[…] In those days, students used boards of slate like an early chalkboard and needed to wipe it clear with water. So every student had little containers of water in their desks, but Walter's was special. It had a little stopper that let him squirt a few controlled drops and he loved it. But at 1030 that morning, the two-story schoolhouse Walter was in seemed to erupt. Wind slammed into the windows, rattling them so violently as the sun seemed to disappear, and cold air rushed in at every gap. As the storm raged on, the teachers had a difficult choice. They could stay in their schoolhouse, which offered some shelter, but they didn't have enough food or fuel for the other hand, the storm had grown so fierce that they feared their youngest students could not survive a trip to the nearest house if they elected to leave.
