Pursuing wisdom through primary and secondary worlds.
Mythic Mind Movies is a conversation about film as a secondary world. We watch with the same questions we bring to books and games: what a story forms in us, what it names as good and evil, and how images train the heart.
This is not a recap show and not a ratings list. Episodes stay with particular films and ask what they are doing to the imagination: The Lord of the Rings, Star Wars, Princess Mononoke, Godzilla Minus One, The Princess Bride, Dead Poets Society, The Truman Show, Rashomon, and more, often read alongside Tolkien, C.S. Lewis, and Kierkegaard. Memory, identity, despair, hope, and the hunger for a true home return here as often as plot and craft.
Hosted by Andrew Snyder, Ph.D., alongside friends from the Fellowship.

32 - Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind: Love Is Worth Remembering
What if you could erase the person who hurt you the most? Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind imagines a small clinic that lifts painful memories out of your past and leaves the rest of you standing. But as Joel watches his memories of Clementine disappear, he changes his mind and fights to keep her. The pain we want to escape is tangled up with the love we were made to seek, and forgetting our mistakes only sets us up to repeat them.
In this episode of Mythic Mind Movies, Dr. Andrew Snyder, Kit, and David discuss Michel Gondry and Charlie Kaufman's film as a descent into the underworld of the mind. Andrew reads Joel as an introspective Orpheus who loses Clementine from his conscious memory but keeps something deeper: the endurance and hope to say, "I choose you, no matter what."
The conversation also explores the clinicians who sell an easy fix while their own lives are in shambles; whether the ending is futile or hopeful; why "can I do better?" is the wrong question to ask about love, with help from one of Tolkien's letters and Lewis's The Great Divorce; Patrick's counterfeit romance built from stolen memories; and why, in an age of digital blocking and transhumanist promises, we have to affirm the real, including the parts of our past we would rather forget. As Andrew puts it, "The question is not, can I do better? The question is, can I be better to the commitments that I've already made?"

30 - Rashomon: How the Psyche Rewrites the Truth
Watch the video:

We tend to think that the past is fixed in memory and that our eyes simply tell us the truth. Akira Kurosawa's Rashomon shows something more unsettling: people can witness the same event and remember it differently, not only because they lie, but because pride, shame, fear, and self-preservation shape what they are able to see.
In this episode of Mythic Mind Movies, Andrew Snyder, Kit, and David discuss the "Rashomon effect," the film's four contradictory accounts of a samurai's death, and why Kurosawa is not arguing that objective truth does not exist. The murder happened. The stories differ because each witness rewrites reality to preserve a role: hero, victim, honorable man, or innocent observer.
The conversation also explores the ruined Rashomon Gate as a landscape of the psyche; the monk, commoner, and woodsman as a struggle among moral idealism, cynicism, and the conflicted self; Kurosawa's groundbreaking cinematography; and the abandoned child whose appearance turns a story about deception toward sacrifice and hope. The film's final answer to a broken world is not perfect knowledge of the past, but the choice to do the good that stands before you.
