Others trace forgotten paths worn into the landscape by countless generations of travellers. Yet according to folklore, not everyone who journeys these roads is among the living.

In this episode of Mythic Albion, we venture onto Britain's most haunted highways, exploring the chilling legends that have haunted travellers for centuries.

We begin with the eerie Corpse Roads, ancient funeral routes where ghostly processions and restless spirits were said to continue their final journey long after death. From there, we encounter the mysterious Hairy Hands of Dartmoor, an unseen force blamed for terrifying encounters on the lonely roads of the Moor.

Our journey then leads to Blue Bell Hill in Kent, home to Britain's most famous phantom hitchhiker, before travelling further back into folklore with tales of spectral coaches and ghostly carriages racing through the darkness as omens of death and misfortune.

Finally, we arrive at the crossroads — those liminal places where roads, worlds and destinies were believed to meet. Places associated with ghosts, witchcraft, restless spirits and even the Devil himself.

From lonely country lanes and windswept moorland roads to phantom passengers and supernatural encounters, this episode explores why roads have occupied such a powerful place within Britain's folklore and imagination.

Because every road tells a story.

And some stories never reach their destination.

Mythic Albion — where history, folklore and legend meet in the shadows.

0:01 - collaboration

0:24 - intro

3:21 - Corpse Roads

7:47 - Phantom Coaches

13:30 - Crossroads

17:41 - Hairy Hands of Dartmoor

22:19 - Blue Bell Hill and Phantom Hitchhikers

26:31 - Conclusion

With music by Dream Cave, Miles Avida, Ruiqi Zhao, Belladonna Strings, Martin Klem, Golden Anchor, Etienne Roussel and Philip Ayers

Music and sound effects licensed via Epidemic Sound (www.epidemicsound.com).

All audio elements under active subscription licence. 17. The Devil's Mark

For centuries, the Devil has stalked the folklore of Britain.

Not merely as the ruler of Hell described in scripture, but as a wanderer of lonely roads, a tempter upon windswept hills, and a dark presence lurking in the shadows of the British landscape.

In this episode of Mythic Albion, we explore some of Britain's most chilling devil legends and the strange places said to bear his mark.

We begin with the infamous Devil's Footprints of 1855, when mysterious hoofprints appeared across the snow-covered countryside of Devon, sparking panic throughout Victorian England. From there, we uncover the tale of the Mowing Devil, a sinister figure said to have cut a farmer's field in a single night, and the legend of Piers Shonks, the dragon-slayer who outwitted the Devil himself.

Our journey continues to the haunted heights of Chanctonbury Ring, where local folklore claims the Devil may be summoned beneath the moonlight, before visiting the mysterious Devil's Chair and the dramatic landscape of Devil's Dyke, whose very creation was blamed upon Satan's handiwork.

Along the way, we discover how Christianity transformed ancient pagan sites into places of fear, how the Devil became woven into the geography of Britain, and why these stories have endured for centuries.

From windswept hills and ancient earthworks to unexplained footprints in the snow, this is a journey into the dark heart of British folklore.

Because in Britain, the Devil was never far away.

Mythic Albion — where history, legend and folklore meet in the shadows.

0:10 - Intro

03:07 - The Devils footprints

06:18 - The Mower Devil

08:55 - The Legend of Piers Shonks

12:19 - The Chanctonbury Ring/Devil's Dyke

15:44 - The Devil's Chair of Shropshire

18:36 - Jack O' Kent

21:55 - Conclusion

With music by Lennon Hutton, Viktor Lundberg, Hampus Niaeselius, Guto Lucena, Ruiqi Zhao, Jon Bjork, Walt Adams and Enigmatic.

Music and sound effects licensed via Epidemic Sound (www.epidemicsound.com).

All audio elements under active subscription licence.
