На вопросы поклонников отвечал молчанием или горько-ироническим: «Разве не достаточно опер уже написанных?». Но он возвращается к музыке в других жанрах. Stabat Mater и «Маленькая торжественная месса» — главные произведения постоперного Россини.

Во второй половине 18 века в маленькой Италии было около 150 оперных театров. Только четырем из них помогало государство, все остальные были коммерческими. К каждому сезону импресарио театров старались получить как минимум одну новую постановку, на каждый новый сезон набиралась новая труппа. Оперные композиторы поставили сочинение музыки на поток. Ведущие певцы получали царские гонорары. В этих обстоятельствах Россини чувствовал себя очень комфортно.
