Flávio Bolsonaro misses passport deadline as reports say he went to Argentina
Far-right senator Flávio Bolsonaro has been out of sight since Monday and failed to hand over his passport to federal police by eleven a.m. on Tuesday as required. A Supreme Court judge had revoked the passport minutes after Sunday’s presidential election, in a ruling related to a criminal case against the senator. Argentine media reported that Bolsonaro had gone to Argentina, though accounts varied on whether he crossed the border on foot or planned to board a private jet. The aircraft did not depart. Since there is no record of him passing through a regular Brazilian immigration checkpoint, federal police are asking Argentine officials whether he entered the country. Bolsonaro has yet to concede defeat to Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. In a video released on Monday, he said he had never thought about leaving Brazil.
Authorities are investigating Bolsonaro for possible involvement in a reported money-laundering scheme tied to betting companies, worth about 680 million pounds, or 905 million dollars. Political scientist Magna Inácio said the election could leave a power vacuum on the right. Camila Rocha said influence could move away from Jair Bolsonaro’s sons.
