Is the NBA Dream Breaking Young Athletes?
🏀 How hard should a young athlete push before hard work starts doing more harm than good?On NathanButNet Episode 98, Nathan sits down with Tauna Young, FNP-C, a psychiatric nurse practitioner and founder of Neurovana, to talk about youth basketball, athlete mental health, anxiety, burnout, grind culture and the pressure that comes with chasing the dream of playing at the highest level. We discuss the mental and physical cost of year-round youth sports, early specialization, when athletes should push through discomfort versus rest, how parents and coaches shape a young athlete’s relationship with failure, and what happens when basketball becomes someone’s entire identity.🧠 We also get into:• The line between dedication and obsession • Whether hard work itself can become unhealthy • Performance anxiety and nervous system regulation • The sacrifices required to become great • When athletes should keep pushing — and when they should stop • How failure can actually build confidence • The pressure surrounding the dream of going pro ⚡ Later in the episode, Tauna discusses her work with Neurovana and cranial electrotherapy stimulation (CES), including its use in her work surrounding anxiety and athletic performance.🔗 LEARN MORE ABOUT TAUNA & NEUROVANA:https://NeurovanaCalm.com🏀 WATCH MY VIDEO ON THE PHYSICAL TOLL OF MODERN YOUTH BASKETBALL:https://youtu.be/vg2n8NzRWng👕 NATHANBUTNET MERCH:https://nathanbut.net🎮 SPIRITS OF JINMENJU ON STEAM:https://store.steampowered.com/app/4136690/Spirits_of_Jinmenju/🔔 Subscribe for more basketball documentaries, podcasts and player stories.⏱️ CHAPTERS:0:00 In Today’s Episode0:28 Tauna Young & Athlete Mental Health1:43 Tauna’s Background & Neurovana3:11 The Explosion of Youth Sports5:14 Chasing the NBA Dream vs Accepting Reality9:28 Anxiety, Burnout & the Pressure to Keep Working15:03 Why Rest Is Part of Training17:52 Youth Basketball, Overtraining & Early Specialization20:58 When Should Athletes Push Through Discomfort?25:41 What Parents & Coaches Should Praise30:17 Participation Trophies, Failure & Resilience31:51 Parents Should Read Their Kid’s Story, Not Write It33:44 Whiplash, Obsession & the Cost of Greatness42:06 Why Being Allowed to Fail Builds Confidence46:15 “Anything Worth Doing Is Worth Doing Poorly”50:08 What Chasing a Pro Dream Can Still Teach You52:42 When Sports Become Your Entire Identity1:02:28 Control What You Can Control1:04:52 What Are You Willing to Sacrifice for Success?1:08:05 Neurovana & Cranial Electrotherapy Stimulation1:12:44 CES, Anxiety & Athletic Performance1:19:42 Mental Burnout & Warning Signs1:24:27 Can Hard Work Become an Addiction?1:26:10 When Should You Push Through Pain?1:30:03 Anxiety, Fear & Emotional Avoidance1:32:56 Learning to Experience Discomfort1:34:48 Your Fears & Passions Live in the Same Place1:35:58 Final Thoughts1:36:44 Tauna’s Closing Message & Neurovana⚠️ This episode is for informational and educational purposes and is not a substitute for individualized medical or mental-health advice.#Basketball #YouthSports #MentalHealth
