In this episode of Naturopathic Futures, we sit down with naturopath, researcher, educator and integrative oncology practitioner Manuela Boyle to explore more than three decades of naturopathic practice and what the profession needs as it continues to evolve. Manuela shares the journey that has taken her from naturopathic medicine and academia into research, integrative oncology, education and mentoring. We explore how her work with cancer patients has shaped her approach to care, and why she believes clinical knowledge is only one part of being an effective practitioner. Together, we unpack the importance of human connection in healthcare, the difference between information and knowledge, and why the fundamental principles of naturopathic medicine remain relevant alongside research, evidence and modern healthcare. In this episode, we discuss: • How Manuela’s career evolved from general naturopathic practice into integrative oncology, research and education • Why practitioner-patient connection and truly seeing the person behind the diagnosis matter • The role of evidence, research and academic rigour in the future of naturopathic medicine • Working collaboratively with medical specialists and creating shared-care models for complex patients • Why the future of naturopathy lies in retaining its fundamental principles while continuing to develop as a profession This conversation offers a thoughtful look at how naturopathic medicine has evolved, where it may be heading next, and the role practitioners can play in keeping individualised, human-centred care at the heart of the profession. EP 12: Cassandra Parrish - Why Weight Loss Isn’t Just About Food
In this episode of Naturopathic Futures, we sit down with nutritionist Cassandra Parrish to explore a part of weight loss that often gets overlooked: what’s happening beneath our relationship with food. With more than 20 years of experience in nutrition, Cass has seen first-hand that knowing what to eat isn’t always the problem. People can lose weight, follow the plan and understand nutrition, yet still find themselves caught in the same cycle. Her work has evolved to bring together nutrition, counselling, coaching and parts therapy to explore the emotional and psychological patterns that can influence food, body image and sustainable change. Together, we explore what happens when weight loss moves beyond calories, meal plans and willpower, and starts looking at our relationship with food, perfectionism, comfort, identity and the stories we carry about our bodies. In this episode, we discuss: • Why knowing what to eat isn’t always enough to create lasting change • The diet cycle, perfectionism and the all-or-nothing thinking that can keep people stuck • How food can become connected with comfort, love, celebration and emotional regulation • Using parts therapy to understand the different internal patterns influencing food and body image • Moving towards an approach to health and weight loss that includes nutrition alongside mental and emotional wellbeing This conversation offers a different perspective on weight loss for practitioners and anyone who has ever wondered why having all the nutritional knowledge still doesn’t necessarily make changing our relationship with food easy. About Cassandra Parrish Cass is a nutritionist with more than 20 years of experience working with women and weight loss. After completing a Bachelor of Applied Science in Food and Nutrition, her work expanded into counselling, coaching and therapeutic approaches including resource therapy. Today, she combines her extensive nutrition experience with deeper mindset and therapeutic work to help women better understand their relationship with food, their bodies and the patterns that may be influencing their health goals.
