Why Musicking Makes You Smarter at Any Age

I am not going to tell you that playing music made Einstein a genius. That is the kind of claim that sounds good in a headline and collapses the moment you look at it. Plenty of people played violin in the twentieth century and did not develop the theory of relativity. Correlation is not cause. You already know that.

What I want to tell you is something different. Something more interesting. And something far more useful to you.

These people played because they knew, at some level they may not have been able to fully articulate, that it made them better. Not smarter in some vague general sense. Better at accessing what was already in them. The music was not decoration. It was operational.

Now there is a scientific framework that explains exactly why.

Good Quality is a Wrong Question

There is a sentence that lives in the heads of millions of adults.

I am not good enough.

This episode is not going to tell you that you are good enough. I want to do something more useful than that. I want to show you where that question comes from, why it does not belong in a conversation about music, and what it has cost you.

3,400 Strangers Who All Wanted to Be Alone – And Found Each Other Anyway

The 3,400 commenters are not failures at being alone. They are successes at being lonely. And those are not the same thing. They went looking for permission to be alone, and found, at the bottom of a comment section about solitude, people who were not draining, not transactional, not asking them to perform. People who were, in that one moment, simply there. Saying: me too.

What they found in that comment section is real. But it is also a fairly crude technology for what they were actually after. Witness without cost. Company without performance.

Musicking is a finer technology for the same thing. It does not need a screen or an account or anyone's approval. It needs a body, which you already have, and a willingness to make a sound in the room you are already in.
