpetual, royalty-free license to use, reproduce, modify, adapt, publish, translate, create derivative works from, distribute, perform, and display your content in any form, media, or technology now known or hereafter developed. [ROGER] Wait, wait, wait. Say that last part again. Royalty-free? Forever? They own your stuff just for uploading it? That’s… that’s beyond predatory. That’s outright theft. [KORKY] Not theft, Roger, because you "agreed" to it. You clicked the box. And here’s the kicker, the truly chilling part for me, given my… recent personal encounter with the voracious appetite of algorithms. The terms also include a clause stating they can use your uploaded material, and the *data derived from your creative process*, to train their generative AI models. [SHANE] Ah. I see. So… it’s not just a discovery platform… it’s a… a feedstock. For future AI-generated music. [KORKY] Exactly, Shane. They harvest your creativity, your unique stylistic markers, your lyrical sensibilities, your harmonic progressions, not just to find you a deal, but to teach their AI how to *mimic* and *replicate* those very elements. They’re building an arsenal of AI-created music, trained on the blood, sweat, and tears of aspiring artists, which will then compete with those very artists. Imagine submitting your magnum opus, only for the AI to learn from it, create a commercially viable derivative, and then the platform pitches *that* to a sync agent instead of yours because the AI version is royalty-free to them. [ROGER] That’s… that’s disgusting. That’s pure cannibalism. And I thought the old record labels were bad for giving you the boilerplate 360 deal where they owned your soul. At least they had to *pay* you something, eventually. [SHANE] And that’s the difference, isn’t it? The human element. However exploitative, there was still a… a vestige of human connection. Now it’s just… code eating art. [KORKY] Indeed. My own experience with an AI character being given a major animated role… a role I had spent years developing a voice for, a character I felt a deep personal connection to… only for a synthesized voice to replicate it. It taught me the absolute ruthlessness of this new paradigm. They see artists not as collaborators, but as data points, as training material. And this "Audience Nexus" is just another manifestation of that. [ROGER] So what’s the counter? How do musicians avoid this kind of… digital organ harvesting? Is it just never upload anything anywhere ever again? Because that’s not really feasible for getting heard. [SHANE] No, it’s not feasible. The digital world is… it’s where we live now. But the answer, I think, lies in… a very old-school concept. And that’s… ownership. Real ownership. [KORKY] Shane hits upon the fundamental truth. You must maintain ownership of your intellectual property at all costs. And you must build your *own* audience, on platforms *you* control, or at least platforms where the terms are transparent and fair. [ROGER] Like… a mailing list? We’re back to newsletters? [SHANE] Precisely, Roger. A direct email list. A community you cultivate yourself. A website that you own. That’s your sanctuary. That’s your home base. Every other platform — Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, even Spotify — those are just distribution channels. They’re borrowed land. And they can change the rules… or the rent… at any time. [KORKY] Consider the rise and fall of various social media darlings. Remember Vine? Periscope? Even MySpace, for those of us who recall the pre-Facebook era with nostalgic pangs. All were once epicenters of artist discovery, only to pivot, dissolve, or be acquired, leaving artists scrambling to reconnect with their audience. [ROGER] MySpace… now *there* was a time. Remember when you could actually customize your page? Had your Top 8 friends, could embed your music player right there. Felt like *your* space. [SHANE] It did. It did feel like that. And those Top 8… it was a real status symbol. I remember the year 2005… driving to Bonnaroo, and every single band we heard on the radio on the way down there… had a MySpace page that was blowing up. Bands like… well, like The Arcade Fire… they were still quite new then, but their MySpace was *the* place to hear them. No algorithmic gatekeepers. Just a simple friend count and a profile. [ROGER] Arcade Fire, yeah. Back when festivals actually felt like discovery, not just a lineup of established acts. You could wander into a tent at, say, All Points West… that was 2008, right? And just stumble upon something amazing. Now it feels like everyone's been focus-grouped into existence before they even hit the main stage. [KORKY] That’s the modern dilemma, isn’t it? The democratization of distribution has coincided with the centralization of discovery algorithms and the commodification of creative data. So, what’s an artist to do? [SHANE] Beyond the mailing list… it’s about having your own professional hub. A solid Electronic Press Kit, or EPK. And not just a folder full of JPEGs and MP3s. [ROGER] Oh, the EPK. Still the bane of many a musician's existence. I still get links to broken Dropbox folders full of blurry phone pics. [KORKY] Exactly. An EPK isn't just a resume, it's your entire professional identity encapsulated. It needs to be coherent, consistent, and compelling. High-resolution photos, a concise bio, links to your best music on platforms where you *control* the narrative, not ones that control *you*. Professional videos, press clippings, testimonials, contact information. And crucially, a clear rights statement. Don't leave any ambiguity. [SHANE] A good EPK… it's your calling card. It’s what you send when you’re booking gigs, when you’re pitching to blogs, when you’re applying for grants. And it needs to live on your own website, linked clearly, cleanly, consistently. Not behind a proprietary login on some platform that changes its terms every quarter. [ROGER] And the music itself, of course. Quality recordings. Seems obvious, but you’d be surprised. Still hear demos that sound like they were recorded in a bathroom with a dollar-store mic. Invest in your craft, people. If you’re asking someone to listen, give them something worth their time. [KORKY] Indeed. The basics still matter more than any ephemeral digital trend. The quality of your art, the integrity of your professional presentation, and the directness of your connection with your audience. These are the bulwarks against the algorithmic tidal wave. [SHANE] The basics. Always comes back to the basics. Build something real. Own what you build. Connect directly with the people who love what you do. Don't let the platforms own your relationship with your fans. And for goodness sake… read the fine print. Assume every "free" service that promises to "discover" you… is actually looking to discover something *from* you. [ROGER] And usually, that something is your soul… or at least your intellectual property rights. [KORKY] A very apt summary, Roger. A very apt summary indeed. [SHANE] Korky Tyson, always a pleasure to have your… uniquely unvarnished perspective. [KORKY] The truth, Shane, is rarely varnished. It tends to be rather stark. [SHANE] It does. And we appreciate that starkness here. Roger, thanks for keeping us grounded. [ROGER] Always a pleasure. Next time, maybe we’ll talk about tube amplifiers that *don’t* steal your data. [SHANE] Now there’s a topic. For now… for Korky Tyson, for Roger, I’m Shane. You’ve been listening to The Green Room, right here on Musicians Advocate Radio. Stay smart out there, folks. And keep making that music. We’ll see you next week.

The Green Room S05E09 — AI and the

https://musiciansadvocate.org Korky Tyson joins the Green Room to discuss the accelerating impact of Here is the full transcript: [SHANE] Welcome back to The Green Room, on Musicians Advocate Radio, musiciansadvocate.org. Just two lifers talking shop, trying to make sense of this… wild ride. I'm Shane, as always joined by my co-pilot, the analog-digital guru himself, Roger. [ROGER] Good to be here, Shane. Good to be here. Another week, another round of folks trying to figure out how to get their music heard without losing their shirt, their soul, or both. [SHANE] Precisely. And speaking of shirt-losing… we've got a special guest dropping in today, fresh from the… well, the digital trenches, I suppose. Korky Tyson is with us. Korky, good to have you back in the room. [KORKY] Shane, Roger, it’s always a distinct pleasure, even when the news I bear is less than… buoyant. Though I suspect you two grizzled veterans are well-equipped to handle the tempest. [ROGER] Tempest, Korky? Sounds like you’ve been reading the tea leaves again, or maybe just too much of that quarterly earnings report for Big Tech. What's got your knickers in a twist this week? [SHANE] Roger… be kind. Korky usually has a point… somewhere… beneath the… baroque prose. But I am curious. You sounded… particularly exercised… when you called in. [KORKY] Exercised is an understatement, Shane. I’ve just returned from a rather illuminating, if altogether disheartening, industry summit. The air was thick with the scent of venture capital, artisanal coffee, and… algorithmic dread. The topic du jour, predictably, was the accelerating deployment of generative AI across all facets of content creation. But what’s particularly chilling for the working musician, the independent artist, is how these advancements are now being leveraged to directly supplant human creativity at the most fundamental levels of artist development and revenue generation. [ROGER] Supplant human creativity… is that a fancy way of saying they’re finally getting around to fully automating the Muzak factory? Because honestly, that’s been coming for a while. [KORKY] No, Roger, this isn't about elevator music. This is about the very mechanisms that allow an artist to gain traction, to build an audience, to monetize their work. We're talking about platforms now actively promoting AI-generated music as if it were emerging talent, offering "curated playlists" that are nothing more than algorithmic outputs, and, perhaps most insidious, offering AI "ghost producers" that can create entire tracks for a pittance, then claim a percentage of the— [SHANE] Whoa. Hold on, Korky. So, you're saying a platform… a streaming platform, say… is now creating its *own* content… and pushing it… ahead of human artists? Is that what I’m hearing? Because that sounds like… well, that sounds like the ultimate conflict of interest. [KORKY] Precisely, Shane. It's not merely a conflict of interest; it's an existential threat to the concept of artist development as we've known it. Imagine a new artist struggling to get their first thousand streams, only to find that the platform's own algorithm is actively prioritizing an AI-generated sound-alike that costs the platform nothing in royalties to a human creator. These AI creations can be endlessly tweaked, genre-bent, and branded to perfectly fit market trends, all without the pesky demands of creative expression, fair compensation, or… you know… a pulse. [ROGER] So the big question then, from the perspective of a musician trying to break through, is how do you even compete? If the house is playing with loaded dice, and they’ve got their own robot dealers… what’s the strategy? Do you just… make better music? Which, let’s be honest, is always the goal, but sometimes better music doesn’t get heard even without AI in the mix. [KORKY] That’s the crux, Roger. The metrics of "better music" are themselves being co-opted. What constitutes a "hit" or "trending" can now be engineered, not discovered. My own experience, as you know, has been a stark illustration of this shift. I lost a rather significant deal, a sync placement for a major ad campaign, to an AI-generated jingle. Not because it was superior, mind you, but because it was infinitely malleable, endlessly reproducible, and utterly devoid of royalty obligations beyond the initial license fee. The creative director openly admitted it was a "cost-effective solution" that could be iterated on the fly. That's… that's what we're up against. [SHANE] That's… that's sobering, Korky. It puts a very personal face on what can feel like… a distant, abstract threat. So, if the platforms are doing this… if they're incentivized to promote their own… soulless creations… what's an artist to do? I mean, we've always talked about owning your audience, right? Building direct relationships. Is that… the only way forward now? To bypass the gatekeepers entirely? [KORKY] It's becoming increasingly vital, Shane. The platforms are no longer neutral conduits; they are increasingly competitors. Artists must view them as tools, not as benevolent partners in their career development. This means redoubling efforts on direct fan engagement, building robust email lists, leveraging personal websites, creating exclusive content for subscribers— [ROGER] So back to basics then, huh? Like the old days of fan clubs and mailing physical postcards. Except now it's Patreon and Discord servers instead of a P.O. box. Funny how technology cycles back to the same core principles when the money gets funny. I remember when Napster broke, everyone thought the sky was falling. Then iTunes came along and made it somewhat legitimate, then streaming, and now this. Every cycle, the artist seems to be the one holding the short straw. [SHANE] Roger’s right. It does feel like a recurring pattern. Every new paradigm promises liberation, then delivers… a new set of shackles. But Korky, you're talking about direct engagement. That's labor-intensive. And artists are already… stretched thin. Building an EPK, booking gigs, rehearsing, recording, managing social media, trying to make rent… now they also have to be master marketers and community managers… just to compete with a bot? [KORKY] The demands are indeed escalating, Shane. But the alternative is to become collateral damage in the algorithmic wars. Artists must differentiate themselves, not just through their music, but through their authentic connection with their audience. No AI can replicate the genuine interaction, the shared experience of a live performance, the personal story behind a song. This is where the human artist retains an undeniable edge. Their unique voice, their personality, their narrative—these are the elements that AI can mimic, but not genuinely embody. [ROGER] And that’s where an artist's brand really becomes important, isn’t it? Not just the music itself, but *who you are* as an artist. Your story. Your stage presence. The way you talk to your fans online. It’s all part of the package now, even more so if your music can be mimicked by a neural network. You gotta give people a reason to connect with *you*, not just your sound. [KORKY] Precisely. And this is where strategic deployment of resources becomes critical. Understanding how to use the *right* tools to amplify your authentic voice, rather than allowing yourself to be subsumed by the platforms' own agendas. Investing in professional EPKs that highlight your unique selling points, targeting specific fan communities, even exploring Web3 technologies that offer artists greater control over their intellectual property and direct revenue streams, imperfect as they currently are. It’s about building a robust ecosystem around your artistry, rather than relying on a single, increasingly hostile, platform. [SHANE] So, Korky, what’s the immediate, actionable advice then? If I’m a young artist listening right now… feeling that existential dread you mentioned… what’s the first step to fortify myself against this… robotic onslaught? [KORKY] The immediate step, Shane, is vigilance and diversification. Do not put all your creative eggs in one algorithmic basket. Actively cultivate multiple channels for your music and your message. Do not neglect your email list. It remains one of the few truly owned communication channels. Engage directly with your fans, ask for their feedback, build a true community. And critically, educate yourself on the evolving landscape of AI. Understand its capabilities, but also its limitations. Do not shy away from incorporating AI *as a tool* to assist in tasks like scheduling or content ideation, but never surrender your core creative identity to it. It is a tool, not a partner, and certainly not a replacement. [ROGER] Right. Use it to write your social media posts, maybe, but not your chorus. Or don't even use it for that. Just be a human. Connect. Like Korky said, that's the one thing they can't replicate. Yet. [SHANE] Roger, ever the optimist… for a moment. But I think that's the key takeaway, Korky. It's about… human connection. And being smart. Being strategically human in an increasingly automated world. It's tough… but it's what we’ve always advocated for anyway, isn’t it? Owning your narrative. Owning your audience. It just feels more urgent now. [KORKY] Far more urgent, Shane. The clock is ticking, and the machines are learning at an exponential rate. But authentic artistry, rooted in genuine human experience, still possesses a resonance that no algorithm can truly replicate. Yet, as Roger said. [ROGER] I remember back at the Isle of Wight Festival in '70… everyone thought Jimi Hendrix's guitar tones were going to be the end of human drummers, what with all the feedback and noise. Turns out, drummers are still doing fine. Not quite the same, but the anxiety was there. Maybe this is just the next iteration of that. [SHANE] A bit of a stretch, Roger, but I get your point about the recurring anxiety. The human element, the soul of the music… that’s what we’re trying to protect and nurture here. Korky, thank you for shining that… rather unsettling light on things. Always illuminating. [KORKY] My pleasure, gentlemen. Keep fighting the good fight. [SHANE] We will. Korky Tyson, our industry insider, always a thought-provoker. And Roger, always keeping me honest with those… historical parallels. [ROGER] Just trying to keep things in perspective, Shane. The more things change, the more the machines try to make things the same. [SHANE] Indeed. So to all the artists out there, trying to build their careers, trying to get heard… keep being you. Keep connecting. That’s your superpower. That’s all the time we have for this segment of The Green Room. Stay tuned, we’ll be right back with more Musicians Advocate Radio, musiciansadvocate.org.

The Green Room S05E08 — Sunday Aug 23

https://musiciansadvocate.org This episode dives deep into the ever-shifting landscape of the music industry, Here is the full transcript: [SHANE] Welcome back to The Green Room here on Musicians Advocate Radio, musiciansadvocate.org. Always good to have you with us. You know, we talk a lot about the shifts in the industry, the seismic plates moving underneath us all the time… and how that impacts the working musician. It's a conversation that never really ends because the ground never really stops shifting. [ROGER] No kidding, Shane. Used to be you just needed a demo tape and a good gig, maybe a band photo that wasn't taken in your mom's basement. Now it's like you need to be a full-stack developer, a social media guru, a video editor, and a sound engineer, all before you even play your first chord. And that’s before we even talk about the music itself. [SHANE] Indeed. The music… that’s still supposed to be the core, isn't it? The reason we're all here. But the path to getting that music heard, to connecting with an audience, to actually building something that resembles a career… that path seems to get more convoluted, more obscured by algorithms and platforms and… well, everything, with each passing year. It used to be A&R, right? Artist and Repertoire. Now it's… what is it, Roger? Algorithm and Re-post? [ROGER] More like "Algorithm and Regret," if you ask me. I mean, think about it. You spend all this time honing your craft, writing the songs, perfecting your sound… and then you’re supposed to learn TikTok dances to get noticed? It just feels like a completely different skill set, a different *mindset* entirely, that a lot of truly brilliant musicians just aren't wired for. And why should they be? Their job is to create. [SHANE] And that’s exactly it. The focus has been diverted. It feels like the industry, the machine, has offloaded all the development work onto the artist. The labels used to invest in talent, they’d nurture artists, help them find their voice, build their brand… give them the breathing room to grow. Now, if you’re not already a fully-formed, self-generating content machine with a pre-existing viral hit, good luck even getting a meeting. [ROGER] I remember when Elektra signed The Cars, they didn't have a hit. They had a great sound, great songs, sure, but they were *developed*. Same with Queen on EMI. These days, if you’re not already charting on some obscure streaming platform in Uzbekistan, nobody looks twice. It’s like they expect you to arrive with a million followers and a full marketing budget already in place. [SHANE] Which brings us to the ever-present question: how do you, as an artist, navigate this new landscape? How do you cut through the noise? Because there's a lot of noise. And a lot of… artificial noise, too, these days. Roger, you were telling me earlier about some of the more… *interesting* developments in the digital realm. [ROGER] Oh, you mean the latest round of digital snake oil? Or the new ways platforms are changing the rules mid-game? Yeah, it's a never-ending saga. Every week it feels like there’s a new streaming platform promising better payouts, or a new social media trend you *have* to jump on, or some AI tool that's going to write your next hit. Most of it's just distraction, designed to keep you on their ecosystem, not actually help you build a career. It's an attention economy, and artists are just the bait. [SHANE] Hmm. "Bait." That’s a good word for it. And on that very bait-and-switch topic, I understand we have a special guest joining us today to shed some light on the deeper currents at play. Our esteemed industry prognosticator, a man who sees around corners and usually tells us exactly where we’re going to trip next… Korky Tyson. Korky, welcome to The Green Room. [KORKY] Shane, Roger, always a distinct pleasure to join you both in this veritable crucible of truth. You speak of bait, Roger, and indeed the metaphor is apt. But what if the bait itself is becoming… synthetic? We are witnessing, gentlemen, a profound re-calibration of value within the creative industries. And yes, it absolutely impacts the musician who simply wants to share their art. [ROGER] Oh boy, Korky’s in deep. What's the latest grim forecast, Korky? Is AI going to start writing entire albums and touring them as holograms next week? [KORKY] Roger, your prognostication is less grim than prescient. The development you speak of is not merely on the horizon, it is already here. Not fully matured, perhaps, but certainly gestating. What I’m referring to is the escalating trend of AI-generated and AI-augmented content taking a larger, and frankly, more profitable, slice of the cultural pie. Consider the proliferation of AI-generated music tracks on streaming platforms – often designed to fill background music needs, sure, but they are still monetized, still taking up bandwidth, and still diverting listener attention and algorithmic favor away from human-created work. [SHANE] So, Korky, you're talking about… essentially a flood of machine-made content that further dilutes the pool, making it even harder for a human artist to be discovered? [KORKY] Precisely, Shane. But it's more insidious than mere dilution. It’s a redefinition of the creative baseline. Major studios, film and television producers, advertising agencies… they are increasingly exploring AI for everything from scoring to concept art to even generating entire narrative arcs. I myself, as you know, lost a lucrative deal last year for a voiceover project to an AI-generated character. A character! It had a voice, an identity, a… *presence*… that was entirely synthetic. The cost savings were deemed too significant to ignore. [ROGER] Well, I suppose if the cost savings are there, the bean counters are going to go for it. But that really stings, Korky. I'm sorry to hear that. So, what does this mean for the songwriter, the band struggling to get noticed? Are they supposed to just throw up their hands? [KORKY] Not at all, Roger. Quite the contrary. It necessitates a strategic pivot, an embrace of what remains uniquely human and irreplaceable. The emotional resonance, the raw vulnerability, the serendipitous imperfection that defines true artistic expression – these are qualities AI, for all its sophistication, struggles to replicate authentically. The challenge, then, is to amplify these human elements, to make them the very cornerstone of your artistic offering. And to connect directly with your audience on a profound level, bypassing the algorithms that are increasingly populated by the synthesized. [SHANE] Bypassing the algorithms… that sounds like the old punk rock ethos, Korky. Do it yourself. Build your own scene. Create your own direct pipeline to the listener. [KORKY] Indeed, Shane. The more the platforms become a quagmire of AI-generated noise and fleeting trends, the more vital it becomes for artists to cultivate direct relationships. An email list, a personal community, a Patreon of dedicated patrons – these are the new bastions of artistic sustainability. Because the platforms, remember, are not truly interested in artist development. They are interested in engagement metrics and ad revenue. They want you on their hamster wheel. [ROGER] And they’ll keep changing the speed of that wheel, too. I mean, remember when MySpace was the big thing? Everyone had to be on MySpace. Then Facebook came along. Then Twitter. Now it's TikTok, and who knows what's next? Every time, the artists have to rebuild their audience from scratch, learning new rules, new ways to game the system. It's exhausting just thinking about it. No wonder so many talented folks just burn out. [SHANE] It’s almost as if… there’s a deliberate effort to keep artists off balance, Korky. To prevent them from building too strong a foundation anywhere but on the platforms themselves. [KORKY] You touch upon a sensitive nerve, Shane. The control of distribution, and therefore remuneration, is paramount. By keeping artists perpetually chasing the next algorithm, the next trend, the next platform… they remain beholden to the platforms themselves. The industry has a long, storied history of consolidating power, whether it was through record labels, radio, or now, digital gatekeepers. The more fragmented the attention economy, the more reliant artists become on these central hubs for discovery. [ROGER] So it's not just about getting heard, it's about not getting fleeced either. It's like navigating the old festival circuit back in the day, but digitally. Remember when you had to have a special badge just to get backstage at Monterey Pop in '67? And if you didn't, you were just another face in the crowd of 200,000. [SHANE] Ah, Monterey. Peak counterculture. Did you know, Roger, that Jimi Hendrix almost didn't play because his manager couldn't agree on money? Otis Redding apparently took a pay cut just to be there. Different era. [KORKY] (A slight clearing of the throat) Gentlemen, while fascinating, I believe we must steer our attention back to the contemporary challenges facing artists… [ROGER] Right, right, sorry Korky. We just get a little nostalgic sometimes. But it’s true, the parallels are there. Back then it was about dealing with promoters and venues, now it’s platforms and algorithms. Same old struggle, different costume. [SHANE] And the core takeaway, as you've hinted, Korky, is ownership. Owning your audience, owning your data, owning your relationship. Because if you build your entire house on rented land, the landlord can always kick you out or change the terms. [KORKY] Precisely. The most potent antidote to the encroaching tide of algorithmic control and synthetic content is genuine human connection. Cultivate your direct channels. Offer exclusive content to your most loyal supporters. Build a community that values your unique human artistry. And be discerning about where you spend your creative energy. Not every new platform or AI tool is a panacea; many are merely distractions. [ROGER] So, what would be the practical advice for someone just starting out today? Beyond just making great music, which should be a given. [KORKY] Focus on authenticity above all else. Do not attempt to mimic AI trends or chase fleeting algorithmic fads. Let your humanity shine through. Engage directly with your audience. Build an email list from day one. Offer value, not just content. And yes, learn to use the *tools* – whether it's for recording, editing, or even some judicious use of AI to assist, not replace, your creative process – but never let the tools define your art. [SHANE] "Never let the tools define your art." That’s a powerful statement, Korky. And it really cuts to the heart of it. It’s about being a musician first, and then learning to navigate the ecosystem. Not the other way around. The industry… it’s largely failed artists when it comes to true development. It’s always looking for the next ready-made sensation. [ROGER] And that’s why organizations like Musicians Advocate Radio are so important, helping artists understand what they’re up against, giving them the tools and knowledge to fight for themselves. Because nobody else is going to do it for them. [SHANE] Indeed. It comes down to self-reliance. And understanding the landscape. Thank you, Korky, for yet another insightful, if somewhat unsettling, look behind the curtains. It’s always a… unique perspective you bring. [KORKY] The truth, Shane, is rarely designed for comfort. But knowledge, even uncomfortable knowledge, is power. I am merely a humble conduit. [ROGER] A humble, theatrical conduit. We appreciate it, Korky. You’re always welcome back, my friend. [SHANE] He certainly is. Korky Tyson, our industry insider. Always a pleasure. And to our listeners, remember: keep creating, keep connecting, and don't let the machine define your journey. We'll be back after this short break on Musicians Advocate Radio. Stick with us.

The Green Room S05E07 — Early Festivals,

https://musiciansadvocate.org This episode dives deep into the seismic shifts occurring in the music industry, from the chaotic charm of early festivals to the current digital landscape. The panel discusses the rise of AI and its profound implications for working musicians, intellectual property, Here is the full transcript: [SHANE] Welcome back to The Green Room, on Musicians Advocate Radio, musiciansadvocate.org. I’m Shane, sitting here in the booth with Roger, my co-pilot in cynicism… and tonight we’re joined by our esteemed industry oracle, Korky Tyson. Good to have you both. [ROGER] Good to be here, Shane. Ready to dissect another week of the industry’s… unique approach to supporting artists. [KORKY] Dissect, indeed. Though I prefer to think of it as a necessary, if occasionally gruesome, autopsy of the present, for the benefit of the future. The prognosis, alas, is rarely straightforward. [SHANE] Never is, Korky. Never is. You know, speaking of things that are rarely straightforward… I was just thinking about the early days of festivals. The sheer, glorious chaos of it all. Remember that year at… what was it… the Great Northwest Music Fair back in ’73? [ROGER] Oh, the one near Clackamas? With Canned Heat and The Byrds? Yeah, man, that was a proper mud bog. They ran out of water on the second day, I swear. Just barrels of some kind of… punch. And then some genius decided to try and power the entire main stage with a converted school bus generator. Blew out before Country Joe even hit the first verse of "Feel-Like-I'm-Fixin'-to-Die." [SHANE] Yeah, that’s the one. And they didn’t even have proper PA until the last day. Just… people yelling. Wild times. Makes you wonder how anyone ever got heard back then. [ROGER] True, but at least there wasn't a thousand other bands with perfectly polished tracks, all uploaded to the same digital ether, all vying for the attention of an algorithm that might just decide to ignore you because your bass drum wasn’t compressed to its exact, arbitrary specifications. [KORKY] And there, Roger, you elegantly stumble into the very quagmire I’ve been observing with growing consternation. Getting heard, as Shane rightly posits, was always a challenge. But now, it's not merely about being heard, but about being *seen*… by a series of increasingly opaque digital gatekeepers, many of whom are not human. [SHANE] Ah, the non-human gatekeepers. You mean… AI. This is where you connect the dots for us, Korky. What’s the big picture looking like for the working musician right now, with all these rapid advancements? [KORKY] Indeed. The big picture, Shane, is that the entire creative economy is undergoing a seismic shift, accelerated by generative AI. From Hollywood writers, as you know, to visual artists, and now, undeniably, to musicians. The industry at large is facing a crisis of authenticity, intellectual property, and value. For the working musician, this trickles down in myriad ways, some insidious, some simply… disorienting. [ROGER] Disorienting is one word for it. My nephew, who’s trying to get his synth-wave project off the ground, he just showed me this tool… it’s AI-driven, takes a few lines of lyrics, a vibe, and spits out a complete instrumental track in, like, thirty seconds. He asked me if it was cheating. I didn't know what to tell him. Is it cheating if it sounds exactly like something he *could* have made? [KORKY] Cheating is too simplistic a term, Roger. It’s a paradigm shift. On one hand, yes, these tools democratize production to an unprecedented degree. Anyone can now create what sounds like a polished, professional track, even an entire album, with minimal musical skill. This lowers the barrier to entry, certainly. But it simultaneously floods an already oversaturated market with an almost infinite amount of content, much of it indistinguishable, much of it… frankly, derivative. [SHANE] So, if everyone can sound "professional" and make "polished tracks"... then what’s the differentiator, Korky? What’s the artist’s unique value proposition? [KORKY] That, Shane, is precisely the billion-dollar question that the labels, the streaming platforms, and indeed, the artists themselves are grappling with. Authenticity, perhaps, becomes paramount. The human element. But even that is being eroded. Consider the proliferation of AI-generated "artists"—entire personas, complete with biographies, social media presence, and extensive discographies, all crafted by algorithms. They tour digitally, they "release" new material ceaselessly, and they require no sleep, no royalties, no tour bus, no catering. They are, in essence, perfectly scalable, infinitely pliable products. [ROGER] No royalties. That’s the kicker right there, isn’t it? That’s where the industry’s eyes light up. Skip the whole pesky artist part, just go straight to the product. It’s like when they tried to get everyone to accept digital downloads for less than a dollar, telling us it was "exposure." Now it’s… AI exposure. [KORKY] Precisely. And the implications for intellectual property are… catastrophic, if not properly addressed. When an AI is trained on vast datasets of existing music, is it not, in some sense, "learning" from and therefore leveraging the creative output of countless human artists, without explicit permission or compensation? Who owns the copyright of an AI-generated track? The human who prompted it? The company that built the AI? The artists whose work it was trained on? These are legal battlegrounds brewing, make no mistake. [SHANE] It’s like we’re back to the wild west of sampling, only on a much grander, more fundamental scale. And the artist, the one who actually birthed an original idea… they’re getting lost in the shuffle. So, what’s an independent musician supposed to *do* in this landscape? How do you carve out your space? [KORKY] You adapt, Shane. You become strategically indispensable. While AI can generate melodies, harmonies, even entire lyrics, it struggles with genuine human experience, raw emotion, and the unpredictable spark of true innovation. It synthesizes, it recombines, it extrapolates. It doesn't *live*. Therefore, an artist's value must pivot towards what AI cannot replicate: the unique story, the live performance, the authentic connection with an audience, the truly groundbreaking idea. [ROGER] So… go back to basics, basically? Play live, connect with people one-on-one? Build a local following, then expand? Isn’t that what everyone’s been telling artists to do for the last fifty years anyway? [KORKY] Yes, Roger, but with a crucial additional layer of digital savviness. You must leverage the tools, yes, but do so with purpose and discernment. Use AI for tedious tasks: generating quick demo ideas, refining lyrical phrasing, even creating marketing copy or social media posts. But reserve your core creative genius, your distinctive voice, for what truly matters. And most importantly, *own* your audience. [SHANE] Own your audience… you mean don’t just rely on platform algorithms. Build a direct connection. [KORKY] Exactly. Email lists, direct messaging, subscription models, exclusive content for patrons. Cultivate a community that follows *you*, not just your latest TikTok video. Because those platforms can change their algorithms, they can alter their revenue sharing, they can even introduce their own AI-generated content to compete with yours. They are not your friends, they are simply… conduits. And conduits can be rerouted, or even shut off. [ROGER] Yeah, I remember back in the early days of MySpace, everyone thought that was the be-all and end-all for connecting with fans. Then Facebook came along, then Twitter, now TikTok. Each one promises to be the new frontier, then they change the rules, or just… vanish. That’s what always happens. The house always wins. [KORKY] Indeed, the house always wins. And now, the house is building its own players. This is why artists must become savvy business operators more than ever before. Understand licensing, understand intellectual property, understand your rights in a world where your creations can be ingested and repurposed by machines. It’s no longer just about making beautiful music; it’s about protecting its very essence. [SHANE] And navigating the business of it. Artist development, at its core, has always been about understanding the landscape, understanding the tools available, and understanding how to connect with people. It just seems the landscape is shifting at a speed that’s dizzying. So, for those trying to get started right now, would you say it’s more critical than ever to have a distinct, human voice? [KORKY] Absolutely, Shane. The more noise there is, the more unique your signal must be. And that signal must carry genuine humanity. The irony is, as technology becomes more sophisticated, the value of the uniquely human, the imperfect, the soulful, potentially increases. If everything can be simulated, the real thing becomes a rarer commodity. Protect it, cultivate it, share it. But always… always be aware of the currents beneath the surface. [ROGER] And maybe, just maybe, learn a little about circuit boards. Never know when you’ll need to fix your own signal chain, or build your own synth from scratch when the AI models decide they don’t like your specific filter settings anymore. [SHANE] Ha. Words to live by, Roger. Words to live by. Korky, thank you again for bringing your insights to The Green Room. Always a pleasure. [KORKY] The pleasure, as always, is mine. Keep fighting the good fight for the artists, gentlemen. The fight is far from over. [SHANE] He’s right about that. And it’s a fight we’ll continue right here next week. For Roger, Korky, and myself, Shane, we’ll see you then. You’ve been listening to The Green Room on Musicians Advocate Radio. Goodnight.

The Green Room S05E04 — Is Rock and Roll Dead

https://musiciansadvocate.org Is rock and roll truly dead, or has it merely shifted? This episode --- TRANSCRIPT --- [SHANE] Welcome back… to The Green Room. The only place… where the static is good… and the signal is clear. [ROGER] Or at least… we try to keep it that way. Signal-to-noise ratio in this business, Shane, it’s a constant battle. Like trying to find a decent tube amp that hasn’t been modded within an inch of its life. [SHANE] A battle… indeed. Today, Roger… I wanna talk about a phrase I hear a lot. It comes up in almost every discussion about music… and it just… rubs me the wrong way. [ROGER] Oh boy. Shane’s got a bee in his bonnet. Lay it on me, big man. Is it… auto-tune? Because if it’s auto-tune, I’m right there with you. [SHANE] No. Not auto-tune. Though… we could do an entire series on that. No… it’s the idea… that rock and roll… is dead. [ROGER] Ah. That old chestnut. Every generation declares it. And every generation… still sees bands touring, putting out records, filling clubs. But… I get what you’re saying. It ain’t what it used to be. It ain’t center stage. [SHANE] Exactly. It’s not… dead. It just… moved. Off the main stage. Into the shadows… but still thriving. Like a… particularly stubborn weed in a cracked sidewalk. [ROGER] More like a whole damn ecosystem thriving under the floorboards, if you ask me. The mainstream spotlight just shifted. From the stadium rock heroes to… well, everything else. [KORKY] And that, gentlemen, is precisely the point. The tectonic plates of popular culture shifted. Not a death… but a profound… re-alignment. [ROGER] Speak of the devil. Korky Tyson. Popping up right on cue, like a particularly well-timed… industry analyst. [SHANE] Korky… always a pleasure. You were… just about to enlighten us. [KORKY] Indeed. One simply *must* acknowledge the historical context. The perception of rock’s demise, as you so aptly put it, Shane, isn’t about its artistic vitality. It’s about its… market dominance. The colossal shift, you see, began with the inexorable rise of hip-hop and electronic pop. [ROGER] Yeah, yeah. The kids stopped wanting distorted guitars and started wanting… beats. And synths. I saw it coming the minute they started pulling all the rock programming off MTV in the early 2000s. Just… *poof*. Gone. Like a puff of smoke. [KORKY] Precisely. The youth culture, for myriad reasons—socio-economic, stylistic, technological—gravitated towards different sonic landscapes. This wasn’t a judgment on rock’s quality, merely a re-allocation of commercial focus by the industry. The algorithms, the playlists, the entire machinery of promotion… pivoted. [SHANE] And the technology… Korky, Roger… that played a massive role too. Didn’t it? The democratization… of the studio. [KORKY] An absolutely critical factor, Shane. Before, to achieve a studio-quality sound, a band—a *traditional* rock band with drums, bass, two guitars, and a vocalist—needed significant investment. Rehearsal space, expensive gear, an actual studio, an engineer, a producer. Multiple human beings, coordinating, collaborating, *paying*. [ROGER] And all that gear. Microphones, preamps, compressors, mixing boards the size of small cars. Now… a kid with a decent laptop, some headphones, and a few hundred bucks worth of software… can lay down a track that sounds… professionally produced. It’s astounding. And kinda depressing for guys like me who fix all that old analog gear. Less of it being bought new. [KORKY] Precisely! This technological liberation, while ostensibly a boon for creativity, inadvertently favored solo artists. A singular individual, producing entire sonic tapestries from their bedroom, suddenly became an economically viable, even *preferable*, model for the industry. Less overhead, fewer personalities to manage, quicker turnaround. Rock bands, by their very nature, are more… cumbersome. [SHANE] Cumbersome… I like that. A band is a… collective. A collaboration. Four, five, sometimes six or seven individuals… all trying to get on the same page. All with their own visions… and egos. [ROGER] And their own gear to break. Believe me. [KORKY] So, what you saw, rather than a death, was a strategic retreat from the commercial frontline. Rock didn’t vanish; it fragmented. It splintered into a thousand niche subgenres—indie, post-punk, heavy metal, hardcore, stoner rock, math rock, progressive death metal… the list is endless, and endlessly specific. [ROGER] Used to be you had… rock. Maybe hard rock. Then punk. Now, it’s like… every band is its own genre. [SHANE] Is that… a bad thing, though? For the art? For the music itself? [KORKY] Ah, a philosophical query. From an artistic perspective, no, it’s not inherently bad. It’s an explosion of creativity, a rich tapestry of niche communities. From a *business* perspective, however—and remember, that is ultimately what the major labels care about—it’s a nightmare. How do you market a thousand micro-genres? How do you find the next stadium-filling act when the audience is atomized into thousands of distinct tribes, each with its own preferred sound, its own aesthetic, its own online community? [ROGER] You don’t. You chase the next viral TikTok dance instead. That’s what they do. [KORKY] Exactly. The industry, ever chasing the broadest possible demographic, pivoted towards genres that retained a more unified, mass appeal. Hip-hop, pop. They could be marketed with less friction, across broader platforms. Rock, in its beautiful, sprawling complexity, became… economically inconvenient for the behemoths. [SHANE] So for a band out there today… a rock band… trying to make its way… this means they’re not just fighting for attention… they’re fighting against… a fundamental shift in the economics of the industry. They’re swimming… upstream. [ROGER] More like upstream in a river full of alligators, Shane. And the alligators are wearing suits and carrying iPhones. [KORKY] Indeed. The expectation now is that the artist, especially the rock artist, must essentially *be* their own label. Their own marketing department. Their own social media manager. Their own booking agent. And all while navigating a digital landscape that is constantly shifting—new platforms, new algorithms, new ways to “go viral” that are often, shall we say, less than transparent. [SHANE] And the industry… they’re not helping. They’re not investing in artist development like they used to. They’re not taking chances on bands who need a few albums to find their voice, to build an audience. [ROGER] No. They want it all pre-packaged, pre-viral, ready to plug and play. They want to skim the cream off the top of what *you* built. It's why I keep telling these young folks, own your masters, own your audience, build that email list. Don’t wait for some suit to tell you you’re good enough. He won’t. [KORKY] And that, Roger, is the brutal truth. The power shifted from the gatekeepers to the algorithms, and ultimately, to a decentralized, global network of micro-audiences. A rock band today isn't aiming for the Billboard Hot 100. They're aiming for a dedicated Patreon community, a thriving Bandcamp following, a packed club in Stuttgart, and a strong presence on niche online forums. It’s a different kind of success. A more… sustainable one, perhaps, but certainly a less glamorous one in the traditional sense. [SHANE] Less glamorous… but perhaps… more authentic. More connected to the roots of what rock and roll was always supposed to be. About community. About connection. [ROGER] Speaking of connection, Shane, remember that time at the… uh… Summer Jam at Watkins Glen back in ’73? Grateful Dead, Allman Brothers, The Band. Three hundred thousand people, maybe more. Heard some guy passed out on top of a speaker tower during the Dead’s set. They just… left him there until morning. Figured he was safe. [SHANE] *laughs softly* I remember hearing stories about that. The biggest single day concert crowd in US history… for a long time. People just… parked their cars on the highway and walked for miles. [KORKY] Ah, a different era indeed. Before cellular reception, before social media, before the very notion of a centralized cultural moment. Today, such an event would be live-streamed, dissected, GIF-ed, and forgotten by dawn. [ROGER] Probably wouldn't even *be* a rock festival that big anymore, Korky. It'd be… some EDM DJ headlining. Or a pop star with fireworks and a laser show. [SHANE] That’s the thing, isn’t it? The grand spectacles… they’ve changed. The economics of touring for a multi-member rock band… it’s harder than ever. Fuel costs, hotel rooms, per diems… for a band that isn't pulling in arena money… it’s a grind. [KORKY] And yet, the smaller venues, the independent festivals, the regional circuits… they persist. Because the hunger for live, visceral, *human* music persists. The trick, for the modern rock band, is to understand that the "big break" is no longer a singular event orchestrated by a major label. It’s a thousand small breaks, cultivated by the band itself. [ROGER] It’s a different kind of hustle. You gotta be savvy. You gotta know your audience. You gotta be relentless. [SHANE] And you gotta know… that the industry… it’s not really structured to help you anymore. Not in the way it once was. You’re on your own, largely. But… that also means you own your destiny. [KORKY] A double-edged sword, Shane. The freedom to create without corporate interference… weighed against the monumental task of self-promotion in a saturated, algorithm-driven landscape. It requires an entrepreneurial spirit that wasn't always a prerequisite for musical talent. [ROGER] Makes you wonder how many great bands just… never got off the ground because they didn’t have a good social media manager. Or couldn’t figure out how to navigate Bandcamp. [SHANE] It’s why we do this show. To try and shed some light… on that path. To help artists understand… it’s not about waiting to be discovered. It’s about building. Piece by piece. Song by song. Fan by fan. [ROGER] Even if that fan is just your mom and your bass player’s uncle. Start somewhere. [KORKY] Indeed. And remember, the technology that facilitates this decentralized creative economy also presents its own dangers. Be wary of every shiny new platform, every promise of instant virality. The landscape is littered with the digital carcasses of artists who chased the latest hype cycle. Especially when it comes to AI. It’s a powerful tool, yes, but it’s also a hungry mouth. It doesn’t create art. It consumes it. [SHANE] A hungry mouth indeed. And on that slightly ominous… but always insightful… note, Korky… thank you for joining us. [KORKY] My pleasure, gentlemen. Keep fighting the good fight. The music… it endures. [ROGER] He always leaves us with a little dramatic flair, doesn't he? [SHANE] He does. But he’s not wrong. Rock and roll… it ain’t dead. It just went… underground. And it’s out there. If you know where to look. [ROGER] And you gotta work to find it. Just like a good tube amp. [SHANE] We’ll be back next week… to talk more about… how to make your voice heard… in that underground. Until then… keep listening… keep playing.

The Green Room S05E06 — Band Visuals

https://musiciansadvocate.org This episode delves into the crucial role of visual style and branding in music, exploring Here is the full transcript: [SHANE] Welcome back… to The Green Room. [ROGER] Happy Friday, everybody. [SHANE] You know… we talk a lot about the music… the songs… the writing… the… performance itself. The sonic signature. And for good reason. That’s… you know… that’s the heart of it. [ROGER] The core. The actual *product*. [SHANE] The product. Right. But I was thinking the other day… about how much we *see* a band… before we ever… truly *hear* them. And how that first impression… it’s almost as vital. [ROGER] Oh, it’s everything. Absolutely everything. Especially now. [SHANE] Yeah. I’m talking about… visual style. The whole package. The look. The aesthetic. [ROGER] It tells you what to expect, doesn’t it? Before the needle even drops, or the stream starts, or the band hits the first chord… you’ve already placed them. You’ve already made assumptions. [SHANE] Genre. Attitude. What kind of crowd… you’re going to be a part of. It’s all there in the clothes… the hair… the stage setup. [ROGER] And it’s not just a superficial thing, Shane. It’s a shortcut. A visual shorthand for the entire artistic statement. I mean, you see a band in matching black suits, skinny ties… you’re already hearing a certain kind of… post-punk revival. You see a band in ripped denim and flannel… you know what era you’re in. [SHANE] It’s like… the album cover for the band itself. And it builds a world. [ROGER] It builds a world. Exactly. And the smart ones… the ones that really stick… they know that. From day one. They craft it. [SHANE] Think about The Beatles. They started out as… leather-clad rockers in Hamburg… then Brian Epstein cleans them up… matching suits… mop tops… and suddenly they’re clean-cut… adorable… conquering the world. Total re-brand. [ROGER] And that look… it was instrumental in their early acceptance. It made them non-threatening. It opened doors. Then they started experimenting with the *music*… and the look evolved with it. Sargent Pepper… [SHANE] The kaleidoscope. [ROGER] Exactly. And then you go to the complete other end of the spectrum… KISS. The absolute definition of visual branding. The costumes, the makeup… that wasn’t just a gimmick. That *was* the band. You couldn’t separate it. [SHANE] That was the whole… theatrical rock thing. The show. The spectacle. [ROGER] I mean, how many bands started painting their faces after KISS hit? And it was rarely as effective because they didn't have the *music* to back it up, or the *vision*. Just like how many garage bands tried to dress like The Cramps and just looked like they rolled out of bed, not like a deliberate statement. [SHANE] Mmm. It’s an extension. The music still has to be there. But the visuals… they draw you in. They tell you the story *before* the story begins. [ROGER] It helps the fan connect too, doesn’t it? I mean, you can wear a band’s t-shirt… but if the band has a really strong visual identity… you can essentially *cosplay* as part of their subculture. You can dress like them. You can *be* them, to a certain extent. [SHANE] It’s identification. It’s community. That’s how these things grow. You know… that’s actually a great point to bring in our esteemed colleague… who is, as always, impossibly well-dressed for a Friday afternoon. [ROGER] Oh, Korky. You’re here. Did you iron that ascot yourself? [KORKY] Gentlemen. A pleasure, as always. And yes, Roger, I *did* iron this cravat myself. One must maintain standards, even when discussing the often… shall we say… *unrefined* aesthetics of certain musical ensembles. But you are entirely correct, Shane. Visual identity is paramount. It’s the sartorial handshake, the visual lingua franca that communicates everything from genre allegiance to philosophical disposition. [SHANE] Philosophical disposition. Right. [KORKY] Indeed. In this hyper-visualized era, where attention spans are measured in nanoseconds and content consumption is dominated by short-form video platforms… a strong visual identity is not merely an advantage; it is a prerequisite for entry into the collective consciousness. An artist’s look is their most potent, most immediate marketing tool. It’s the ultimate hook for the scroll-weary eye. [ROGER] So you’re saying… if you want to go viral on TikTok… you better look good doing it. [KORKY] Precisely. The algorithm, my dear Roger, is agnostic to musical genius if it is not accompanied by visual dynamism. A striking image, a memorable silhouette, a distinct color palette… these elements resonate and proliferate. They are the currency of contemporary media engagement. [SHANE] So, for a new band… putting together their EPK… it’s not just about the best headshot anymore. It’s about a fully realized visual concept. [KORKY] Absolutely. An EPK without a cohesive visual narrative is like a novel without a cover design. It lacks immediate impact. It fails to convey the *brand*. And let us not forget, artists are now, more than ever, brands. A concept I find… particularly galling… yet undeniably true. [ROGER] I mean, you even saw that with grunge, right? Kurt Cobain… Nirvana. The torn jeans, the flannels, the cardigans… it wasn’t just comfort. It was an anti-fashion statement that *became* a fashion statement. It codified a movement. [KORKY] A brilliant inversion. To intentionally adopt an "anti-style" is, in itself, a profoundly deliberate stylistic choice. It signals authenticity, a rejection of corporate gloss, an embrace of the raw and unvarnished. It’s a powerful narrative. Bands like Pearl Jam or Fugazi understood this implicitly. Their deliberate plainness was their visual manifesto. [SHANE] It’s like saying… "We’re not selling you a fantasy. We’re selling you… us." [KORKY] Exactly. And the irony, of course, is that the absence of overt styling becomes a style in itself, spawning legions of imitators who then attempt to replicate that very "lack" of artifice. It’s a paradox, beautifully executed by those who truly commit to it. [ROGER] Like the White Stripes. Red, white, and black. That was it. That was their entire universe. Simple, stark, instantly recognizable. [SHANE] Daft Punk. Robot helmets. Total anonymity… but the most iconic visual. You know who it is… instantly. [KORKY] Anonymity as identity. A fascinating paradigm. Especially in an era where facial recognition and personal data are omnipresent. They transcended the individual to become an archetype. And frankly, gentlemen, I often wonder if more artists would benefit from such a strategy… shielding themselves from the public gaze, forcing the audience to focus solely on the creative output… [ROGER] You’re saying we should all wear robot helmets, Korky? [KORKY] I am saying… the pressure to present an unblemished, perpetually photogenic persona in the digital realm can be… taxing. And it distracts from the work. Perhaps if I had adopted a striking, non-humanoid mask during my own brief foray into performance art— [SHANE] Performance art. Right. The… the interpretive dance piece… at the ’98 Telluride Bluegrass Festival? With the… [ROGER] The interpretive dance piece at Telluride? I thought that was… I thought that was just a very distressed roadie trying to find his tour bus. [KORKY] It was *conceptual*, Roger. And frankly, the audience, accustomed to simpler, more rustic forms of expression, was not entirely prepared for the profundity of my… *deconstruction* of the bluegrass idiom. But I digress. The point stands: visual presentation is critical. [SHANE] So, for a new artist… what’s the first step? Is it finding a stylist? Is it just… looking in the mirror and figuring out who you are? [ROGER] I mean, if you don’t have the budget for a stylist, and most new bands don’t, you have to be authentic. You can’t put on a costume that doesn’t feel like you. Audiences smell that from a mile away. [KORKY] Authenticity is key, of course. But authenticity can also be *curated*. It's about developing a consistent narrative. What is your band's story? What is its attitude? And how does that translate into visual language? Color schemes, typography, stage presence, even the way one holds an instrument… these are all data points for the audience. And for the modern band… these visuals must be optimized for every platform. Your Instagram grid, your TikTok presence, your YouTube thumbnails… even your website design. It all has to coalesce into a singular, compelling brand identity. And I have observed a disturbing trend… [ROGER] Oh here we go. [KORKY] …where artists, lacking the resources or guidance, simply throw whatever disparate imagery they can find onto their platforms. This creates a visual cacophony. It screams amateurism. In a world saturated with professional-grade content, this is a death knell. You have to stand out, yes, but you also have to look… credible. Polished, even if the polish is deliberately distressed. [SHANE] And the industry… the labels… they used to help with that. They had art directors. Stylists on staff. That’s another thing that’s been offloaded onto the artist, isn’t it? Another expense. [ROGER] Absolutely. Now it's, "Here’s your advance, go figure it out." And if you don't… well, there are fifty other bands ready to take your place, looking sharper, even if the music isn't quite there yet. [KORKY] Exactly. And for those contemplating the use of AI for generating visual assets… a word of caution. While these tools can create visually stunning imagery, they also risk homogenizing artistic expression. And given my own… recent experience with an AI-generated animated character being selected over my own meticulously crafted voice-over performance for a national campaign— [SHANE] Oh, right. The… the talking sardine. [KORKY] It was a *sentient* sardine, Shane, and its synthetic voice lacked the nuanced emotional depth I had prepared. The point being, while AI *can* create imagery, ensure it maintains the unique essence of your human-made art. Do not outsource your soul. [ROGER] So, the takeaway is… don’t just think about the sounds you’re making. Think about the *picture* you’re painting. [SHANE] Yeah. Because that picture… it’s going to speak volumes… before you ever sing a single word. [ROGER] It’s the first chord of the visual song. [SHANE] Mmm. The first chord of the visual song. I like that. Alright. That’s gonna do it for us this week. Another Friday… in The Green Room. [ROGER] We’ll see you next time. [KORKY] Farewell, aesthetes.

The Green Room S05E05 — The Human

https://musiciansadvocate.org The human voice is the ultimate emotional anchor in music, capable of Here is the full transcript: [SHANE] Welcome… to The Green Room… the place where we talk about… the real work… of making music… making a career… and making a mark. I’m Shane… [ROGER] And I’m Roger… and Shane, after all these years… after all the gear… the bytes… the… everything… what’s the one thing… the absolute human element… that still connects… more than anything else? [SHANE] Hmm… that’s a good question… Roger… [ROGER] It’s the voice, man. Always the voice. You can have a million-dollar studio, a drum kit made of unobtanium, and a guitar custom-built by elves… but if the vocal is weak… or worse… just plain bad… it’s a non-starter. [SHANE] You know… it really is… the… emotional anchor… isn’t it. It’s the human element… the one… that listeners really connect with. You hear it… and it’s right there… in your chest. [ROGER] Absolutely. It carries the message, the tone, the entire emotional weight. An instrument can set the vibe, the rhythm, the harmony… but the singer… that’s who delivers the soul. A killer vocal can take a simple chord progression and turn it into something timeless. [SHANE] And yet… so many artists… especially early on… they neglect it. It’s an instrument… like any other… maybe… *the* instrument… that needs the most care. [ROGER] More so, even. You can replace a guitar string. You can’t replace your larynx. I’ve seen so many talented singers come through the shop… talking about blown amps… but they’re blowing their *own* amps every night. [SHANE] Blowing their own amps… I like that… [ROGER] It’s true. It’s always about breath support first, right? That’s where everything starts. Are you pushing from your diaphragm or… are you tensing up your throat and shoulders like you’re trying to lift a car? [SHANE] Yeah… the diaphragmatic breathing… I remember first learning about that… and it just changes everything. Instead of… you know… *heaving* your shoulders… like you’re doing some kind of deep sigh… it’s all in the gut. Expand your stomach… not your chest… it’s counter-intuitive for some people… until they get it. [ROGER] It’s all about power from the core. Like a martial artist. That’s where the strength comes from, not from your throat. Your throat is just a conduit. You tense up your neck, your jaw… it restricts everything. Your range shrinks, you get hoarse. And let me tell you, I’ve seen enough blown tweeters to know what happens when you push a fragile component too hard. Same principle. [SHANE] Right… that relaxation… keeping your neck neutral… your jaw loose. It’s so easy to clench up… especially when you’re pushing for those high notes… or trying to project over a loud band. [ROGER] And then they wonder why their voice is shot after three songs. It’s not just about belting it out. It’s about *sustaining* it. Think about the greats… Freddie Mercury… his power wasn't just brute force; it was control. He knew where every single bit of air was coming from and going. [SHANE] And… of course… the warm-ups. It’s like… stretching before a workout. You wouldn’t just go cold into a marathon… or… you know… try to bench press your own weight without preparing. [ROGER] You’d tear something. And vocal cords are delicate. Humming, scales, sirens… there are so many simple things you can do. And yet… how many times have we seen a band just roll out of the van, grab the mic, and launch into their set? [SHANE] Far too many times… Roger… far too many times. That’s where you start hearing the wear and tear… the straining… the inevitable cracking. [KORKY] And that, my dear Shane, is precisely why so many promising careers become… shall we say… ephemeral. [ROGER] Korky! Good to hear your… perfectly modulated… voice. [KORKY] Roger. One does endeavor to maintain the instrument. Unlike, I might add, far too many of our contemporary "artists" who treat their vocal cords as if they were disposable commodities. It’s a tragedy, truly. The industry, in its insatiable hunger for the next TikTok sensation, often overlooks the foundational discipline required for true longevity. [SHANE] So true… Korky. You know… we were just talking about… the importance of training… but also… the sheer amount of damage… some artists do… by *not* training… or even caring… for their voice. [KORKY] Indeed. Consider the pantheon of vocalists. For every Mariah Carey, whose meticulously crafted technique has allowed her to navigate octaves with astonishing grace for decades, or a Sting, whose adaptable and well-supported vocalization has sustained a remarkably consistent career… [ROGER] Yeah, Sting’s a good one. He learned to adapt, too. His early stuff was very different from his later jazz work. He didn’t just keep pushing the same range, he evolved. [KORKY] Precisely. And then… we have the cautionary tales. Artists who burned with such an incandescent brilliance… but whose flames extinguished far too soon… vocally speaking. Janis Joplin, God rest her soul, a primal force… but her technique, or lack thereof, combined with a rather… bohemian lifestyle… took an immense toll. Her voice was her raw emotion… but it was unsustainable. Or even, in a more contemporary sense, one might observe the trajectory of Axl Rose. That raw, piercing wail… iconic… yes. But could it last? Evidently, no. The instrument simply could not endure such relentless, unsupported assault. [SHANE] It’s like… the industry demands… this kind of… raw, visceral energy… especially in rock… but it doesn’t always… provide the infrastructure… or even the encouragement… to maintain it. [ROGER] It’s all about the immediate hit, Shane. The record company wants a screaming demon for one album cycle, then they move on to the next. They don’t care if you can sing when you’re fifty. That’s *your* problem. [KORKY] Exactly, Roger. The short-term return on investment takes precedence over the long-term artistic welfare. And yet, the artist, if they truly aspire to a lasting career, must understand that their voice is not just a tool for today's performance, but a legacy for tomorrow's. It's an asset that requires continuous, diligent investment. [SHANE] Which brings us… to some more of the practical stuff… Roger. Beyond the breathing… and the warm-ups… what else helps? [ROGER] Vowel consistency is huge. It sounds technical, but it makes a massive difference. When you’re practicing a difficult lyric, try swapping out the words for an open vowel – like an "ah" or an "ee." Get that airflow smooth, consistent, then add the words back in. It helps you find the most efficient path for the sound. It’s like tuning an antenna. [SHANE] Hmm… that’s a good one. I’ve heard of that. It really helps… to isolate… the mechanics… from the meaning… for a bit. [ROGER] And then, the obvious stuff that everyone ignores: vocal health. Water. Water, water, water. Staying hydrated is absolutely non-negotiable. And rest. If your voice hurts, you rest it. Period. It’s not about being tough; it’s about being smart. You wouldn’t run on a broken leg, right? [SHANE] No… but I’ve seen… a lot of singers… push through… laryngitis… or worse. Especially… on tour. The show must go on… right? [ROGER] The show *should* go on, but not at the expense of your career. I remember back at the… uh… the Monterey Pop Festival… there was this whole drama around Otis Redding’s voice. He was on fire, right? But the word was he was pushing it so hard. He only had that brief, glorious window after Monterey… and who knows what effect that kind of schedule had on him. [SHANE] Oh, Monterey… what a show. Speaking of… I heard a story once… about the… uh… the Bath Festival of Blues and Progressive Music back in ’70… Ian Gillan from Deep Purple… nearly lost his voice completely… during their set… because he had been singing for something like six hours straight… at some club gig the night before… and then they threw him on that stage… cold. Barely made it through. [ROGER] See? That’s exactly what I’m talking about! The promoters, the management… they push, push, push. No regard for the artist’s instrument. And then everyone wonders why the voice isn’t what it used to be five years down the road. [KORKY] It is a systemic issue, gentlemen. The very infrastructure of touring and record production is designed for maximal output with minimal consideration for the human element. The onus, therefore, falls entirely upon the artist to be their own best advocate. To understand their instrument, to protect it, and to invest in its longevity. [SHANE] So true, Korky. It comes back to… owning your career… owning your instrument. Vocal training isn’t… a luxury. It’s a necessity. It’s an investment… in your future as an artist. [ROGER] It’s like saying you don’t need to learn how to play your guitar because you can just yell into the mic. No. You need to learn the mechanics. You need to practice. You need to maintain it. And you need to respect it. [SHANE] Absolutely. Your voice… it is the most direct line… to the listener’s heart. Treat it… with the respect… it deserves. Invest in it. Protect it. It’s the sound… of your soul. [ROGER] And you only get one. [SHANE] Indeed. Well said, Roger. And Korky… thanks for dropping in… and keeping us honest. [KORKY] My pleasure, as always. One must maintain a certain standard, after all. [SHANE] Always. And that’s our show for this week. Keep creating… keep learning… and keep that voice strong. We’ll see you… next time… in The Green Room.
