[…] And as the older adult population grows, this number is just going to keep going up and up. And over 90% of those deaths are actually suicides. So at the same time, it's estimated that approximately 40%, and it may be higher, of older adults live in homes with a firearm, whether it's they're the one who owns the firearm or they live in a home with someone else who owns a firearm. So older adults have access to these firearms and also are experiencing a significant amount of harm from firearms. Now, what is perhaps not fully appreciated is that even if someone was a very safe firearm user earlier in their life, there's a lot of changes, both normal and common aging-related changes that occur as people get older, that may impact the safety of handling and using a firearm.
