   Scale Impact, Not Problems

What does it take to scale a mission without scaling the chaos that comes with it? In Episode 8 of Naserian Rises, hosts Iman Hatibu and Jamila Lugembe sit down with Noella Moshi, founder of One Advisory, a consulting practice that helps mission-driven organizations scale their impact without scaling their problems. Noella was born in Tanzania, grew up largely in Papua New Guinea, and now lives in Massachusetts outside Boston. She explains how she turns a founder's vision into a plan that the board, funders, team and community can all get behind, and why she calls that work narrative strategy: making sure what an organization says, what it does and how it operates line up. Her case study is a Western Massachusetts pilot designed to help working parents get past the "benefits cliff," the point where a raise can cost a family more in lost support than it gains. The conversation also gets personal. Noella, Iman and Jamila talk about moving to the United States, finding community through parenting, curbside reuse and thrifting, failing (and then passing) the driver's road test, and how support systems differ between Dar es Salaam and a US suburb. In this episode, you will learn: Scaling impact without scaling problems starts with integrity: what you say, what you do and how you run day to day must match. Narrative strategy brings your board, funders, team and community along with a founder's vision. The benefits cliff can make a raise a net loss for working families. Noella argues the case must be made that the status quo is a lose-lose-lose for government, employers and employees. Community can be built on shared values and shared life stages, such as parenting, not only on where you come from. Take the first step and let it build the muscle for the next one. Get a coach or mentor early, because founders have blind spots about themselves. Nobody has it figured out. Use free webinars, podcasts and masterclasses to learn as you go. Change the narrative: communities are already investing in themselves, and the funder should not be the hero of every story. Also in this episode: Naserian Axis shares that planning is under way for 16 Days of Activism against gender-based violence, being carried out on behalf of Tanzanian women, with webinars to follow. Resilience to Purpose: Mental Health & Finding Your Voice - Part 2

In Part 1, we laid out the numbers. In Part 2, we go deeper. Sizarina Hamisi, psychosocial counsellor and founder of the Chimwemwe Counseling Hub in Dar es Salaam returns to pull back the curtain on what the statistics actually look like in a counseling room. She walks us through her caseload: women navigating the long aftermath of gender-based violence, individuals in substance-use recovery, and a growing cohort of clients whose trauma is rooted not in the home, but in the workplace specifically, the mining sector. Sizarina shares what she's witnessing firsthand among women in artisanal and small-scale mining communities, where abuse, harassment, and unsafe conditions don't just cause harm, they quietly erode productivity, economic participation, and women's ability to stay in livelihoods that could otherwise change their lives. She makes the case that counseling is not a soft add-on to development programming; it is the foundation without which everything else stalls. Then Jamila, Iman, and Sizarina shift gears into a conversation that hits close to home for anyone building a career in the development sector: Why do professionals need a personal brand that exists independently of the organizations they work for? What happens when the institution moves on or moves in a direction you don't? And how do you begin to build visibility and credibility in your own name? Candid, grounded, and deeply practical — this one stays with you. 🌐 Want to learn more about our work at the intersection of gender, governance, and impact? What Real Men Do For Women

Empowering Women in Development: Insights from Amani Mhinda In today's world, the inclusion of women in development discussions is more critical than ever. With a focus on real stories and actionable insights, this episode dives into a recent conversation with Amani Mhinda, a development practitioner from Tanzania. Amani's journey highlights the importance of women’s voices in policy-making and community development. You’ll learn about the challenges faced by women in traditionally male-dominated sectors, the significance of education, and how empowering women can lead to economic growth and social justice. Amani Mhinda: A Voice for Communities Amani Mhinda is not just a development practitioner; he is a passionate advocate for the rights of communities, especially women. His journey began in a Tanzanite mining community, where he worked tirelessly to ensure that local voices were heard in the mining sector. Amani founded HakiMadini, a pioneering organization advocating for mining rights in Tanzania and beyond. His extensive experience spans over two decades, focusing on legal reforms and community mobilization. The Importance of Women’s Empowerment in Development Amani believes that investing in women is not just a moral obligation but a strategic necessity. "Investing in a woman is highly profitable; it unlocks economic productivity and reduces poverty," he explains. This perspective is especially relevant in the context of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), where women are central to achieving many targets. However, Amani points out the persistent barriers women face, including lack of access to information and exclusion from decision-making processes. Education: The Key to Empowerment Amani’s personal story emphasizes the impact of education. He recalls how his late mother inspired him to prioritize learning. "Focus on education," she would say, guiding him toward success. This emphasis on education is crucial not just for individual growth but for community development. As Amani states, "We need to prepare our girls to go beyond traditional roles and thrive in competitive environments." Breaking Down Barriers to Inclusion In discussions about women’s involvement in sectors like mining and petroleum, Amani highlights the need to address systemic issues. These industries often overlook the social and environmental impacts of their operations, especially on women and children. Amani advocates for a change in narrative, encouraging women to claim their space in these discussions. "When doors are closed, sometimes you just have to kick them open," he asserts, emphasizing the need for bold action and negotiation skills. The Role of Organizations Like Naserian Axis Amani's involvement with Naserian Axis showcases how organizations can create platforms for women’s leadership. By providing resources, networking opportunities, and information, Naserian Axis is helping to bridge the gap between women and decision-making spaces. Amani believes that such initiatives are vital for reversing information asymmetries that have historically marginalized women. Key Takeaways - Investing in Women: Empowering women leads to economic growth and social change. - Education Matters: Education is a fundamental pillar for women's empowerment and community development. - Breaking Barriers: Women must advocate for their rights and actively participate in decision-making processes. - Supportive Networks: Organizations like Naserian Axis play a crucial role in fostering women's leadership and providing necessary resources. In conclusion, Amani Mhinda’s insights remind us that the path to inclusive development is paved with the empowerment of women. By investing in education, breaking down barriers, and creating supportive communities, we can ensure that women's voices are not only heard but also lead the way in shaping a better future for all. --- INTERNAL LINK: Explore more about building community as an immigrant woman www.naserianaxis.com https://www.instagram.com/naserianaxisconsulting?igsh=aGttYmJ1Y2llbDZk&utm_source=qr ] [INTERNAL LINK: Read about our experiences in the U.S. and how to navigate cultural differences https://www.instagram.com/jamila_naserianaxis?igsh=MW9wZjRxN2pzazFjMg== https://www.instagram.com/mrs.binger?igsh=eXJsem9rOGdxa2F0&utm_source=qr] [EXTERNAL LINK SUGGESTIONS: Link to credible resources on starting a business SBA (Small Business Administration) https://www.sba.gov/business-guide/10-steps-start-your-businesshttps://www.sba.gov/business-guide/plan-your-businesshttps://www.sba.gov/business-guide/launch-your-business IRS https://www.irs.gov/businesses/small-businesses-self-employed/get-an-employer-identification-number USA.gov https://www.usa.gov/start-business SCORE https://www.score.org/find-mentorhttps://www.score.org/scores-small-business-services/Music licensed through Soundstripe. Just Start: A Real Guide to Launching a Business in the United States

Starting a business can feel overwhelming, especially for stay-at-home parents looking to make a leap into entrepreneurship. What are the key insights that can guide you on this journey? In this episode, we’ll share essential advice for aspiring business owners based on a recent discussion between Iman and Jamila, who have navigated similar paths. You’ll learn actionable strategies, mindset shifts, and the importance of self-reliance in your entrepreneurial journey. Why Learning from Others is Crucial One of the best ways to kickstart your business journey is to learn from those who have successfully built their enterprises while managing family responsibilities. Following the journeys of other women entrepreneurs can provide valuable insights and inspiration. For instance, Jamila emphasizes the importance of attending free webinars and following industry leaders, as they often share their stories and the challenges they overcame. These resources can serve as a guide and help you understand that you are not alone in your struggles. Finding Supportive Communities Joining women’s groups and forums can also be beneficial. Although some memberships may seem expensive, many organizations offer free resources that can be incredibly helpful. By participating in these communities, you can gain knowledge and insights from others who have faced similar challenges. Building a network can greatly enhance your learning and provide moral support. The Importance of Self-Reliance A common misconception is that friends and family will naturally support your entrepreneurial journey. However, Jamila points out that it’s essential to rely on yourself for motivation and validation. Many people may not understand your vision, and their lack of support can lead to disappointment. Instead, focus on your goals and the reasons you chose to pursue this path. Setting your own vision and sticking to it is crucial for success. Setting Your Own Pace Iman emphasizes that it’s vital to start somewhere, even if it’s not perfect. Perfectionism can hinder progress, so it's better to take action and learn along the way. Having a clear goal is essential; it will guide your actions and help you stay focused despite the noise around you. Remember, there will always be differing opinions, and it’s crucial to filter advice that aligns with your mission. Learning from Failure Failure is often viewed negatively, yet it can be one of the most powerful teachers in your entrepreneurial journey. Both Iman and Jamila agree that learning from setbacks is part of the process. Don’t let fear of failure hold you back; instead, view challenges as opportunities to grow and improve your business strategy. Embracing Adaptability As you embark on your entrepreneurial journey, being adaptable is key. The business landscape is constantly changing, and what works for one person may not work for you. It’s critical to assess what strategies align with your unique circumstances. For example, Iman highlights the importance of crafting a compelling pitch to attract clients. If you don’t resonate with your audience, you may struggle to achieve the results you desire. Conclusion: Just Start The most important takeaway from Iman and Jamila’s conversation is to simply start. Don’t let self-imposed limitations hold you back. You are capable of achieving your goals if you believe in yourself and take actionable steps toward your vision. Remember, every successful entrepreneur started somewhere, and the journey is filled with lessons that will only make you stronger. So, what are you waiting for? Take that first step, embrace the learning process, and keep your focus on your mission. Culture Meets Community: Bridging East African Identity in America

Welcome to our podcast, where we explore the intersection of culture and community. Today, we are honored to have Elon, a passionate advocate for East African culture, with us. In this post, we'll delve into the insights and experiences shared during our conversation about the importance of cultural representation and community support. Understanding the Inspiration Behind Culture Meets Community Elon started Culture Meets Community in March 2026, inspired by the need for solidarity within the East African community in Minnesota following the events of Operation Metro Surge. As Elon reflects on this period, she recognized that while the community faced similar challenges, there was a lack of mutual support. This realization sparked her desire to create a platform that would celebrate East African culture and foster connections among community members. The Need for Cultural Representation Elon expressed her personal journey as an amateur writer who struggled to find spaces that reflected her identity as an Ethiopian and East African American. This lack of representation in mainstream media further fueled her mission to create spaces that encapsulate the diverse identities within the East African community. By highlighting the unique aspects of East African culture, Elon aims to create an inclusive environment where individuals feel a sense of belonging and pride in their heritage. The Richness of East African Culture Why Focus on East African Art? During our conversation, Elon addressed the importance of focusing on East African art rather than African art as a whole. She emphasized that while West African culture is widely celebrated, East African traditions often remain underrepresented. The diversity within East Africa, including shared borders, food, and cultural practices, provides a rich tapestry that deserves recognition and celebration. Exploring Commonalities and Differences Elon pointed out that despite the differences among East African countries, there are significant similarities that bind the communities. From shared ethnic groups to common political challenges, understanding these connections is essential for fostering unity among East Africans. By celebrating both the commonalities and differences, Culture Meets Community aims to create a platform for dialogue, learning, and appreciation. Navigating Dual Identities One of the challenges discussed was the navigation of dual identities as East Africans in America. Elon shared her experiences as a third culture kid, balancing her Ethiopian heritage with her American upbringing. This journey is often fraught with challenges, as individuals strive to maintain their cultural integrity while adapting to a new environment. The Journey of Finding Cultural Balance Elon highlighted the importance of finding a balance between retaining one's cultural roots and embracing new experiences. She explained that many individuals face the risk of losing their cultural identity due to assimilation pressures in the United States. However, by creating spaces like Culture Meets Community, Elon hopes to encourage individuals to embrace both their East African heritage and their American experiences, fostering a sense of belonging in both cultures. Conclusion: Embracing Complexity In conclusion, our conversation with Elon underscored the significance of fostering community and celebrating cultural diversity. By addressing the complexities of East African identity in America, Culture Meets Community serves as a vital platform for dialogue and connection. As we continue to explore our cultural roots, we can create spaces that honor our histories while building bridges for future generations. Key Takeaways: - The need for community support and solidarity in the East African diaspora. - The importance of cultural representation in media and art. - Navigating dual identities as East Africans in America. - Celebrating both commonalities and differences within East African communities. What Doesn't Kill You: Motherhood, Migration, and Making a Home

In today's global landscape, the stories of immigrants are often filled with challenges, resilience, and triumph. If you are an African, American woman or anyone from a diverse background trying to navigate a new life in a different country, this podcast is for you. We, Iman Hatibu and Jamila, co-founders of Naserian Axis, share our personal journeys of leaving our homes in Africa and settling in the United States, exploring the complexities of culture, community, and motherhood through our experiences. The Journey Begins: Leaving Home The decision to leave home is never easy. Iman packed her bags and left Tanzania for Minneapolis, while Jamila made her way from Tanzania to Annapolis. Both of us moved to the U.S. for love, embarking on a new chapter filled with hope and uncertainty. Leaving behind our friends, family, and familiar surroundings was challenging, but it motivated us to create a new support system in our new homes. Understanding Community Dynamics One of the significant hurdles we faced was the need to build a community from scratch. In Tanzania, we had family and friends who were integral to our daily lives, helping us navigate the ups and downs of parenting and personal challenges. In contrast, settling in the U.S. meant grappling with loneliness and the struggle to find connections. We learned that community support is crucial, especially for mothers, as it eases the transition and fosters a sense of belonging. The Culture Shock Moving to a new continent can be a culture shock. Both Iman and Jamila experienced the stark differences in lifestyle and social norms. From the way people interact to the pace of life, everything felt new and sometimes overwhelming. For Jamila, the transition from European countries to the U.S. was particularly jarring. The realization that everything in the U.S. requires driving, unlike the walkable cities she was used to, added to her adjustment struggles. Embracing New Roles As mothers in a new country, we found that our roles expanded beyond just parenting. The challenges of motherhood in a foreign land pushed us to become stronger and more determined. The phrase "What doesn't kill you makes you stronger" resonated deeply with us, as we faced various obstacles that ultimately shaped our identities. Instead of succumbing to the pressures of adapting, we embraced them as opportunities for growth. Building Naserian Axis: A Shared Vision Our individual journeys converged when we realized our shared experiences and aspirations. We decided to create Naserian Axis to empower other immigrants, particularly women, who are navigating similar paths. Our organization focuses on providing resources, support, and a platform for voices that often go unheard. Through this venture, we aim to foster community and collaboration among diverse groups. Key Takeaways for Immigrants - Embrace Your Story: Your journey is unique and valuable. Share your experiences to connect with others. - Build Your Community: Seek out local organizations and groups that resonate with your values and experiences. - Adapt and Overcome: Embrace the challenges as opportunities to grow and learn. - Support Each Other: Collaborate with fellow immigrants to create a network of support. In conclusion, our experiences as immigrant mothers in the U.S. have taught us the importance of resilience, community, and the power of shared stories. We invite you to join us on this journey, as we continue to learn, grow, and support one another through Naserian Access. Together, we can build a brighter future for ourselves and our families. --- [INTERNAL LINK: Explore more about building community as an immigrant woman www.naserianaxis.com https://www.instagram.com/naserianaxisconsulting?igsh=aGttYmJ1Y2llbDZk&utm_source=qr ] [INTERNAL LINK: Read about our experiences in the U.S. and how to navigate cultural differences https://www.instagram.com/jamila_naserianaxis?igsh=MW9wZjRxN2pzazFjMg== https://www.instagram.com/mrs.binger?igsh=eXJsem9rOGdxa2F0&utm_source=qr] [EXTERNAL LINK SUGGESTIONS: Link to credible resources on immigrant support services https://www.upwardlyglobal.org/ https://careerforce.mn.gov/] Music licensed through Soundstripe.
