Narrative Collapse

About Narrative Collapse

A podcast about faith, life, the Bible, church, culture and the questions people actually ask when nobody is handing out neat little Sunday-school answers. Gerry and Pete are two Christians, who preach and pastor, talking things through. Sometimes theology, sometimes current affairs, sometimes church life, discipleship, prayer, the Holy Spirit, Christian living and the slightly odd business of trying to follow Jesus in modern Britain. Christian Nationalism, God's Judgement & Healing Prayer

Christian Nationalism, God's Judgement & Healing Prayer | Gerry & Pete Is Britain becoming Christian again, or have we simply discovered that the Union Jack looks rather splendid next to a cross? Can climate change and natural disasters be signs of God's judgement? And when does a well-meant prayer for healing become something altogether less holy? Three stories this week on Gerry & Pete. Three questions that are not quite as straightforward as the headlines would have us believe. Which, admittedly, is not a particularly high bar. And if a headline makes everything sound terribly simple, that is usually the moment to start asking questions. Gerry and Peter are both Christian ministers and preachers. They come at these stories from a Bible-believing, evangelical, Pentecostal perspective. That means they believe Jesus Christ is Lord, the Bible is God's word, the Holy Spirit is active today, and prayer, prophecy and healing are not quaint religious antiques to be kept in a cupboard until Christmas. It also means they are perfectly capable of disagreeing, asking awkward questions and occasionally wondering whether Christians have made a bit of a hash of things. First, Christian nationalism in Britain. Research suggests that some of the people most determined to defend Britain's Christian identity seldom actually attend church. So what exactly are they defending? Christian faith? Christian culture? A rather cosy memory of Sunday school, village fêtes and hymns at weddings? Is patriotism compatible with biblical Christianity? Certainly. Is waving a cross the same as following the crucified Christ? Well, that's rather the point of the discussion. Gerry and Pete ask whether Britain is seeing a Christian revival or merely a revival of Christian nostalgia, and whether the Church itself has helped create the muddle. Next, the devastating wildfires in Indonesia. Hundreds of homes destroyed, families displaced, and the inevitable question: where is God in a natural disaster? Is this climate change, human mismanagement, El Niño, divine judgement, or some combination we cannot confidently untangle? The Bible certainly speaks of God judging nations. Jesus also warned people against assuming disaster victims were worse sinners than everybody else. Those two truths need to be held together. And perhaps spoken about with rather more humility than is fashionable. Gerry and Pete consider creation care, repentance, environmental responsibility and what Christians can honestly say about God's judgement today. Finally, healing prayer and spiritual abuse. The Church of England has issued guidance about controlling behaviour, inappropriate spiritual authority and the so-called "saviour syndrome" in pastoral prayer. Sensible safeguarding, or another opportunity to put the Holy Spirit through a risk-assessment form? Perhaps that's a false choice. Gerry and Pete believe God still heals. They also believe ministers can get things wrong, prophecies must be tested, and vulnerable people should never be manipulated in God's name. What does healthy, courageous, Spirit-filled prayer ministry actually look like? This is Christian commentary with theological teeth, a bit of humour, proper biblical argument and, quite possibly, the occasional detour. Not party-political Christianity. Not a timid faith that apologises for expecting God to act. Two preachers talking seriously about the news, the Church and the world, without pretending the answers always arrive neatly tied up. Come and listen. You may disagree. Good. Bring your Bible, bring your questions, and bring your thinking cap. We'll try to remember ours. #GerryAndPete #ChristianPodcast #ChristianNationalism #EvangelicalChristianity #Pentecostal #HolySpirit #ClimateChange #GodsJudgement #HealingPrayer #SpiritualAbuse #Bible

Heroes, Hijackers and the Woman Who Wouldn’t Die

An attempted plane hijacking, extraordinary passenger bravery, and Christa Pike’s survival of a failed execution: Gerry & Pete explore Christian martyrdom, the death penalty, and the uncomfortable business of deciding where justice ends and mercy begins. Two stories about life and death. Neither fits particularly neatly into a slogan, although that has never stopped anyone trying. We begin with the reported cockpit attack on a Flydubai flight from Dubai to Tel Aviv, and the courage of the wounded captain, passengers and crew who helped prevent catastrophe. There is something sobering about ordinary people suddenly having to make decisions most of us would rather leave to somebody else. Somebody trained, preferably. Somebody standing considerably nearer the emergency. Yet people acted. Lives were saved. And that deserves our attention before we allow the attacker to occupy the whole story. But what if someone deliberately kills innocent people and dies in the process? Does willingness to die for a cause make that person a martyr? Gerry and Pete examine the difference between Christian martyrdom and violence given a religious justification. The attacker’s motive must not be assumed; the moral question, however, can still be asked. Stephen prayed for those killing him. Jesus spoke of laying down your life for others. That is rather different from deciding that everybody else should lay down theirs. Strong conviction, on its own, proves very little. You can be utterly committed and utterly wrong. Then we turn to Christa Pike and the disturbing questions raised by her failed lethal injection in Tennessee. We remember Colleen Slemmer, the young woman Pike murdered, and the grief of a family whose loss must never become a footnote in somebody else’s argument. Can a Christian support capital punishment in principle while believing that, after an actual execution attempt has failed, the state should stop? Pete argues that it can, and should, draw that line. Continued imprisonment remains possible. Mercy does not require opening the prison gates and hoping for the best. We also revisit “Half-Hangit Maggie” Dickson and John “Babbacombe” Lee, historical cases in which execution failed and the condemned were spared another attempt. Some understood survival as divine providence. Others argued that making someone endure the terror again was simply more than justice should demand. Was God intervening? We cannot announce his intentions with the confidence of a press officer. But perhaps uncertainty should sometimes produce humility, rather than another appointment with the executioner. Along the way, we discuss research into botched executions, the distinction between punishment and vengeance, and why a procedure that looks clinical is not necessarily humane. This is a Christian conversation about courage, human dignity, accountability and forgiveness, with room for disagreement and questions that remain difficult after the microphones are switched off. No easy answers supplied in matching presentation boxes. Join Gerry & Pete for biblical reflection on the news, honest discussion of faith and public life, and a serious question beneath both stories: when we possess the power to take life, what should teach us to show mercy?

Can You Forgive the Unforgivable? Are We Living in the End Times?

The Clancy case, Christian forgiveness, the Rapture and the end times: Gerry and Pete explore questions. How can we forgive terrible wrongdoing without excusing it? And how should Christians understand Bible prophecy without surrendering to fear, speculation or endless predictions? Both preachers serving churches in a pastoral capacity, Gerry and Pete bring Scripture, pastoral experience and honest conversation to subjects that touch grief, justice, hope and the way we live today. This is a discussion with room for different interpretations, grounded in shared convictions about Jesus Christ. We begin with the Clancy case and the difficult questions raised by a husband’s forgiveness. What does forgiving someone actually mean when the harm cannot be undone? Does forgiveness remove consequences? Must reconciliation follow? And can Christians support punishment while refusing to seek personal revenge? Romans 12:19 tells believers to leave vengeance to God: “Vengeance is mine; I will repay, saith the Lord.” Yet Romans 13:1–4 describes the governing authorities’ responsibility to administer justice. How do those passages belong together? We consider forgiveness as a refusal to remain captive to anger and the desire for retaliation, without pretending that suffering does not matter. Forgiveness does not automatically cancel accountability, restore trust or free someone from the consequences of their actions. Jesus’ teaching in Matthew 6:12–15 brings the challenge uncomfortably close to home: this is not simply a question about what somebody else should do. Then we turn to the Rapture, the Feast of Trumpets and the recurring fascination with the end times. What does the Bible actually promise? When Paul describes believers being caught up to meet the Lord in 1 Thessalonians 4:13–18, how should we understand that hope? Our conversation finds common ground in partial preterism and inaugurated eschatology. Those terms open up a compelling question: how much biblical prophecy concerns events already fulfilled, and what still lies ahead? We explore the “already, but not yet” of God’s kingdom: Christ has come, conquered and begun his reign, while Christians still await his bodily return, the resurrection and the final fulfilment of God’s purposes. Along the way, we consider first-century context, AD 70 and why these distinctions matter when reading passages about judgment and Christ’s coming. We remain open to different points of view, asking how Christians can discuss prophecy seriously while keeping their confidence centred on Jesus. What connects forgiveness and the end times? Perhaps more than we first imagine: trusting God with judgment, refusing to let fear or bitterness govern us, and learning to live faithfully now. Join Gerry and Pete for a searching, accessible Christian conversation about forgiveness without evasion, justice without vengeance, and an end-times hope that shapes how we care for people today, in our churches and beyond.

Lost Civilisations, Lindsay Clancy & Israel: A Christian Perspective | Gerry & Pete Ep. 1

Are we the pinnacle of civilisation, or have we forgotten more than we realise? In the first episode of Gerry & Pete, we tackle lost civilisations, the Lindsay Clancy case, and Israel and Gaza through an openly Christian perspective. Three subjects, plenty of questions, and no confidence that the accepted explanation is always the right one. We begin with Graham Hancock, his appearance on The Joe Rogan Experience, and his theories about ancient civilisations destroyed by catastrophe. From the Amazon to the Egyptian pyramids, we explore claims about lost technology, forgotten knowledge and the possibility that human history has involved collapse as well as progress. How might these ideas connect with Genesis, Noah’s flood and the Bible’s account of early civilisation? We don’t agree with everything Hancock says. But dismissing a question is considerably easier than answering it. Next, the conversation turns to the deeply disturbing Lindsay Clancy case and the moral questions surrounding criminal responsibility, mental illness and the insanity defence. Responding to commentary from Alan Dershowitz, we discuss punishment, rehabilitation, capital punishment and the difference between justice and vengeance. What should Christians want from a justice system? And how do we speak about repentance and forgiveness when the suffering involved is almost impossible to comprehend? That leads to one of Christianity’s most challenging claims: forgiveness through Jesus Christ is available even to people whose actions horrify us. We consider what genuine repentance means, why forgiveness does not remove the need for safeguarding, and why grace can be much harder to accept when it is offered to somebody else. Finally, we turn to British policy towards Israel, proposed sanctions, the Palestinian question and the two-state solution. We question media narratives, discuss antisemitism and diplomacy, and explore biblical themes of covenant, judgement, restoration and the Messiah. Along the way, we distinguish support for Jewish people from blanket approval of every decision made by an Israeli government. Gerry & Pete brings Christian commentary to current affairs, history, culture and the questions beneath the headlines. Expect biblical discussion, occasional disagreement and a willingness to follow an awkward question a little further than polite conversation normally permits. Whether you’re interested in Christian apologetics, biblical history, Graham Hancock’s ancient apocalypse theories, justice and forgiveness, or a Christian perspective on Israel, join us for this opening conversation. Listen, subscribe, and share your thoughts. What have we missed, and which question should we take up next? Flat Earth? Not So Fast

Some say the Earth is flat. Others say that claim is flat-out nonsense. In this episode, I dive into why flat Earth theories persist, especially among Christians, and what the Bible really says (and doesn’t say) about the shape of the Earth. From ancient Hebrew cosmology to the rejection of space and gravity in modern flat Earth models, I weigh the evidence and explore the psychology behind the movement. Plus, we look at the globe model’s ancient roots—from Eratosthenes to lunar eclipses—and ask: what makes people question the official story? Trump’s 2025 Easter Message

In his 2025 Easter message, President Donald Trump delivered a profound and unapologetic affirmation of the Christian gospel, marking one of the most theologically direct statements from a sitting U.S. president in recent history. Addressing the nation during Holy Week, Trump emphasized the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, referring to Him as “our Lord and Savior” who “conquered death, freed us from sin, and unlocked the gates of Heaven for all of humanity.” He highlighted the significance of the Paschal Triduum—Holy Thursday, Good Friday, and the Easter Vigil—urging Americans to reflect on Christ’s sacrifice and the hope of eternal life. Beyond spiritual reflections, Trump reiterated his administration’s commitment to defending religious liberty, pledging to protect the Christian faith across schools, the military, workplaces, hospitals, and government institutions. He called for an outpouring of the Holy Spirit upon the nation, praying for America to remain a beacon of faith, hope, and freedom. This message stands in contrast to previous administrations, showcasing a renewed emphasis on traditional Christian values and the role of faith in public life. Trump’s Easter address not only underscores his alignment with evangelical constituents but also signals a broader cultural shift towards embracing religious expression in the national discourse. April Foolz!

Is atheism the ultimate April Fool’s joke? In this special Narrative Collapse episode, we celebrate International Atheist Day—April 1st—by exposing the foolishness of atheism. After all, “The fool has said in his heart, ‘There is no God.’” (Psalm 14:1). We take a look at atheist arguments, debunking the five dumbest claims made by skeptics. From the classic “Who created God?” paradox to the absurd idea that nothing created everything, we dismantle their reasoning with sharp logic, historical facts, and biblical wisdom. Along the way, we’ll tackle scientific materialism, the myth of secular morality, and why atheism collapses under its own contradictions.
