Nebenstimmen" brings you in conversations on music, art and life between Ensemble members and conversation partners chosen by them. Find out what the musicians are working on at the moment, and what their personal thoughts are. In this episode, double bassist and Ensemble Modern member Paul Cannon speaks with composer Hannah Kendall. The collaboration between her and the ensemble began in 2020 with the project „Afromodernism in contemporary music“. In 2022 Ensemble Modern premiered Kendall’s work „shouting forever into the receiver“ at the Donaueschinger Musiktage. The ensemble also performed „Even sweetness can scratch the throat“ (2023) in May 2026 at the Happy New Ears concert. Both works explore colonialism, the transatlantic slave trade and practices of remembrance. Together, they talk about these two pieces, why auxiliary instruments such as dreadlock cuffs and music boxes can shape the direction of a work, and why listening without expectation matters so deeply. In „Nebenstimmen“ hören Sie Gespräche von Ensemble-Mitgliedern mit von ihnen selbst ausgewählten Gesprächspartnerinnen und -partnern zu Musik, Kunst und Leben. In dieser Folge spricht der Klangregisseur des Ensemble Modern, Norbert Ommer, mit dem Dokumentarfilmer Thorsten Schütte über seinen Film „Ensemble Modern – Why we play“, der ab Juni 2026 in die Kinos kommt. Gemeinsam gehen sie der Frage nach, warum „Why we play“ ein ungewöhnlicher Musikfilm ist – einer, der nicht das fertige Ergebnis in den Mittelpunkt stellt, sondern die fragilen, prozesshaften Momente des gemeinsamen Arbeitens. Thorsten Schütte beschreibt die Herausforderung, Musik filmisch erfahrbar zu machen, Prozesse abzubilden und jedem Ensemblemitglied eine Stimme zu geben. Ausgangspunkt seiner Arbeit ist dabei ein prägendes Erlebnis: ein Konzert des Ensemble Modern und Frank Zappa im Jahr 1992, das ihm den entscheidenden Impuls gab, Dokumentarfilme zu machen. Zudem tauschen sich beide über Ausbildungswege für junge Film- und Klangregisseur*innen aus und reflektieren ihre eigenen künstlerischen Erfahrungen. In "Nebenstimmen" hören Sie Gespräche von Ensemble-Mitgliedern mit von ihnen selbst ausgewählten Gesprächspartnerinnen und -partnern zu Musik, Kunst und Leben. In der aktuellen Folge trifft der Künstlerische Manager und Geschäftsführer des Ensemble Modern Christian Fausch auf den Tenor Julian Prégardien. Es geht um künstlerische Prägung, um die Verantwortung von Kunst in der Gesellschaft und darum, warum das Lied eine Art Lebenselixier oder sogar Heimat für Julian Prégardien ist. Erfahren Sie außerdem, was es mit den Projekten „Liedstadt“ und „Clara!“ auf sich hat. Darüber hinaus sprechen die beiden natürlich über die Zusammenarbeit zwischen Ensemble Modern und Julian Prégardien, die 2021 mit Hans Zenders „Schubert’s Winterreise“ begann – und wie aus der Beschäftigung mit diesem Werk die Idee zum neuen Liederzyklus „Theres“ entstand.
